Breathe
$14.37 Originally intended as a chronicle of Michael Jackson's possible reascension to the pop king throne by way of a massive 50-date tour, the documentary THIS IS IT became something much different when Jackson suddenly died mere weeks before its kickoff. Now a movie capturing the complicated figure in vulnerable moments during the last days of his life, THIS IS IS boasts a soundtrack comprised of the classic originals of the hits featured in the film. It also contains a new single co-written by Paul Anka and featuring Jackson's brothers on back-up vocals, as well as a variety of demos.

| | Pink Funhouse CD (2008) Explicit
Breathe
$11.59 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that Pink has lost any of her chutzpah.
If anything, there's an increased sense of confidence and newfound liberation on tracks like the chest-thumping "So What" and the mischievous, bouncing "Bad Influence." In softer moments, like the ballad "I Don't Believe You" and the soulful "One Wrong Foot," Pink channels her personal experience into expressions that carry no less strength or muscle. But FUNHOUSE is a pop album first and foremost, and its catchy choruses, rollicking beats, and memorable vocal performances won't disappoint.

| | Ledisi Lost And Found CD (2007)
Breathe
$10.85 New Orleans-born, California-bred singer Ledisi released a couple of indie albums leading up to her big-label debut with LOST & FOUND, and the latter is where the world at large meets a talent both highly individual and slyly syncretic. While Ledisi is ostensibly a modern R&B singer, whose tunes bear touches of hip-hop in their production, her background in everything from showtunes to symphony halls peeks through. The jazzy inflections, show-stopping delivery, and old-school soul that catch you by surprise are part and parcel of what makes LOST & FOUND stand out among the contemporary R&B pack.
Personnel: Ledisi (vocals); Rahsaan Patterson (vocals); Brandon Fields (horns); Rex Rideout (keyboards, programming); Dwayne Smith, Melvin Davis, Nelson Braxton (bass guitar); Michael White (drums).
Recording information: Backroom, Oakland, CA.
| | Fugees Score CD (1996)
Breathe
$6.79 THE SCORE won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, and "Killing Me Softly" won a 1997 Grammy for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The album was also nominated for Album Of The Year.
On their second album, the Fugees utilize a couple of the mid-'90s trends in hip-hop--cinematic construct and references to Asian fighting techniques. But THE SCORE transcends much of the genre's recent output, because it's as much about musicality as it is about beats. In fact, deep beats often take a back seat to tense, noir grooves. More importantly, all three rappers--Haitian males, Wyclef and Pras, and New Jerseyite female, Lauryn Hill--swing hard, syncopating around the beats like jazz instrumentalists, making THE SCORE a complex and challenging listen.
THE SCORE also boasts some of the most intelligent, non-exclusionary rhymes in recent memory. Wyclef claims to "run through Crown Heights/Screaming out Mazel Tov" and Hill draws parallels between herself and both Nina Simone and Elliot Ness. Too politically astute and musically talented to fall into the ruts of rap cliches and dependence on overused samples, the Fugees are placing a significant, personalized stamp on the direction of hip-hop.
Recorded at The Booga Basement Studio, East Orange, New Jersey; The Crib and Quad Studios, New York, New York; Anchor Recording Studios, Kingston, Jamaica.
Fugees (Refugee Camp): Lauryn Hill, Prakazrel "Pras," Wyclef.
Producers include: Wyclef, Shawn King, Lauryn Hill, Salaam Remi, John Forte.
Additional personnel: Garfield "Gus" Parkinson (vocals); Red Alert, Ras Baraka (spoken vocals); Handel Tucker (keyboards); Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Sly Dunbar (drums, programming); John Forte (programming); Backspin (scratches); Forte, Omega, Diamond D, Pace 1, Young Zee, Ra Digga.
