| | Donny Hathaway Collection CD (1990)
Tudo Azul music CDs
$8.05 Unfortunately, Atlantic's A Donny Hathaway Collection, one of the few career retrospectives available (and basically the only one in print), isn't quite definitive; it presents a version of Hathaway's career inordinately focused on his commercially successful duets with Roberta Flack, and his slowest, most dirge-like solo recordings. A few of his best up-tempo tracks are represented ("The Ghetto," his live cover of "What's Going On"), but not before haunted material like "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," and "Giving Up." Admittedly, his duets with Flack are among the best recordings of his career, ranging from the depressed ("Where Is the Love") to the atmospheric ("The Closer I Get to You") to the downright driving ("Back Together Again"). But A Donny Hathaway Collection neglects far too much material from his two greatest solo albums, 1970s Everything Is Everything and 1973's Extension of a Man, to be ...
| | Jeff Healey Songs From The Road CD (2009)
Tudo Azul songs
$13.05 Appearing almost 18 months after his death, Songs from the Road is the first posthumous disc from Jeff Healey. Collecting highlights from his 2006 performance at Norway's Nottoden Blues Festival, plus 2007 gigs in London and Toronto (the latter at his hometown club, the Jeff Healey Roadhouse), Songs from the Road paints a good portrait of Healey the road warrior, playing old favorites, both of his own and a wide variety of classic rock and blues artists, including Muddy Waters and two from the Beatles. Healey doesn't surprise here, either in repertoire or attack, but he does satisfy, both as a guitarist and an all-around entertainer, making this collection ...
| | Jan Garbarek Dresden: In Concert CDs (2009)
Tudo Azul album
$23.39 It's hard to believe that after recording as a leader for 40 years, DRESDEN: IN CONCERT is Jan Garbarek's first-ever live album. For those who think that Garbarek abandoned jazz some time ago, this will be a shock. DRESDEN is an engaged, kinetic, double-disc, two-hour performance of his quartet playing in the modern jazz idiom and using all of its tenets--from complex harmonics and rhythmic invention to extended lyric improvisation--to create a tour de force that honors all the music he holds dear. Garbarek plays tenor, soprano, and selje flute here, and is accompanied by his regular group that includes drummer Manu Katche, pianist/keyboadist Rainer Brüninghaus, and electric bassist Yuri ...

| | Johnny Hodges At Sportpalast, Berlin CDs (1961)
Tudo Azul music CDs
$16.59 This double-CD, a straight reissue of a Pablo double-LP, documents a fun set. Altoist Johnny Hodges and some fellow members of Duke Ellington's Orchestra (Ray Nance on cornet, violin and vocals, trombonist Lawrence Brown, baritonist Harry Carney, bassist Aaron Bell, drummer Sam Woodyard and guest pianist Al Williams) jam through a mostly typical set of standards and Ellington tunes. Everyone gets featured ...
| | Winning Combinations: Atlantic Starr/L.T.D. CDs (2000) Limited Edition
Tudo Azul songs
$5.99 As budget compilations come and go, there are so many that are easily dispensable and forgettable, taking their place on dusty racks in convenience stores and interstate rest stops across the nation. But this one isn't so bad. The combination of Atlantic Starr and L.T.D. -- two of the best soul ensembles of the late '70s and early '80s -- complement one another well, with each group offering up a sampling of their best works including Atlantic Starr's chart ...

| | Tommy Dorsey That Sentimental Gentleman CD (1996)
Tudo Azul music CDs
$12.15 That Sentimental Gentleman collects 25 performances recorded for NBC on remote broadcasts by Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra between 1940 and 1944, a period just after the prime years of the band. Though there aren't any true rarities here, the sound quality is good for the time and the performances are hot. Highlights include Buddy Rich's drum feature on "Hawaiian War Chant," Frank Sinatra's farewell to Dorsey (and the passing of the torch to Dick Haymes) with a September 1942 performance of "The Song Is You," and a feature for Bunny Berigan on "Hallelujah." ~ John Bush
Recorded between 1940 & 1944.
Personnel: Frank Sinatra, Sy Oliver, Sentimentalists ...

| | Joe Gordon Early Sessions CD (2005)
Tudo Azul album
$23.29 One of the top hard bop trumpeters to emerge during the 1950s, Joe Gordon was just 26 when he recorded the two sessions that are on this excellent reissue. The first eight numbers are from his debut as a leader, a quintet project from September 1954 that matches his boppish horn with tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse, pianist Junior Mance, bassist Jimmy Schneck, and drummer Art Blakey. The repertoire consists of two tunes by Gordon, three from Quincy Jones, and a trio of jazz standards. Gordon's only other set as a leader would be in 1961. The second half of this reissue is an Art Blakey pre-Jazz Messengers set comprised of seven songs by altoist Gigi Gryce and one Horace Silver tune. Gordon and Gryce blend together quite well while joined by pianist Walter Bishop, ...
