The first disc has some great songs. On the second disc, most of the songs sound like they've been re-recorded. Not the versions I wanted. No mention of this on packaging. Buyer Beware!

As major labels strained for more and more excuses to dump vault tracks into reissue compilations in the early 21st century, some of the anthology themes that were cooked up were pretty silly. Such was the case with Mullets Rock!, the common denominator being the hard rock of the 1970s and early '80s that those sporting the infamous mullet haircut were most likely to groove to. If you're going to go with the concept, you might as well go the whole way, and it must be admitted that this 35-track, two-CD set does a pretty thorough job. With all but one of the cuts falling between the years 1970 and 1984, this is something of a mini-textbook of the most popular bombastic hard rock songs you're likely to come across on AOR radio. Core classics of the genre such as Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water," Mountain's "Mississippi Queen," the Edgar Winter Group's "Frankenstein," Kansas' "Carry on Wayward Son," Grand Funk Railroad's "We're an American Band," Bachman-Turner Overdrive's "Takin' Care of Business," Meat Loaf's "Bat Out of Hell," Ram Jam's "Black Betty," Rick Derringer's "Rock & Roll, Hoochie Koo," and Argent's "Hold Your Head Up" are all here. In 1972, Stax Records was second only to Motown as America's most successful black-owned record company, and as part of an ambitious bid to grow into a multimedia empire, the Memphis-based label had opened offices in Los Angeles and was eager to announce its presence in the community. The Watts Summer Festival was an annual celebration staged in the beleaguered Watts neighborhood of L.A., a mostly African-American community that had been scarred by race riots in the late '60s, and in 1972 Stax did something special for the occasion: it staged an all-day concert at the Los Angeles Coliseum on the final day of the Watts festival, with nearly every artist on the Stax roster appearing live on-stage and tickets priced at only a dollar. Over 110, 000 people attended the show, a camera crew was on hand to capture the proceedings for a feature film, and a mobile recording truck committed the whole show to tape. Two albums featuring material from the Wattstax festival appeared in 1972 and 1973, but both contained studio recordings along with material from the concert, and Wattstax: Music from the Wattstax Festival and Film is a three-CD set that brings together the lion's share of the previously released live material from the show along with a handful of previously unreleased performances recorded that day. The title is a joking reference to the messianic anticipation that built up in the years between the Manchester, England rock band's 1989 debut--which Britain's New Musical Express magazine ranked as the greatest album of the '80s--and this 1995 follow-up.
