Economy is We Are Scientists' strong suit: most songs clock in at three to four minutes, and the whole album draws to a crashing close before the 40-minute mark. Likewise, the band demonstrates a sharp sense of songcraft, mixing edgy, angular ... Full Descriptionguitar riffs with sexy, danceable rhythms and topping the combo off with hooky, infectious refrains. WITH LOVE AND SQUALOR won't win any awards for originality, but it is a strong, stylish debut that provides the perfect soundtrack for combing one's hair before a night out in the borough.
Like seemingly every other band from the mid-2000s underground boom, We Are Scientists live in Brooklyn, dress in mock-nerd attire, and subsist on a steady diet of '80s albums by the likes of the Cure, Duran Duran, XTC, and the Smiths. Yet while the trio's music will draw immediate comparisons to similar-sounding contemporaries Franz Ferdinand and the Killers, that doesn't detract from the fun, lean, arty pop-punk that fills out the band's major-label debut WITH LOVE AND SQUALOR.
We Are Scientists: Keith Murray (vocals, guitar); Chris Cain (bass guitar, background vocals); Michael Tapper (drums, background vocals).
Entertainment Weekly (p.71) - "[T]heir third-gen post-punk is saved by some winning choruses and singer Keith Murray's swaggering come-ons..." - Grade: B- Mojo (Publisher) (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A] band mastering that mysterious reaction that turns bedsit angst into dancefloor gold." With Love And Squalor album
$11.59 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy ...

With Love And Squalor music CDs
$10.59 In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with twangy, down-home feel of alt-country and folk music.
I'M WIDE AWAKE begins with Oberst telling a story that morphs into "At the Bottom of Everything," ...

| | Bob Luman Let's Think About Living: His Recordings 1955-1967 CDs (2006) Import; Boxed Set
With Love And Squalor songs
$153.15 Rockabilly luminary Bob Luman never became a huge star, but he did have a Top 10 hit ("Let's Think About Living") and a solid career of recordings, and has been revered for years by fans of early country and rock music. This admirably thorough compilation--part of Bear Family's excellent series of rockabilly retrospectives--contains four CDs' worth of music, as well as a hardbound 104-page book with photos and notes. This makes a nice companion piece to Bear Family's box set of later recordings.
From the moment he discovered Elvis in August 1955 and followed the King across the Texas Plains, Bob Luman's career as a rocker was set in stone. It was just a matter of time before he would follow in Presley's footsteps. Although Bob Luman has become an icon to rockabilly collectors today, his earliest recordings are scattered across dozens of obscure or out-of-print LPs and CDs, with sound quality often leaving much to be desired. Finally, Bear Family has released the box set that Bob Luman's fans have eagerly awaited. This box gathers together all of Luman's earliest records, including his 1955 Texas recordings and his contribution ...

Scientists Come Up With Right Formula Having only heard the single 'The Great Escape' i wasn't sure what to expect when i bought this CD. But to my pleasent surprize i found a CD to rank up there with the best of the year so far. 'With Love And Squalor' combines edgy, yet sharp guitar riffs with a sometimes off-kilter rhythm and punchy lyrics to deliver many catchy hooks throughout the album. Having been compared to Franz Ferdinand and The Killers i'd say the trio take more to the form of fellow indie rockers Hot Hot Heat. Using similar multi-layered new wave/art rock styles throughout their major label debut album. With most songs clocking in around the 3 minute mark each song manages to make an impact before actually allowing you to get bored of them. With stand out tracks such as 'The Great Escape', 'Inaction', and 'Cash Cow'and some good changes of pace, the album rolls along smoothly from start to finish. With such a large amount of potential and a bunch of amazingly fun, new/wave rock songs on this album i'm eagerly looking forward to there next album. This easily lived up to any expectations you could have of a quality new/wave indie rock album with just the right formula to make this one of the best of 2006.
