Children of Bodom: Alexi Laiho (vocals, guitar); Roope Ukk Latvala (guitars); Janne Jameson Warman (keyboards); Henkka T Blacksmith (bass instrument); Jaska Raatikainen (drums). Audio Mixer: Mikko Karmila. Recording information: Astia Studios (05/2004-05/2005); Finnox, East-Helsinki, Finland (05/2004-05/2005); Hastfittan Studios, East-Helsinki, Finland (05/2004-05/2005). Photographer: Toni Härkönen. Edging up on its 10-year anniversary, Finnish metallers Children of Bodom have almost completely traded in their black metal roots for the sort of chunky, melodic action that many screamo acts built their entire sounds around. ARE YOU DEAD YET? doesn't hang up Children of Bodom's fondness for unrelenting aggression, but with the emphasis on clear, dramatic leads, slower rhythms, and garish novelties like their cover of the Ramones' "Somebody Put Something In My Drink," the band is enacting the sort of career change here that's intended to gain a much wider audience. With the presence of brutal riffs and keyboards, Finland's Children of Bodom sounds at times like Fear Factory fronted by a hardcore screamer, especially on their 2005 release, Are You Dead Yet? The group's fifth studio album (which was co-produced by Children of Bodom and Mikko Karmila, the chap who produced their previous outing, 2003's Hate Crew Deathroll) shows the quintet plowing full steam ahead, as the venom continues to bubble to the surface throughout. But the group also has an unmistakable prog metal edge to boot, as the tricky interplay between guitarist Alexi Wildchild Laiho (who also doubles as vocalist) and keyboardist Janne Warmen on "Punch Me I Bleed" certainly brings to mind Dream Theater. And since it's nearly impossible to hear any new European metal band from the mid-'90s onward and not hear an unmistakable Iron Maiden influence, the guitar work between Laiho and Roope Latvala in "Bastards of Bodom" certainly brings to mind Dave Murray and Adrian Smith. Although they may often be lumped in with the majority of other European "extreme metal" bands, there is definitely a progressive air that surrounds Children of Bodom. ~ Greg Prato Children Of Bodom Are You Dead Yet? A Must Buy!!! Children Of Bodom strike again, having been a fan since their debut album, I can easily say that this is one of their best albums since 'Something Wild.' I read many reviews on this album and for some reason many COB fans seem to be missing the boat here. How can anyone dispute the furious 'Livin Dead Beat,' 'Are You Dead Yet,' 'If You Want Peace... Prepare For War' and 'Next In Line.' Yes, COB are evolving and may not possess a few of the qualities, that made albums like 'Something Wild' so amazing, but that doesn't mean that they are conforming in any way, to modern trends. COB rely a bit less on the neo-classical, in favor of straight up "punch you in the FN' mouth" aggression. Still present is the amazing guitar vs keys dueling, and Alexi's venomous vocals. COB are certainly an original beast and to this day there is not one band that sounds like them. Hats off to COB for releasing another deadly album. A Great Album, but still... I'm like everyone else I still don't know what to think about this album. Most of the tracks are good, but they kind of have the same guitar rhythm. The one song I was disappointed in was Bastards of Bodom I think it's the worst Bodom-murder song (Bodom After Midnight or Silent Night, Bodom Night are the best). The best song on the album is Living Dead Beat, also of the bands best. This album is really different from the first four, i.e. less background keyboards, Laiho's vocals, and alot more shout choirs (a good thing). All in all this is a great Heavy/Industrial/"Bodom" Metal album. It's worth a listen.
One more thing, hardcore Bodom fans quit bitching and whining this isn't the end of the hate crew. Submitted by livingdeadbeat87 (Imperial, Ca) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Pleasantly surprised after all the negatives This album is actually quite good-i'd avoided it because fans of the group said it was an irredeemable piece of crap. This is not the case at all! It has all the fiery energy and aggression mixed with top-notch musicianship that we've come to expect from these fellows. The batch of songs isn't half-bad either; some of the lyrics seem to have an existentialist edge to them. Overall, a very worthwhile record. Pretty good This CD isn't near as bad as some people make it out to be. It IS a bit more "accessible," and not as headlong and fast, but there's still plenty to like about it. "Living Dead Beat" is one of the best songs they've done, and "Are You Dead Yet," "Trashed, Lost and Strung Out," and "We're Not Gonna Fall" are great as well. Also, the production is a bit clearer than on Hatecrew Deathroll, particularly with the drums, although Alexi's vocals no longer have that echoey effect and are now thrown into relieff, and thus shown to be not all that good. Still, if you aren't into the "cookie monster" style of vocals in general, you might just find Alexi one of the easier voices to listen to. The guitar and keyboard work, as usual, are outstanding, and the main attraction of the band. Again, the staunch purists may not like it, but it sounds fine to me. $12.65 Cold: Scooter Ward (vocals); Terry Balsamo (acoustic & electric guitars); Kelly Hayes (guitar); Jeremy Narshall (bass); Sam McCandless (drums). Recorded at Bay 7 Studios, Valley Village, California and Sparky Dark Studio, Calabasas, California. While no less a nu-metal authority than Fred Durst was their original benefactor, Jacksonville's Cold has always had a secret weapon in its heavy rock arsenal: mouthpiece. It's mouthpiece Scooter Ward's powerful singing -- not shouting or rapping, like so many of his contemporaries -- that distances he and his mates from the pack. This doesn't mean they're better; indeed, Cold's first two releases weren't consistently strong efforts. However, with the release of Year of the Spider, Cold has placed more emphasis on atmospherics, centered itself behind Ward's lyrics, and has even collaborated with Weezer. While these moves might alienate some metalheads out there, it's a great way of surviving the coming day of judgment, when the bell will toll for all but the best of the nu-metal moaners. Year of the Spider was produced by Howard Benson, who's best-known for masterminding P.O.D.'s triple-platinum Satellite. Just as that group tempers its pummeling rhythms with passionate lyricism, so Benson has massaged the aggro-metal of Cold's initial releases into a better framework for Ward's gruff croon and deeply personal lyrics. Grappling with a family crisis, Ward pleads bitterly and openly in "Cure My Tragedy (A Letter to God)": "If you make the world a stage for me then I hope that you can hear me scream," he sings. "Don't take her smile away from me she's ...
