| | Chris De Burgh Road To Freedom CD Chris De Burgh Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
Something that always seems to draw the ire of rock fans is when a veteran artist decides to suddenly change his sound to fit with current trends in hopes of winning over a new set of fans. This certainly isn't the case with Chris de Burgh's 2004 release, The Road to Freedom. Continuing with the same stately and pristine sounds that resulted in a flirtation with the U.S. Top 40 during the mid-'80s ("The Lady in Red," etc.), Freedom could have easily been released in 1984 rather than 2004. As a result, the focus remains the same -- stark arrangements, de Burgh's Peter Gabriel-esque vocals, new age-ish lyrics, etc. The string-heavy "Snow Is Falling" may sound a bit too much like a tender Broadway ballad for fans of "Don't Pay the Ferryman"; likewise the more sonically understated "Songbird." De Burgh does pick up the pace elsewhere (e.g., "What You Mean to Me" and "Read My Name"), but it all tends to sound the same from both a musical and emotional standpoint. ~ Greg Prato
Personnel: Phil Palmer (guitars); Chris Cameron (piano); Peter Gordon (keyboards); Rick Mitra (electric bass); Danny Cummings (drums, percussion).

Road To Freedom album
$9.58 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart ...
| | Jimmy Buffett Buffet Hotel CD (2009)
Road To Freedom CD music
$9.74 Since Jimmy Buffett never leaves his comfort zone, it's hard to call 2009's Buffet Hotel a return to roots but, in a way, it is. Discounting the mock rap on "Turn Up the Heat and Chill the Rosé," this album doesn't even have the lingering country and reggae flavors that seasoned 2006's Take the Weather with You, with all of the songs riding a cool, mellow country-rock wave, the kind that has been his stock-in-trade ...

| | Lady Gaga Fame Monster CD (2009)
Road To Freedom songs
$8.79 Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything ...

| | Bon Jovi Circle CD (2009)
Road To Freedom CD music
$11.17 Bon Jovi's 2007 effort, LOST HIGHWAY, found New Jersey's finest brandishing a Nashville-tinged, commercial rock/country crossover sound that wasn't too far a stretch from their usual arena rocking anthems for the Everyman. And where that album sometimes tried too hard to fit into the conventions of trad country, sacrificing some of the fist-pumping potency of their best `90s-era efforts in the process, THE CIRCLE, the band's fifth studio effort of the `00s, is a back-to-roots return to form focused on uplifting hooks and a hard-hitting guitar ...
| | Michael Schenker Group CD (1980) Japan; Reissue
Road To Freedom music CDs
$24.45 Following his tenure in pioneering German metal band the Scorpions and U.K. hard rockers UFO, guitarist Michael Schenker formed his own band with singer Gary Barden, debuting with 1980's MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP, featuring the single "Cry for the Nations."
After his lengthy stints with the Scorpions and UFO, Michael Schenker could be forgiven for indulging his incendiary fretboard skills throughout the entirety of this 1980 solo debut. Instead, it's a solid group effort that has aged surprisingly well, with Schenker artfully deploying his talents on full-bodied ...

| | Mott The Hoople Two Miles From Live Heaven CD (1980) Bonus Tracks
Road To Freedom music CDs
$14.35 Taking its name from the first ever visit to the Mott The Hoople archives, the early 1980s' Two Miles From Heaven out-takes collection, Two Miles From Live Heaven adheres to the same high standards as its predecessor with the unearthing, at last, of one of the best known (and most sought-after) of all Mott documents, the 1974 Santa Monica Civic show. Originally recorded and broadcast by the King Biscuit Flour Hour, the show has sustained some of Mott's most cherished bootlegs, including the legendary Behind Enemy Lines. Since then, odd tracks have filtered out on various official collections, but Two Miles From Live Heaven marks the first ever appearance of the entire show, and it was well worth the wait.
Opening with Ian Hunter's a cappella drawl through the first verse of "American Pie", it then crashes into a phenomenal "Golden Age Of Rock'n'Roll", before charging on through a set that doesn't put one foot wrong in its portrayal of the Ariel Bender-era band at its peak. From obscure b-sides ("Rest In Peace") to even more obscure solo shots (Bender's own "Here Comes The Queen", from his Under Open Skies album), from key album tracks to monster hit singles, and all wrapping up with a fabulous "All The Young Dudes", this remains the only Mott live show that everyone needs to hear.
But, of course, it won't be. A 2CD package also serves up highlights from two further Mott shows, similarly recorded on US tour duty. Five tracks from a Fillmore East gig in 1971 include ...
