"Again" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance and was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.
For the five albums prior to the release of GREATEST HITS, Kravitz doggedly mined the influence of late-1960s/early-'70s icons Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Sly Stone, and Curtis Mayfield, churning out groovy, guitar-heavy music that updated those classic sounds without necessarily reinventing them. But all of this, ironically, is to his credit, because it is the overwhelming familiarity of Kravitz's sound that holds such powerful appeal.
GREATEST HITS collects Kravitz's best-known singles under one cover, from the blazing Hendrix-inspired opener "Are You Gonna Go My Way" to the Philly Soul ballad "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over" (complete with backing strings) to his stadium-tailored cover of the Guess Who's "American Woman." The set reaches back to Kravitz's 1989 debut, LET LOVE RULE, and up to 2000's previously unreleased single "Again," showcasing, all the while, the performer's knack for pleasure-triggering songcraft, singing, and production. Though some critics may thumb their noses at Kravitz's blatantly retro music, his tunes are undeniably raucous, catchy, and fun.
Personnel includes: Lenny Kravitz (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, sitar, bass, drums); Abraham Appleman, Elena Barere, Barry Finclair, Regis Iandiorio, Jean Ingraham, Paul Peabody, Joel Pitchon, Richard Sortomme, Dale Stuckenbruck (violin); Lamar Alsop, Julien Barber, Susan Pray (viola); Richard Locker, Eugene Moye, Mark Shuman, Fred Zlotkin (cello); Richard Sarpola (bass).
Engineers include: Henry Hirsch, Kevin Halpin.
Lenny Kravitz - Greatest Hits Songs
Greatest Hits Music Review
Average Rating: (3.2 out of 5 stars) List All 10 Reviews Kravitz is best Lenny kravitz is one of the last musicians to really explore the art of music. His songs are pure, alternative and very melodical. His lack of conformisme and the knowledge to play most instruments makes him one of the last mohicans Submitted by a reviewer (Rotterdam, Netherlands) Was This Review Helpful? Don't Listen To The Critics This is a great compilation by a highly talented musician and songwriter. Those who criticize likely do so because his style is more like the best of the 70's than the worst of the "new gen" untalented idiot bands like Greenday and the aptly named All American Rejects. If you are steeped in rock and roll of ALL genres and not just terribly limited in your outlook and tastes you will appreciate Kravitz's style and virtuosity. The choices included here are a fine representation of Kravitz's work, but I would only recommend even such a great compilation as this if you don't want to buy his other albums, all of which are excellent with almost no mediocre inclusions. Frankly, I feel it was too early to release a Greatest Hits album, but the record companies always seem to want to squeeze a little more profit as soon as an artist has a few albums under the belt. Lenny is a long way from lapsing into obscurity, as his 2004 release "Baptism" proves (a fabulous album). Submitted by Sporkman h2omark (Charlotte, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Lenny might be lame, but his music is good listening Not knowing much about Lenny Kravitz in the past, I've always like most of his music, especially 'Are You Gonna Go My Way'. Awesome track. Now I see who he is, I think he's kind of lame, but his music still rocks. This album has all the good stuff.
