Rather than showcasing tunes by her hero Bob Marley, O'Connor opts to cover songs by his renowned peers Lee "Scratch" Perry and Peter Tosh, as well as a handful of tracks by Burning Spear, going for an authentic Jamaican vibe by recording in the island's iconic Tuff Gong studios. Sly & Robbie's backing is as proficient and propulsive as ever, creating a thoroughly organic atmosphere that O'Connor revels in, particularly on Burning Spear's fierce "Marcus Garvey" and Perry's sauntering "Vampire." Though it had potential as a misstep, THROW DOWN YOUR ARMS comes off without a hitch, highlighting the talents of all artists involved.
Although it's tough to say whether this or Willie Nelson's COUNTRYMAN was 2005's most unexpected reggae album, THROW DOWN YOUR ARMS proved to be a remarkably simpatico collaboration between vocalist Sinead O'Connor and legendary producers/sidemen Sly & Robbie. Given her notoriously outspoken persona and hatred of injustice, it's oddly fitting that O'Connor applies her distinctive Irish lilt to a strong set of socially conscious roots-reggae classics.
Personnel: Sinéad O'Connor (vocals, whistle); Dalton Browne, Mikey Chung (guitar); Glen Brownie (acoustic guitar); Dean Fraser (saxophone); David Madden (trumpet); Carroll "Bowie" McLaughlin (piano); Robert Lyn, Steven "Lenky" Marsden (keyboards); Robbie Shakespeare (bass guitar); Sly Dunbar (drums); Uziah "Sticky" Thompson (percussion); Katrina Harley, Pam Hall (background vocals).
Rolling Stone (No. 986, p.94) - 3 out of 5 stars - "...[E]asy melodies and uncluttered arrangements make them fine showcases for one of the most gorgeous and flexible voices in pop...." Entertainment Weekly (No. 843, p.77) - "...[H]er icy-cool vocals nicely contrast with the island grooves." - Grade: B Throw Down Your Arms Music Sinead O'Connor Throw Down Your Arms Songs | 1. | Jah Nuh Dead |

| Throw Down Your Arms Music Throw Down Your Arms Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Irish reggae! I should first say I love Sinead, and that I love this album. I also realize that it's a bit of a head twister to hear an Irish woman sing Reggae songs, and she certainly isn't one to affect a fake Jamaican accent. She puts her heart into every song, as usual, and the packaging and liner notes indicate that this was a more personal effort than many of her albums. It's a fun listen, with clean, well-rounded acoustic sound. But obviously not your average Reggae disk. Recommended for all Sinead fans, and definitely not as an introduction to Reggae music. What a beautiful singer! What a beautiful singer is Sinead...whatever she does, rock, pop, dance and ultimately raggae, she's intense and believable. The songs are real classics and easy, the production (the great duo Sly and Robbie)is first rate, I love it! Submitted by squid103 (Foligno (PG) Italia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Awesome Sinead I, too, cannot stop listening to SOC's Throw Down Your Arms CD. Heard Downpressor Man online on WFUV. Floored. Bought it.
I have her first two CDs: "The Lion and the Cobra" and "I do not want what I haven't got." Get them. You will be amazed. Submitted by tallygal007 (Tallahassee, FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
LOVE this album!!! I've NEVER owned a CD by Sinead O'Connor, but I heard "Lay Down Your Arms" on an internet radio station, and HAD to check out the disc, as much of a reggae fan as I am. I LOVE IT!!! I can NOT stop listening to it! Ironically, and what makes it so cool, is that I know all the words to the songs! (I've seen Burning Spear twice, and know his (Winston Rodney's) songs no matter who sings them!). This is the FIRST disc I've ever owned that does cover songs that I actually like...or love! I usually never like hearing other artists butcher someone else's songs, but Sinead ENHANCES them! She has a BEAUTIFUL voice!!!! I've got to admit, I've never been a fan of hers, but if is the way she sings, I'm suddenly an instant fan! I tell all my friends about this CD, and I will keep listening to it over and over, night after night. This is one of my favorite Reggae CD's I've owned in many years! I hate to admit it, but I actually like it a bit more than my former favorite artist, MIDNITE. Yep, Sinead O'Connor has instantly gained a new fan! Even if you are not a Sinead O'Connor fan, if you like reggae, you will LOVE this CD!!! Submitted by hairball98498 (Tacoma, WA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Though it's ultimately a less balladic, more stylistically varied album than its dreamy predecessor ESSENCE, WORLD WITHOUT TEARS starts out with a slow-burning, reverb-drenched ballad, but then takes a sharp turn into sensual lyricism, pounding ...

| | Where Is My Mind?: A Tribute To The Pixies CD (1999)
Throw Down Your Arms songs
$8.35 A curiously restrained tribute to such a typically ebullient gang, this adoring gumbo of many of the band's worst songs misses the point of the Pixies' oeuvre. Eve 6, Superdrag, Nada Surf and others emphasize their own bands' one-trick riffs as interpretations of the Pixies' far less self-conscious forays into pop, punk, and protogrunge. Local H's version of "Tame" may be the most musically inspired, and Weezer's "Velouria" demonstrates originality and doesn't endeavor to out-Pixie the Pixies. Unlike Deadicated, the model-tribute to the musically controversial Grateful Dead -- really, some of those songs sound terrible -- Where Is My mind? doesn't get that covering songs means revisiting songs for the sake of the songs, and avoiding a group "knockoff" is in itself a compliment to that group. It means the songs, as songs, transcend. Virtually nobody on this record takes the project further than a an "Ooh, I know that one!" after-hours jam session, and even the silly Pixies deserve more than that. ~ Becky Byrkit
Where Is My Mind? features emocore, punk-pop, and ska-punk bands paying tribute to one of the best bands of the late '80s and early '90s, the Pixies. Good intentions aside, for the most part the album doesn't do justice to either the Pixies or their supposed disciples. While the Pixies managed to be folky, poppy, surfy, and deranged -- often within the course of one song -- bands like Eve 6 and Local H just don't have that kind of musical scope within their grasp, so songs like "Allison," "Velouria," and "Tame" get flattened and stripped of the sonic twists and turns that made them great in the first place. Eve 6's "Allison" reworks the manic tribute to Mose Allison into ...
