(1 Customer Review)
First released in 1968, STRICTLY GUITAR was Merle Travis's final instrumental album for Capitol. It features the country guitarist and songwriter displaying his casual mastery of the fretboard on a variety of standards, including some popular songs of the 1920s and '30s, like "Lazy River," "I'll See You in My Dreams," and "Cuddle Up a Little Closer," as well as a couple of original compositions, "Dance of the Goldenrod" and "Cannon Ball Rag." There's also a humorous nod to the sonic wizardry of Les Paul in the accelerated soloing of "Fishers Horn Pipe." Travis's guitar style, which influenced both Doc Watson and Chet Atkins, is a melodic blend of country and folk fingerpicking with a jazz sheen, both technically brilliant and immensely appealing.Dirty Linen (p.89) - "Merle Travis originated a particular style of finger-picking known as the 'Travis Style,' a syncopated rhythm of the thumb and index finger, which soon became popular with country and rockabilly musicians in the 1950s." Mojo (Publisher) (p.118) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Travis was once the most influential guitar player in Nashville." Merle Travis Strictly Guitar Songs | 1. | Heart of My Heart |

Strictly Guitar album
$25.69 There are just no two ways about it: if you call yourself a fan of '70s music, you simply must have Linda Ronstadt's HEART LIKE A WHEEL. Like Fleetwood Mac's RUMOURS and The Eagles HOTEL CALIFORNIA, this is a masterpiece that has earned a spot in every record collection that's worth its salt. Ronstadt, the '70s queen of southern California country-rock, is in pristine form. Her angelic voice is flawless as each track flows from one to the other like a gentle stream.
Not only do you get the hit "You're No Good" and the Everly Brothers' classic "When Will I Be Loved," but the sorrowful title track and Hank Williams' "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still In Love With You)" give testament to Ronstadt's legendary feel for driving the emotion home. What's more, if the powerful ...

| | John Denver Rocky Mountain High CD (1972)
Strictly Guitar CD music
$6.75 ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH heightened John Denver's profile as one of the key folk singers of the 1970s. The record became the artist's first to hit the Top 10 on the strength of its expansive, memorable title track and an overall sound distinguished by a more fully fleshed band, including backing vocals, fiddle, and lap steel. As opposed to ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH's predecessor POEM, PRAYERS AND PROMISES, there is some percussion ...
| | Long Ryders Native Sons CD (1984)
Strictly Guitar music CDs
$9.05 The Long Ryders' 1984 full-length debut is one of the defining albums of the mid-'80s roots-rock scene, a loose amalgamation of bands reacting against the MTV-ready crop of synth-pop superstars by playing guitar-heavy country-influenced rock and roll. Heavily influenced by Gram Parsons and the Buffalo Springfield, singer/songwriter Sid Griffin and crew mix the '60s revivalism of the then-current Paisley Underground scene with a fondness for mandolins and other bluegrass instruments which would be further explored by the alt-country groups of the '90s. Unfortunately, the Long Ryders, ...
| | Darryl Worley I Miss My Friend CD (2002)
Strictly Guitar songs
$7.29 Country hunk Darryl Worley's sophomore album is a tour de force of country hooks, steel guitars, and old-timey fiddles--and incidentally some pretty fine songwriting, as evidenced by songs such as "I Wouldn't Mind the Shackles" and the title track, both of which deal with the traditional country dilemmas of love and loss, and how to get a hit record out of them. There's a refreshing lack of gloss in I MISS MY FRIEND, recalling Dwight Yoakam's early releases, with some hot picking courtesy of Nashville's finest, a great road song in "Calling Caroline," and some folksy, homespun philosophy with "Family Tree" and "Back Where I Belong." Worley's a traditionalist in the best sense--Hank Williams would recognize the subject matter of "The Least That You Can Do"--and his songwriting is honest, catchy, and sentimental in the grand Nashville tradition. With more than a hint of iron in its soul, I MISS MY FRIEND is a refreshing antidote to the big-budget bluster of some recent country releases.
