| | Tango Crash CD Tango Crash Discography of CDs
To call the music on Tango Crash unpredictable is a major understatement. From post-bop jazz (with fine solos from soprano saxophonist Rodrigo Dominiguez) and sound explorations to touches of tangos (featuring the bandoneon of Pono Topia), haunting and somewhat spooky vocals, world fusion, and completely uncategorizable electronic music, this program will certainly keep listeners guessing. Some of the tracks (particularly "DJ Peron") are bizarre throwaways, while others feature romantic melodies and impressive musicianship. This is definitely a mixed bag, a really eccentric program. ~ Scott Yanow

Tango Crash
$14.09 Detroit comprises a six-composition suite commissioned for the 2009 thirtieth anniversary Detroit International Jazz Festival, played in the studio with musicians from composer/arranger Gerald Wilson's Los Angeles home or New York City area. Curiously, there are no Motor City-based players on the disc, but the themes are based in certain locales from the industrial Midwestern City that has fallen on hard economic times but played a pivotal role in the development of Wilson's highly developed skills as a composer, arranger, and bandleader. A quite spirited and energetic music is heard here from the 90-year-old Wilson, whose charm and wit would rival anyone many decades his junior. It's a swinging affair molded in the traditional big-band visage of Count Basie, Ernie Wilkins, or early Quincy Jones, with Wilson's deft touch for embellishing the blues. Players like trumpeter Sean Jones, son/guitarist Anthony Wilson, violinist Yvette Devereaux, the fine pianist Brian O'Rourke, and particularly L.A. alto saxophonist and flutist Randall Willis or Kamasi Washington on tenor sax, spice up the ...
| | Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD (1959) Bonus Track; Remastered
Tango Crash
$6.29 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. ...

| | Brian Bromberg It Is What It Is CD (2009)
Tango Crash
$14.29 Brian Bromberg's fourth recording for the Artistry label, and first since they were acquired by the Mack Avenue label, is a fairly predictable program of contemporary jazz, commercial funk, and pop song covers, as well as uptown New York City R&B-type dance tunes that should appeal to the urban crowd. His prominent electric bass guitar always has a retro feel going back to Ralphe Armstrong, Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke, Larry Graham, and James Jamerson, but retains a current-day feel that is still relevant, remaining skilled and precise as any bassist currently playing the amplified instrument. Many of these tracks include a horn section featuring Randy Brecker, Eric Marienthal, Gerald Albright, and Rick Braun, while keyboardists George Duke, Patrice Rushen, and Jeff Lorber join in here and there. While entertaining and even attractive from a melodic standpoint, Bromberg and his mates are reworking themes, beats, and songs without pushing the envelope, and make sure that the music is concise and constrained, and never boils over. The hippest selection is the opener/title track, very much in the Saturday Night Live neo-bop N.Y.C. funk and bop amalgam, with the ...
| | Marc Copland Night Whispers New York Trio Recordings: Volume 3 CD (2009) (Import) Germany
Tango Crash
$16.39 From Erroll Garner to Cecil Taylor to Bill Evans, and from Chick Corea to Thelonious Monk, a wide variety of acoustic jazz pianists have thrived in the time-honored piano trio setting (piano, bass, and drums) over the years. It's a setting that has never gone out of style in jazz, and it's a setting that has served acoustic pianist Marc Copland well in his New York Trio Recordings series. The lineup has varied from one volume to the next; on New York Trio Recordings, Vol. 3: Night Whispers, Copland is joined by bassist Drew Gress and drummer Bill Stewart (whereas he was joined by bassist Gary Peacock and Stewart on Vol. 1 and by Peacock and drummer Paul Motian on Vol. 2). The constant in the series, of course, has been Copland, who is in good form throughout this 2008 recording and enjoys a nice rapport with Gress and Stewart. Copland obviously enjoys the role of acoustic trio pianist, and his enthusiasm is evident on three Copland originals ("Scattered Leaves," "The Bell Tolls," and the title track) as well as on impressionistic performances of the standards "Emily" (no less than three ...

| | Altan Blue Idol CD (2002)
Tango Crash
$11.99 Altan continue to go from strength to strength. While it seemed for a little while that the 1994 death of founder Frankie Kennedy would tear the band apart, they've ended up a strong, cohesive unit instead, one which continues to push at the boundaries of Irish music, albeit in small ways. But when you're this good -- and they deserve the tag as the best Irish band today, and certainly the most accomplished -- you don't need to make giant strides. They set out their stall with an assured version of "Daily Growing" (better known as "The Trees They Do Grow High") where Maighread Ní Mhaonaigh's duet with Paul Brady recasts the song -- it retains its folk roots, but becomes a living dialogue. "The Pretty Young Girl" brings ...
