Pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, in a trio with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron, explores ten songs from movies scored by Italian film composer Ennio Morricone. While none of the pieces are standards, the ten that were chosen are each easily adaptable to jazz. Ranging from romps to waltzes and mood pieces, the music is (not too surprisingly) often cinematic and episodic, but the songs fare well standing independent of the films. Several of the pieces deserve to be covered by other jazz musicians looking for fresh material. While Pieranunzi is the lead voice, Johnson and Baron make important contributions to the swinging music. Recommended. ~ Scott YanowDown Beat (p.76) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Pieranunzi plays with a thoughtful, sensitive approach that invites comparisons to Bill Evans. He revels in a gorgeous melody like 'Addio Fratello Crudele,' but he's also mindful of the tension and irony that surface in Morricone's compositions." JazzTimes (p.111) - "Pieranunzi actually played on some of the original soundtracks, and his lush, dramatic lyricism here is an inspired jazz response to Morricone's cinematic soundscapes." | | Terry Callier New Folk Sound CD (1964)
Play Morricone album
$12.49 Nowadays, people know different. But when Terry Callier's first album sneaked out to little fanfare in the mid '60s, he was still Chicago's best-kept secret. It would be some time before he had an opportunity to fully exploit his soul and jazz influences. Callier's youthful voice, backed sympathetically here by his acoustic guitar plus two basses, was a strikingly androgynous instrument--sounding like a smooth, steady Nina Simone minus the simmering anger.
Over eight songs, four of them traditional, Callier's relaxed air belies his tender years. His calm presence turns the yearning "900 Miles" into a thing of haunting beauty. Selections such as "Oh Dear, What Can the Matter Be" and "Cotton Eyed Joe" are the real oddities, however, even in the remarkably varied Callier canon. Certainly the riff-driven "It's About Time" shows its teeth, a warm-hearted plea for peace more familiar to Callier converts. In hindsight, THE NEW FOLK SOUND doesn't look unhappy in the company of early Buckley, Hardin, et al. On its own merits, there is much more than mere curiosity value to recommend it. False starts are rarely so engaging.
The New Folk Sound of Terry Callier was not released until 1968, about three years after the project was originally completed; while the long delay almost certainly crippled the momentum of Callier's fledgling career, the impact on the music itself was at most minimal -- while not the singer's best album, it's his most timeless and inviting, adhering closely to the folk stylings addressed by the title while largely ignoring the mystical jazz dimensions that texture his later material. Surprisingly, none of the album's eight songs are originals, relying instead on traditional tunes like "900 Miles" and "Cotton Eyed Joe"; while Callier's spiralling acoustic guitar lines and the use of two bassists (Terbour Attenborough and John Tweedle) ...

$15.55 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
If it can be believed, Poncho's band is as tight on-stage as they are in the studio. With intricate hits from the percussion section and screaming horn kicks, all with Swiss watch timing, it is no wonder that Sanchez is one of the best-known bandleaders in Latin jazz. The only cue to the listener that this is a live recording is the enthusiastic applause of the adoring audience at the Montreux Jazz Festival. As has become a hallmark of Sanchez's particular style, almost all the tunes strut along at guaracha tempo, barely ever breaking a sweat. Similarly, the repertoire choices tend to hover around bluesy changes and soul ...

Since his days in Foster & Lloyd, anyone who has been paying attention knows about Foster's big, strong, expressive voice and his estimable skills as a lyricist, and his sixth studio album, This World We Live In, finds him squarely in contemporary country territory without abandoning his instincts as a rocker, and he makes the mixture work like a charm. Foster kicks off the proceedings with an updated bit of honky ...
