(12 Customer Reviews)
This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Just when it seemed that System of a Down couldn't do anything to improve on their standing as the most unique and ambitious band in the alternative metal world, they decided to drop their sprawling, Rick Rubin-produced double album by releasing each disc separately. Early 2005 saw the arrival of MESMERIZE. After that album gained significant exposure via tours, radio, and videos, the album's counterpart, HYPNOTIZE, was released in late November. The albums were recorded in the same sessions--so there is a strong sense of musical cohesion, and even the CD packages themselves are designed to fit together to form one set.
"Attack" and "Dreaming" the first songs on HYPNOTIZE, are classic System of a Down with their furious riffage, schizophrenic song structures, and the slinky, nasal vocals of lead singer Serj Tankian. The band knows how to craft a hook ("Kill Rock 'N Roll," "She's Like Heroin"), raise political consciousness ("Stealing Society" is about the Armenian genocide), and rock with the ferocity of the heaviest speed and thrash metal bands. In short, System of a Down seems capable of doing anything, and HYPNOTIZE is further, indisputable proof of that fact.
This dualdisc includes the entire album on the CD side and the entire album in Enhanced LPCM Stereo on the DVD side.
System Of A Down: Daron Malakian (vocals, guitar); Serj Tankian (vocals, keyboards); Shavo Odadjian (bass instrument); John Dolmayan (drums).
Recording information: The Mansion At Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, California.Rolling Stone (No. 988, p.117) - 3.5 out of 5 stars - "...Hell immediately runneth over on Malakian's scoured-staccato guitars and Dolmayan's furious hammering...." Spin (p.102) - "[The first album's] tracks, all around four minutes long, ricochet through a clutch of ideas, compressing what might otherwise be prog-rock suites into jump-cut barrages. That strategy certainly keeps the songs moving..." -- Grade: B Spin (p.62) - Ranked #20 in Spin's "40 Best Albums Of 2005" - "America's most compelling metal band hones a mash-up of Cali-punk absurdism, political outrage, and jump-cut headbanging." Entertainment Weekly (No. 851, p.100) - "...[T]hey're flaunting a heretofore underexplored sensitive side, offsetting their trademark stampeding riffology with flashes of delicate lyricism...." - Grade: B+ Uncut (p.109) - 3 stars out of 5 - "System succeed through their skill at wielding complex, progressive heaviness in a pop context." Each and every song is a strong manifestation and a hugely successful combination of great rock music and socio-political lyrics. Thank you for being and performing the way you do. $9.29 "Chop Suey!" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
"Aerials" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Hard Rock Performance.
While System of a down are often cast with the nu-metal crowd, their sound is closer to '80s thrash (and even hardcore punk) than to any of the rap-metal hordes. Grinding guitars and death-knell drums may be the order of the day, but they work in service of a highly developed socio-political consciousness. In fact, when he's not lacerating his vocal cords, singer Tankian delivers his rebellious lyrics in a tone reminiscent of infamous Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra. Make no mistake, the thrash quotient on TOXICITY is high enough to satiate even the ...

$7.09 STEAL THIS ALBUM contains outtakes and previously unreleased tracks.
Even considering the enormous popularity of nu-metal in the late '90s and early '00s, the initial mass commercial acceptance of System Of A Down was pretty surprising. On STEAL THIS ALBUM! the wildly eclectic group continues to push the envelope by even more aggressively ...

$11.09 What can you say about a band that can find, to quote one song title, "Serenity In Murder?" And that can write a poetic, detailed observation on the subject?
Nothing that scores of critics haven't said about this shocking heavy-metal band for years, except that they're quite good at it. While their ultraviolent songs are figments of their overactive imaginations, the rage they give ...

$11.15 NOTE: LORDS A LEAPING VOLUME II IS AVAILABLE ALSO! GO TO: www.cdbaby.com/lordsaleapingLords a Leaping Volume I is a collection of original Christmas music written and performed by a group of songwriting friends in Central Pennsylvania. Songwriter John Cimino grew up listening to Christmas classics by Bing Crosby, Perry Como, and Mel Torme, and wanted to create "new classics" for this generation to enjoy. In 2002, Cimino teamed with drummer Michael Hughes, Pianist Brett Albert, and vocalists Adam and Jennifer Bell to record Volume I. Volume II was recorded and released in 2004 and is also available on CD Baby. Volume III is currently in production and is set for release in 2007. Lords a Leaping combines Jazz, Pop, and Rock with well-crafted lyrics and memorable melodies. The result is a diverse and refreshing array of holiday music that the whole family can enjoy.Cimino's band, "Thunderbox," and Hughes' band "The Worry Knot" also have cd's available on CDBABY. Check them out!A REVIEW OF VOLUME I FROM RICHARD BANKS OF CHRISTMASREVIEWS.COMI knew right away that Lords a Leaping was not your usual plate of Christmas sweet 'taters when I heard Jennifer Bell's unusual retooling of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, which boasts an all-new contemporary pop structure, melody and words. The CD continues in this vein--or in almost every vein--with old songs made new, and each performed in a somewhat different style from the last. There's Christmas Time Is Here, jazzeliciously sung ahead of the beat by Ms. Bell), there's fine, refined riffing on guitar on a rock solid instrumental Silent Night), and there's a 5-pack ...
