| | Youssou N'Dour Egypt CD (2004)
Pedro & Thiago songs
$14.99 International pop star Youssou N'Dour explores of the themes and sounds of Senegal's Sufi culture on this striking 2004 release. Markedly different than the artist's other albums, on which African elements combine with Caribbean influence and various American styles (including soul, jazz, and rock), EGYPT moves away from N'Dour's trademark pop and deep into the territory of traditional religious music. Though characterized by an undercurrent of West African rhythms and inflections, the sound here--as the title indicates--draws on North African and Middle Eastern Arab music, and features such regional instruments as the oud, the arghul (a double-reed bamboo flute), tablas, and various Arab Gulf percussion.
There is a distinct classical aura here (the personnel list includes an arranger, a conductor, and a score manager). ...

| | Manny Oquendo On The Move! (Muevete!) CD (1996)
Pedro & Thiago CD music
$12.49 The strong and powerful influence of African music is hard to miss on this CD, which illustrates the rich cultural heritage of blacks in Bahia and Northeastern Brazil (a region that has produced many musical greats). Legends like Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, and Machito were on the scene, so aspiring young salseros assumed they had no choice but to give 200 percent. The percussionist and his longtime partner Andy Gonzales bring that unwavering work ethic to On the Move! (Muevete!), an outstanding live date recorded at Bimbo's 365 Club in San Francisco. When a 65-year-old Oquendo and his band Libre tear into Bobby Capo's familiar cha-cha "Piel Canela" and infectious originals like "No Cuentes," "Chaquilla Ideal," "Oquendo Y Libre" (a celebration of New York's salsa scene), and the descarga (Afro-Cuban jam) "Muevete un Poco," it's clear that a genuine master of salsa is very hard at work. Though salsa dominates this set, Oquendo triumphantly switches to Latin jazz for an engaging ...
| | Earl Hooker Moon Is Rising CD (1998)
Pedro & Thiago music CDs
$14.29 The first eight tracks of this 79-minute compilation of late-'60s material originally appeared on Arhoolie's Hooker'n'Steve LP; a couple of others showed up on Arhoolie's His First & Last Recordings, while the four remaining cuts were previously unreleased. Hooker didn't have long to live when these were laid down in 1968 and (for the most part) 1969, but he's in real good form on guitar, although he only takes an occasional vocal (other band members help out on other tracks, and some are instrumental). Indications are from the liner notes that the sessions were run on a no-frills budget, but it's very respectable '60s Chicago electric blues with a shade of funky soul and a hot live feel, and Hooker's guitar has an upfront bite and presence. Actually, the instrumentals are highlights, particularly "Hooker N' Steve" with its smoking guitar-organ duets. ...
| | Rob McConnell Big Band Christmas CD (1998)
Pedro & Thiago songs
$9.65 Rob McConnell & The Boss Brass: Rob McConnell (leader, valve trombone); Moe Koffman (soprano & alto saxophones, piccolo, flute, clarinet); John Johnson (soprano & alto saxophones, flute, clarinet); Pat LaBarbera (soprano & tenor saxophones, flute, clarinet); Alex Dean (tenor saxophone, flute, clarinet); Bob Leonard (baritone saxophone, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet); Dave Dunlop, Steve McDade, John MacLeod, Guido Basso, Kevin Turcotte (trumpet, flugelhorn); Alastair Kay, Bob Livingston, Jerry Johnson (trombone); Ernie Pattison (bass trombone); James MacDonald, Judy Kay (French horn); David Restivo (piano); Ed Bickert (guitar); Jim Vivian (bass); Ted Warren (drums); Brian Leonard (percussion).
"What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement.
Rob McConnell & the Boss Brass add plenty of spice to this Christmas jazz CD, not only with superb, fresh charts but a few surprising selections. The rich brass and reeds carry the deliberate rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," which segues into a perky Latin-flavored chart of "I'll Be Home for Christmas." "Away in a Manger" is not the commonly heard melody but one first written in 1887, though the music will likely be familiar, even if one doesn't associate it with the well-known lyrics. The lush setting of "The Christmas Song," which likely set Mel Tormé and Bob Wells for life with ...
| | Percy Mayfield Live CD (1992)
Pedro & Thiago album
$13.39 All songs written by Percy Mayfield except "The Highway Is Like A Woman" (Mayfield/James).
LIVE was originally recorded for the KTIM-FM (San Francisco, CA) Blue Monday Party radio broadcasts.
Although the first-ever release of live Mayfield material is culled from performances between 1981 and 1983, the twilight of the singer's blues career, he remains in fine, laidback voice throughout. The selections draw on all periods of his three decades as a songwriter, and include "Please Send Me Someone to Love," "The River's Invitation," and "Don't Start Lying to Me." Founding Paul Butterfield Blues Band pianist ...
