| | Pharrell In My Mind CD Pharrell Discography of CDs
(54 Customer Reviews)
The overall feel of IN MY MIND falls somewhere between hip-hop and urban contemporary R&B, whether on the spare, electro-funk beats of "Keep It Playa" or the smooth, seductive groove of "Baby." A figure as in-demand as Pharrell can get just about any guest he wants, and the list for IN MY MIND is an impressive one: Slim Thug, Nelly, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Kanye West, and Gwen Stefani, all of whom were Pharrell clients at one point or another, make appearances. The artist's own vocals and MC skills aren't quite equal to his expertise behind the boards, but the shortcoming is easy enough to forgive, thanks to the album's carefully constructed, dazzling sonic treats.
As a member of the massively influential recording teams the Neptunes and N.E.R.D., Pharrell Williams slowly made a name for himself in the late 1990s and early 2000s as one of the hottest producers on the scene. IN MY MIND, from 2006, is the artist's first full-length solo album, and it brims with Pharrell's trademark production flourishes and cross-genre sampling.
Personnel: Pharrell (vocals, keyboards, programming); Gwen Stefani (vocals); Jay-Z, Kanye West, Nelly, Pusha T, Slim Thug, Snoop Dogg (rap vocals).

In My Mind
$11.89 Rapper/producer Kanye West's second album, LATE REGISTRATION, incredibly lives up to expectations following his universally acclaimed debut, THE COLLEGE DROPOUT, which took the art of sampling to a new plateau. Here, for example, "Gold Digger" features a sample of the legendary Ray Charles alongside actor Jamie Foxx in Oscar-reprising character as Charles. "Addiction" pairs a frenetic African beat with a stuttering, singular use of a snippet of Etta James crooning "My Funny Valentine," while "Diamonds From the Sierra Leone" teams the majestic Bond glory of Shirley Bassey's "Diamonds Are Forever" with perfectly subtle Miami bass to explosive effect. All the while, West pulls lyrics out of his rhyme bag at a fever pitch, tackling hefty topics like civil war in Africa and the impact of drugs on leading Black minds.
Throughout the album, West merely continues to perfect his craft, slowing tracks down and speeding them up into an awe-inspiring mosaic. While his MC style is often discounted as being of secondary importance, he shines when put up against the best in the game, as with Common on the bluesy "My Way Home" or Nas on the lush "We Major." And in the spirit of Bob Dylan, West knows how to make the most of a very original voice. LATE REGISTRATION is ample proof of ...
| | Chamillionaire Sound Of Revenge CD (2005) Parental Advisory
In My Mind
$13.35 With THE SOUND OF REVENGE, Chamillionaire's 2005 Universal debut, the Houston-based rapper makes the most of his major-label deal, which includes his own Chamillitary imprint. On SOR, Paul Wall's former collaborator amps up that duo's signature chopped-and-screwed mixtape sound with heavy-duty arrangements that expertly showcase Chamillionaire's deep, husky voice. The introductory title track is marked by machine-gun beats, and establishes the album's ...
| | Outkast Idlewild CD (2006) Parental Advisory
In My Mind
$8.99 Coming off the enormous success of their double album SPEARBOXXX/THE LOVE BELOW, Outkast continue to prove themselves to be one of the most unusual acts in hip-hop with IDLEWILD, the album companion to the movie-musical of the same name. On this, their seventh full-length release, Andre 3000 and Big Boi break new ground, expanding their repertoire of musical experimentation by putting together 25 unconventional hip-hop tracks with twists of soul, gospel, and ragtime in line with the 1930s era represented in the film.
The more traditional playalistic Cadillac-centered rhymes that characterized the duo's debut album make a few appearances here on tracks like "Morris Brown," but overall Big Boi's gangsta lyricism takes a back seat on this one, with Andre's crossover-pop sound dominating with the tracks "Life Is Like A Musical," "Makes No Sense At All," and "When I Look Into Your Eyes." Unfortunately, the most rewarding ...
| | Busta Rhymes Big Bang CD (2006)
In My Mind
$10.79 While his output has been less than consistent, Busta Rhymes has always been one of the most distinctive and entertaining rappers in hip-hop. THE BIG BANG (2006) found Busta evolving as a stylist and a rhymesayer, slowing down his patented breakneck flow a bit while losing none of his agility, complexity, or precision. He also expanded the range of his narratives to include more introspective writing, though he still rocks a party on club tracks like "Touch It."
But the most notable thing here is the production. With the legendary Dr. Dre at the boards, THE BIG BANG boasts some of Busta's sharpest tracks, packing an overall sonic wallop that will leave listeners ...
| | Rick Ross Port Of Miami CD (2006)
In My Mind

| | Nas I Am... CD (1999)
In My Mind
$6.79 I AM was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.
The original street poet is back. The third chapter in Nas' book of scriptures comes at a time when hip-hop starves for what made the rapper famous: intelligent, realistic songs with a hardcore street edge. I AM combines the underground feel of ILLMATIC with the commercial appeal of IT WAS WRITTEN. Fortunately for Nas, the production matches up to his superior lyrical ...

| | Tracy Chapman Let It Rain CD (2002) (Import) International Album; Australia
In My Mind
$13.79 Tracey Chapman's sixth album continues her tradition of immaculately crafted, self-effacing, deceptively low-key songs that consistently get to the root of things. That the most commercial track here ("Say Hallelujah") is about a funeral speaks volumes about Chapman's songwriting approach. "The bucket is kicked/The body is gone" she sings prosaically; "Eternal rest for the weary/Mourners party tonight." It's a catchy song that manages to retain its optimism despite its mortal subject.
With LET IT RAIN Chapman seems to be settling in to an acceptance of her cult status after her initial success with "Fast Car" and the later "Give Me One Reason." This is high-quality songwriting in a natural setting. There are few flashy production tricks save a vocal effect or two, and no visible straining after a hit in evidence. Her emotions are laid bare time and again on tracks such as "In the Dark," with its confessional ambience, while "Hard Wired" is as close to a diatribe as Chapman gets, its subject the invasion of privacy in the name of commerce. ...
