First released in 1968, STRICTLY GUITAR was Merle Travis's final instrumental album for Capitol. It features the country guitarist and songwriter displaying his casual mastery of the fretboard on a variety of standards, including some popular songs of the 1920s and '30s, like "Lazy River," "I'll See You in My Dreams," and "Cuddle Up a Little Closer," as well as a couple of original compositions, "Dance of the Goldenrod" and "Cannon Ball Rag." There's also a humorous nod to the sonic wizardry of Les Paul in the accelerated soloing of "Fishers Horn Pipe." Travis's guitar style, which influenced both Doc Watson and Chet Atkins, is a melodic blend of country and folk fingerpicking with a jazz sheen, both technically brilliant and immensely appealing.Dirty Linen (p.89) - "Merle Travis originated a particular style of finger-picking known as the 'Travis Style,' a syncopated rhythm of the thumb and index finger, which soon became popular with country and rockabilly musicians in the 1950s." Mojo (Publisher) (p.118) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Travis was once the most influential guitar player in Nashville."
