The soundtrack to SUMMER HOLIDAY features music by Cliff Richard & The Shadows, The Michael Samees Singers, The Norrie Paramor Strings and Grazina Frame. Originally released in summer 1963, Summer Holiday was the most successful movie and soundtrack that Cliff Richard ever put his name to, an almost absurdly feel-good flick accompanied by some of the best (and best-loved) songs in his entire catalog. Even today, no Richard hits compilation would be complete without the title track, "Bachelor Boy," "The Next Time," and "Dancing Shoes," while songs that were essentially regarded as soundtrack filler have likewise taken on a life of their own. The first serious attempt to mine the Summer Holiday archive arrived in 1996, when EMI's Cliff Richard at the Movies compilation included the radically altered movie versions of "Bachelor Boy" and "Summer Holiday" among its bonus tracks. Both reappear here, alongside fellow cinema-only takes of "The Next Time," "Big News," and the Shadows' solo "Big News"; also featured are rehearsal takes of "The Next Time" and "Bachelor Boy," plus both sides of an advertising EP distributed to movie theaters on the eve of the film's release. It's a solid gathering, with the movie versions at least the equal of the LP and single cuts. Of course it is difficult, after all these years, to fully reappraise Summer Holiday in the light of these new excavations -- the original album itself remains such a classic that any deviation from the familiar arrangements seems somehow wrong. But still, the 40th anniversary of one of British cinema's greatest successes needed celebrating and, in the absence of a fully remastered and bonus-packed DVD reissue, this set fulfilled that need very well. ~ Dave Thompson The best of Cliff Richard's movie soundtrack albums, Summer Holiday is dominated by its all-conquering title track, but by no means is it cowed by it. Of Richard's own performances, the anthemic "Bachelor Boy," the blistering "Dancing Shoes," and the impossibly stately "The Next Time" have all been accorded classic status, commercially and musically, while a trio of Shadows instrumentals -- "Les Girls," "Round and Round," and "Foot Tapper" -- are all the equal of the band's regular fare. Indeed, the latter title not only topped the U.K. singles chart, it displaced "Summer Holiday" itself in the process. History remembers the first half of 1963 as the frenetic dawn of Beatlemania. In fact, of the six singles which reached number one between January and mid-April, only one (by Australian balladeer Frank Ifield) had no connection with Richard and company -- two hits each by Clif Richard and the Shadows were joined at the top by "Diamonds," performed by former Shads Jet Harris and Tony Meehan. Summer Holiday's secret -- one which the Beatles would themselves tap for their celluloid adventures -- lay in not disturbing an already successful formula. Seven of the soundtrack's 16 tracks featured songwriting input from either Richard or the band, including both the title track and "Bachelor Boy," while "The Next Time" had already been scheduled as his next 45 before it was added to the movie. Two more tracks, "Orlando's Mime" and "Yugoslav Wedding," are instrumental passages performed by the Associated British Studio Orchestra, which leaves just six songs, composed by screenplay writers Peter Myers and Ronald Cass, to jolly along the plot itself. It is to the authors' credit that, even at their most script-driven, all six still raise a smile -- the effervescent "Seven Days to a Holiday" and the rhyming motor mechanics of "Let Us Take You for a Ride" are genuine highlights, while the return of The Young Ones soundtrack co-star Grazina Frame brings a touch of added glamor to "A Swingin' Affair." Undeniably the best of Summer Holiday can be gleaned from any half-decent Richard/Shadows hits collection, and there are a few moments when the soundtrack certainly misses its intended visuals -- "Really Waltzing," with its int Cliff Richard Summer Holiday Songs | 1. | Summer Holiday | |

While Wilco's debut, A.M., spread its wings in an expectedly country-rock fashion, their sophomore effort, Being There, is the group's great leap forward, a masterful, wildly eclectic collection shot through with ambitions and ideas. Although a few songs remain rooted in their signature sound, here Jeff Tweedy and band are as fascinated by their music's possibilities as its origins, and they push the songs which make up this sprawling two-disc set down consistently surprising paths and byways. For starters, the opening "Misunderstood" is majestic psychedelia, built on studio trickery and string flourishes, while "I Got You (At the End of the Century)" is virtual power pop, right down to the handclaps. The lovely "Someone Else's Song" borrows heavily from the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood," while the R&B-influenced boogie of "Monday" wouldn't sound at all out of place on Exile on Main Street; and on and on. The remarkable thing is how fresh all of these seeming clichés sound when reimagined with so much love and conviction; even the most traditional songs take unexpected twists and turns, never once sinking into mere imitation. "Music is my savior/I was named by rock & roll/I was maimed by rock & roll/I was tamed by rock & roll/I got my name from rock & roll," Tweedy sings on "Sunken Treasure," the opener of the second disc, and throughout the course of these 19 songs he explores rock as though he were tracing ...
