Guitar Spectacular was legendary pedal steel player Speedy West's last official "solo" album. Augmented by an extraordinary group of session players including guitarists Roy Lanham and Billy Strange, bassist Red Wootten, drummer Earl Palmer, and pianist/accordion player Billy Liebert, it suffered due to a manufacturers glitch that saw side one repeated on both sides of the album. Despite a re-pressing, the damage had already been done, as record stores demanded their money back. The music contained within the "fully realized" version of Spectacular was more than worthy of its moniker, as West sounds more comfortable here than on any session in his career. The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been beneficial to that supergroup. No matter who you are, if you're a big enough country music star, sooner or later you're going to wind up making a Christmas album. So it was with Kenny Chesney and ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS. However, Chesney switched things up a bit by abandoning the usual reindeer-and-snowflakes motif in favor of a title song that finds him longing for a Yuletide island vacation a la Jimmy Buffett. The island sound even extends to an unconventional, calypso-style reworking of "Jingle Bells." Of course, Chesney's too savvy to leave his audience completely disoriented, so he includes a straightforward rendition of Willie Nelson's classic "Pretty Paper" with assistance from the red-headed stranger himself, and signs off with a faithful reading of "O Little Town of Bethlehem."
