(1 Customer Review)
First released in 1968, STRICTLY GUITAR was Merle Travis's final instrumental album for Capitol. It features the country guitarist and songwriter displaying his casual mastery of the fretboard on a variety of standards, including some popular songs of the 1920s and '30s, like "Lazy River," "I'll See You in My Dreams," and "Cuddle Up a Little Closer," as well as a couple of original compositions, "Dance of the Goldenrod" and "Cannon Ball Rag." There's also a humorous nod to the sonic wizardry of Les Paul in the accelerated soloing of "Fishers Horn Pipe." Travis's guitar style, which influenced both Doc Watson and Chet Atkins, is a melodic blend of country and folk fingerpicking with a jazz sheen, both technically brilliant and immensely appealing.Dirty Linen (p.89) - "Merle Travis originated a particular style of finger-picking known as the 'Travis Style,' a syncopated rhythm of the thumb and index finger, which soon became popular with country and rockabilly musicians in the 1950s." Mojo (Publisher) (p.118) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Travis was once the most influential guitar player in Nashville." Merle Travis Strictly Guitar Songs | 1. | Heart of My Heart |

| | Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison CD (1968)
Strictly Guitar
$6.85 This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only in Super Audio CD players.
Recorded live at Folsom Prison, Folsom, California on January 13, 1968. Includes liner notes by Johnny Cash and Steve Earle.
Want to hear part of the reason why Johnny Cash is an icon, a singer respected and influential in country, folk, and rock & roll? THIS is it! In 1968--one of the most tumultuous years in American history since the Depression years--Cash recorded an album live in front of a (literally) captive (but wildly appreciative) audience, in Folsom Prison. With two guitars, bass, drums, and a small vocal group (including Cash's wife June Carter Cash and the Statler Brothers), Cash sings his hits and lesser-known songs ("Send a Picture of Mother") and some haunting country standards ("Dark as a Dungeon"), as well as songs about REAL outlaws ("Cocaine Blues") to a rapt audience that hangs on every word. That boom-chicka-boom sound is sharp as the first mean wind ...

| | Long Ryders Native Sons CD (1993)
Strictly Guitar
$9.05 The Long Ryders' 1984 full-length debut is one of the defining albums of the mid-'80s roots-rock scene, a loose amalgamation of bands reacting against the MTV-ready crop of synth-pop superstars by playing guitar-heavy country-influenced rock and roll. Heavily influenced by Gram Parsons and the Buffalo Springfield, singer/songwriter Sid Griffin and crew mix the '60s revivalism of the then-current Paisley Underground scene with a fondness for mandolins and other bluegrass instruments which would be further explored by the alt-country groups of the '90s. Unfortunately, the Long Ryders, who had made much of their "authenticity" in early interviews, blew their street cred in 1985 by starring in a beer commercial, to widespread derision. NATIVE SONS ...
| | Darryl Worley I Miss My Friend CD (2002)
Strictly Guitar
$7.29 Country hunk Darryl Worley's sophomore album is a tour de force of country hooks, steel guitars, and old-timey fiddles--and incidentally some pretty fine songwriting, as evidenced by songs such as "I Wouldn't Mind the Shackles" and the title track, both of which deal with the traditional country dilemmas of love and loss, and how to get a hit record out of them. There's a refreshing lack of gloss in I MISS MY FRIEND, recalling Dwight Yoakam's early releases, with some hot picking courtesy of Nashville's finest, a great road song in "Calling Caroline," and some folksy, homespun philosophy with "Family Tree" and "Back Where I Belong." Worley's a traditionalist in the best sense--Hank Williams would recognize the subject matter of "The Least That You Can Do"--and his songwriting is honest, ...

| | David Banner Greatest Story Ever Told (explicit) CD (2008)
Strictly Guitar
$11.45 Album number five finds David Banner embracing a dichotomy. The virtuosic producer/MC kicks things off on "So Long" with a call to action as he characterizes his generation as "cowards" for the persistence of black-on-black crime and a dearth of violent resistance against the police. In the process, Banner takes verbal shots at George W. Bush, ...
