Founding guitarist Larry Field left before this album was recorded, resulting in an emphasis on keyboardist Raul Matute and sax player Danny Hull. The result is, surprisingly, somewhat tighter playing by the band, with the horn section reined in to provide percussive punches on guitar- and keyboard-driven songs. The Escovedos drop in to provide Latin percussion on such funk monsters as "Down to the Bone," and the band sounds both confident and aggressive in the tightly wound rave-up of "All My Honey." Chad & Jeremy's first Columbia album was similar to their previous material (recorded for Ember in the U.K. and licensed by World Artists in the U.S.) in its light British Invasion pop/rock style with folky overtones. There wasn't anything here quite on the level of their previous big hits, "Yesterday's Gone" and "A Summer Song," though the orchestrated ballad "Before and After" would be their final Top 20 single. As a whole the album's a bit of a variety show, the pair proving modestly enjoyable to mediocre at a range of approaches on both originals and outside material. There's the nearly straight folk of "Fare Thee Well (I Must Be Gone)" and Gordon Lightfoot's "For Lovin' Me," more orchestrated pop/rock ballads ("I'm in Love Again," "Tell Me Baby," and a slightly inferior remake of "What Do You Want With Me," which they had already done for Ember), bouncy British Invasion pop ("Little Does She Know," "Say It Isn't True"), the Andy Williams hit "Can't Get Used to Losing You," and even a strained attempt at a British Invasion R&B rave-up ("Evil-Hearted You"). "Why Should I Care" is about the best of the original tunes, though at one point it blatantly rips off a riff from the Zombies' "She's Not There." Symphony X is certainly an anomaly: an '80s-style fantasy metal band who came along in 1994 (after Nirvana and Pearl Jam's success had seriously rearranged the rock landscape) and ended up acquiring a loyal Gen-X following (especially in Europe). In the '90s and 2000s -- a time when other young headbanger bands have embraced alternative metal and been influenced by punk, rap, and/or industrial -- Symphony X has maintained an unapologetically old-school outlook. And that old-school perspective remains on The Odyssey, which is a 2002 release but recalls the classic fantasy metal of '80s favorites like Queensrÿche, Yngwie Malmsteen, Ronnie James Dio, and Iron Maiden. Young Armenian born pianist Tigran Hamasyan is the next rising star in progressive and modern jazz piano, following paths of the bop innovator Bud Powell, post-Powell contemporary icon Chick Corea, and peer Eldar Djangirov.
