While many of her contemporaries (including Trisha Yearwood and Patty Loveless) imbued their 2005 releases with a traditional bent, Martina McBride went one step further and recorded TIMELESS, an entire album of country classics, many of which date back to the 1950s and '60s. McBride's commitment to these songs is evident both on the disc's extensive liner notes (which present many facts about the tunes, such as who originally performed each one), as well as in her soulful, stirring performances. While every track here benefits from her nuanced delivery, McBride shines the brightest on a buoyant version of Ray Price's "I'll Be There" (with additional singing by Dan Tyminski and Rhonda Vincent), a swooning take on Don Gibson's "I Can't Stop Loving You," and a delicate rendition of Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone" (with harmony vocals by Dolly Parton). For those seeking vintage songs channeled through one of the finest interpretive voices in 21st-century country, TIMELESS is ideal.

Need at least another two Until this album Martina was just a name - another strong singer of life's hurt and hassle - and there are many. This is a whole new scene, though and the heading says it all. This is just fabulous and has been played many, many times. I'm in the age group whereby I can lay claim to enjoying all the originals but these are so sensitively handled by M. and her band. Wonderful stuff. Please! Classic This selection purchased as a gift for my wife who is a huge Martina fan. Listened to the entire disc on a road trip this afternoon. Really enjoyed the line up of classic country songs. Martina is gifted with an incredible instrument and she shows that instrument off on many of these all-time favorites. Just OK This is a pleasant enough CD but it has absolutely no creativity. These songs were much better by the original artists - why bother to record them if you don't change something about them or make them better? Martina does neither - she just sings them straight up like the originals. While technically she is a great voice, I don't feel any real emotion coming from her readings.
