Edging up on its 10-year anniversary, Finnish metallers Children of Bodom have almost completely traded in their black metal roots for the sort of chunky, melodic action that many screamo acts built their entire sounds around. ARE YOU DEAD YET? doesn't hang up Children of Bodom's fondness for unrelenting aggression, but with the emphasis on clear, dramatic leads, slower rhythms, and garish novelties like their cover of the Ramones' "Somebody Put Something In My Drink," the band is enacting the sort of career change here that's intended to gain a much wider audience.
Children Of Bodom: Alexi Wildchild Laiho (vocals, guitar); Roope Ukk Latvala (guitars); Janne Jameson Warman (keyboards); Henkka T. Blacksmith (bass instrument); Jaska W. Raatikainen (drums).

A Must Buy!!! Children Of Bodom strike again, having been a fan since their debut album, I can easily say that this is one of their best albums since 'Something Wild.' I read many reviews on this album and for some reason many COB fans seem to be missing the boat here. How can anyone dispute the furious 'Livin Dead Beat,' 'Are You Dead Yet,' 'If You Want Peace... Prepare For War' and 'Next In Line.' Yes, COB are evolving and may not possess a few of the qualities, that made albums like 'Something Wild' so amazing, but that doesn't mean that they are conforming in any way, to modern trends. COB rely a bit less on the neo-classical, in favor of straight up "punch you in the FN' mouth" aggression. Still present is the amazing guitar vs keys dueling, and Alexi's venomous vocals. COB are certainly an original beast and to this day there is not one band that sounds like them. Hats off to COB for releasing another deadly album. A Great Album, but still... I'm like everyone else I still don't know what to think about this album. Most of the tracks are good, but they kind of have the same guitar rhythm. The one song I was disappointed in was Bastards of Bodom I think it's the worst Bodom-murder song (Bodom After Midnight or Silent Night, Bodom Night are the best). The best song on the album is Living Dead Beat, also of the bands best. This album is really different from the first four, i.e. less background keyboards, Laiho's vocals, and alot more shout choirs (a good thing). All in all this is a great Heavy/Industrial/"Bodom" Metal album. It's worth a listen.
One more thing, hardcore Bodom fans quit bitching and whining this isn't the end of the hate crew. Submitted by livingdeadbeat87 (Imperial, Ca) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Pleasantly surprised after all the negatives This album is actually quite good-i'd avoided it because fans of the group said it was an irredeemable piece of crap. This is not the case at all! It has all the fiery energy and aggression mixed with top-notch musicianship that we've come to expect from these fellows. The batch of songs isn't half-bad either; some of the lyrics seem to have an existentialist edge to them. Overall, a very worthwhile record. Pretty good This CD isn't near as bad as some people make it out to be. It IS a bit more "accessible," and not as headlong and fast, but there's still plenty to like about it. "Living Dead Beat" is one of the best songs they've done, and "Are You Dead Yet," "Trashed, Lost and Strung Out," and "We're Not Gonna Fall" are great as well. Also, the production is a bit clearer than on Hatecrew Deathroll, particularly with the drums, although Alexi's vocals no longer have that echoey effect and are now thrown into relieff, and thus shown to be not all that good. Still, if you aren't into the "cookie monster" style of vocals in general, you might just find Alexi one of the easier voices to listen to. The guitar and keyboard work, as usual, are outstanding, and the main attraction of the band. Again, the staunch purists may not like it, but it sounds fine to me. Are You Dead Yet?
$12.29 DOOMSDAY MACHINE carries the torch of memorable, riff-laden metal established on Arch Enemy's previous albums, a sound fueled by the guitar work of brothers Chris and Michael Amott (the latter formerly of Carcass). "Mechanic God Creation" beats with a classic metal heart, intensified by modern and extreme metal touches. "Slaves Of Yesterday" and "Machtkampf" brandish ripping solos and keen note choice, while "I Am Legend/Out For Blood" grooves with old-school thrash abandon. In the competitive realm of melodic death metal, Arch Enemy continues to evolve and remain vital.

Are You Dead Yet?
$12.49 {{ on sale now for $10.97, regularly $13.97 }}Found Sound is the addictive sonic offering from San Francisco based outfit, Sizemix. The title is not only symbolic of the band solidifying their own sound but also a testament to their compositional process. Sizemix found a way to translate their fluid improvisational structures into an album format. The tracks for the album were culled from what was previously free thematic material taken from their live repertoire.Sizemix is a genre blurring three-piece group consisting of Turntables, Guitar, and Bass. Their resulting sound blends elements of improvisation and their own take on trip-hop/hip-hop/downtempo electronic forms into an original format. Each member brings a unique background and perspective on music to the table, adding to the diverse directions their sound takes, and expanding the possibilities in tonal experimentation. All three members played for 2 years together in Varius Ardis, a five-piece (add trumpet and drums) before forming Sizemix in the Fall of 2002DJ Eye: TurntablesA DJ and Producer force to be reckoned with, DJ Eye is changing the way the Turntables fit in with live music. He has appeared with Del the Funky Homosapien, Tre Hardson, Lifesavas, and Madgesdiq and also performs with A Typical DJ and Ramiz the Manchild in the Turntablist/Hip-Hop group, Subliminal Twinkeez.Mike Nissen: GuitarA talented visual artist as well as natural musician, Mike brings his unique approach to guitar and live looping concepts to the mix. As with DJ Eye, Mike is changing the ways his instrument and live guitar looping function in a stripped down trio format. Mike has played in several Jazz, Funk, and Rock bands over the years and is a certified luthier, playing a custom guitar he built in 1999. Mike's keen sensitivity and taste are a crucial ingredient to the Sizemix sound as are his fresh perspectives on sound color and contagious optimism. His role as principal "painter" in Sizemix is faithfully fulfilled and not to be missed.Jason Hoopes: BassJason, a multi-instrumentalist, has worked in Metal, ...
