| | Jamie Foxx Unpredictable CD Jamie Foxx Discography of CDs
(96 Customer Reviews)
This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Jamie Foxx's second release as a solo artist is his first since his Oscar-winning portrayal of Ray Charles in the 2004 film RAY. It is natural, then, that UNPREDICTABLE would be a much higher-profile affair than 1994's PEEP THIS. The production credits include top-currency names like Timbaland and Sean Garrett. And guest stars? Forget about it. Common, Ludacris, Twista, Snoop Dogg, and Mary J. Blige, just to name a few, make appearances and help boost Foxx's credibility as one of the most popular kids on the block.
Foxx's music falls firmly into the category of sultry, hip-hop-inflected R&B a la R. Kelly. And like Kels, Foxx too has a penchant for bedroom themes, as UNPREDICTABLE pulses with the rhythm of sex. His study of Ray Charles's bluesy, elastic vocal style holds him in good stead, though: Foxx has an authoritative delivery on both uptempo grooves ("Warm Bed") and slinky slow jams ("VIP"). While not exactly groundbreaking, the album--with its superior production, excellent guest spots, and Foxx's impressive performances--still comes off a winner.
Foxx's first dualdisc release includes tracks featuring Kanye West, Mary J. Blige, and Pharell, with producers including Mike City, Underdogs, Sean Garrett, Pharrell, and Timbaland.
Personnel: Jamie Foxx (vocals); Mary J. Blige (vocals); Common, Kanye West, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, The Game, Twista (rap vocals). NO FLASH IN THE PAN Jamie seems to be in it for the long haul and is good at all things he puts his mind to --- the t.v. shows, the comedy, the movies and now the music. But those of us who have been following him were just wondering when he was going to drop a CD. THIS IS IT. It is a keeper. Holla at your boy. It's good. It's real good. | | Notorious B I G Duets: The Final Chapter CD (2005)
Unpredictable
$16.05 It is difficult to overcome the suspicion that DUETS: THE FINAL CHAPTER, the Notorious B.I.G.'s second posthumous "studio" release, is a blatant case of opportunism. The late rapper's legend towers so hugely over the hip-hop landscape, and his name has taken on such iconic grandeur, that it's absurdly easy to cash in on his musical legacy. DUETS recycles unused Biggie material, looping it artfully along with performances by some of the finest MCs and vocalists in the hip-hop and R&B community. Since Biggie's parts are sometimes minimal, however, those looking for a disc full of new music from the late icon may be disappointed.
Still, the album is an affecting listen, which is largely due to the spectacular assembly of talent. With a roster that includes the likes of Missy Elliott, R. Kelly, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Eminem, Nas, Mary J. Blige, and Biggie's widow, Faith Evans, among many, many others, DUETS works nicely as a tribute and a testament to Biggie's influence on the evolution of hip-hop. As much a cultural artifact ...
| | Mary J Blige Breakthrough CD (2005)
Unpredictable
$10.49 The album's lead-off single, "Be Without You," a bittersweet slow jam, is representative of the album's themes, which focus on feelings of strength and weakness in love. But whether waxing romantic ("Can't Get Enough") or detailing the travails of the heart ("Baggage"), Blige ...
| | Anthony Hamilton Ain't Nobody Worrying CD (2005)
Unpredictable
$9.79 After the success of his 2003 album, COMIN' FROM WHERE I'M FROM, R&B/soul singer Anthony Hamilton followed up in earnest during 2005, first with a collection of previously unreleased tunes, SOULIFE, and then with another new studio record, AIN'T NOBODY WORRYIN'. This latter disc truly solidifies Hamilton's sterling reputation; it's an utterly confident outing that nods to 1970s soul music without being beholden to the style of that era. In fact, Hamilton's deft balancing of both vintage soul and contemporary production is what helps the expressive vocalist stand out in the crowd. Rather than calling up his R&B/rap peers for guest ...
| | Le Voyage: The Jean-Luc Ponty Anthology CDs (1996)
Unpredictable
$15.65 Ponty has worked with Frank Zappa and John McLaughlin, has provided brilliant violin work as a session player, and has had a terrific run as a bandleader. This two-disc set dips into Ponty's Atlantic Records releases, tracing the development of Ponty's particular brand of jazz fusion and providing a very nice look at his career as a bandleader. A few of the cuts seem a bit watery and thin, but this has more to do with the original recording and mixing than the performances or mastering -- Rhino's mastering department has provided the usual quality of production here. Jean-Luc Ponty is a notable performer in the jazz arena, one who has a clear vision and strong ideals when it comes to his music -- he likes to test his boundaries and explore new possibilities. A notable collection. ~ Steven McDonald

| | Silkk The Shocker Based On A True Story CD (2004)
Unpredictable
$9.49 When New Orleans label No Limit first hit the big time in the late 1990s, it was Silkk the Shocker who released the first major album (CHARGE IT 2 DA GAME) on the heels of founder Master P's multi-platinum breakthrough. When the company reemerged in 2004 with a Master P comeback, Silkk the Shocker again followed, this time with his fifth record (and his first in three years), BASED ON A TRUE STORY.
Always a distinctive vocalist, the Southern rapper improved his lyrical acuity by leaps and bounds during the hiatus. Over the span of his first four albums, Silkk reveled in all the usual trappings of gangsta rap, going gleefully over the top, more concerned with starting the party than with thoughtful lyrics. While BASED ON A TRUE STORY's themes stay true to the customary topics of girls, riches, prowess, and more girls (and, as it is on No Limit, basketball), "Why You Mad" and "We Don't Dance We Bounce" are practically introspective, rife with clever turns of phrase. However, that certainly is not to imply Silkk has forgotten how to throw a party, particularly on Petey Pablo-boasting single "We Like Them Girls." With BASED ON A TRUE STORY, Silkk the Shocker rises to new heights of his hip-hop skills.
There are two interesting things about Silkk the Shocker's fifth album, and that's more than usual. One is that it's been three years since his last album and he's grown when it comes to rapping. It's not by leaps and bounds, since he's still more a party chanter than a lyric dart thrower, but he pauses and asks questions and that's a relief from his old thug spitting. The second is how old-school No Limit the album is, recalling the label's heyday even with its slick recognition of Lil Jon's domination of the South, 2004. In its mix with Petey Pablo guesting, "We Like Them Girls" is the slamming, Lil Jon-inspired single and a solid jam for a weekend roll on 24s. The excellent Southern boot to the head "Playa Playa" is the album's other great track, ending a tight run of tunes with one speed bump. The creeping "Got It on Lock" with woop-woop synths segues into the ominous "We Don't Dance We Bounce" and the funkier "Just Do It" with great care, but when the Petey Pablo-less mix of "We Like Them Girls" follows five tracks after the single mix, you've got to wonder why the album gives up on the great flow. Producer Myke Diesel takes the Lil Jon sound to the underground on his many cuts and XL grabs the same bit of Spandau Ballet's "True" that P.M. Dawn did for the nice breather "Be There." If these sound like great strides to get some aboveground attention, Silkk's constant lyrical venom will keep him off ...
