2005's GRANDMASTERS collaboration between former Cypress Hill DJ Muggs and the Wu-Tang Clan's GZA precipitated the release of this instrumentals-only version. Working in sonic environments closer to that of Wu producer RZA than to the stoned grooves that made his work famous, GRANDMASTERS (INSTRUMENTALS) is rife with stern and ponderous rhythms marked by clean, clipped drum samples; an ominous drone to set the key; and various stabs of single guitar or piano notes to color the tracks.

The Wire (p.73) - "[T]here's a nice, hasty feel to the record, as though Muggs just threw a loop into the beat computer and GZA just started going....With Muggs's dirty, dashed-together beats and plenty of great guests...." Vibe (p.216) - "[With] the Cypress Hill vet's cryptic samples and glassy eyed grooves."

Grandmasters... Im feelin' the Queen's Gambit track and All In Together Now. DJ Muggs did good with the production, but I don't think he's as good as the Rza. The title speaks for itself, Gza is a Grandmaster without a doubt. Lets get All In Together Now on the radio!! Submitted by Johnnie (Dillon, SC) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
Dope Mix Genius and Muggs, good combo, and who would of knew. If you liked the previous work and arts of the two, then you'll love this colloborated album put together by the two. The Genius sounds really good on Muggs beats, and his double edge liquid sword is still sharp. Muggs beats are still ear piercing too. Submitted by seva_lat (Bronx, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Beats like these are what Wu Tang's rep was built on. Its in their DNA. GZA is a deep thinking, intelligent thug forefather in the rap game. Same with Muggs. Love it! Submitted by chronwell (Washington DC) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
