This two-CD sampler from the U.K. TV driving show is as much a snapshot of the intensely vital and varied nature of British pop and dance music as it is a soundtrack to choking on car fumes while stuck in city traffic--uh, speeding down the open highway with the wind streaming through your hair. U.S. garage rockers like the Killers rub shoulders with their Euro counterparts the Hives, while vintage Britpop bands like the Stone Roses and the Charlatans take on 21st-century upstarts like Keane, and prehistoric 1960s rockers Cream are dusted off and given a downtempo techno makeover.
The flagship BBC driving brand is stronger than ever, attracting record TV viewing audiences. The show uses plenty of music and not just dusty old rock anthems. Disc 1 delivers a more contemporary driving soundtrack (Bodyrockers, Razorlight, The Hives, Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, The Killers etc). Switch to Disc 2 and you'll find a more expansive and dramatic soundtrack; cue Rob D, David Holmes, The Orb, Nightmares On Wax and Lemon Jelly. This is an exciting concept for a driving album and sits comfortably in the back seat with the younger, more dynamic hip audience that regularly watches the show.

$19.98 When Jon Anderson rejoined Yes after DRAMA, he was inserting himself into an unusual situation. Keyboardist Geoff Downes and longtime guitarist Steve Howe had left to form Asia with prog rock vets John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music etc.) and Carl Palmer (ELP). Chris Squire and Alan White brought original Yes keysman Tony Kaye back and recruited vibrant young Australian guitarist/vocalist/composer Trevor Rabin. The quartet had already begun writing and recording, ...
| | Michael Buble Crazy Love CD (2009)
Top Gear - The Ultimate Driving Experience
$15.05 Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk the tune with burnished breath, eking out the drama line by line. It's over the top for sure, but Bublé takes you to the edge of the cliff, prepares to jump, and then gives you a knowing wink that says, not quite yet -- there's more fun to be had. And what fun it is with Bublé swinging through "All of ...

| | Atlas Sound Logos CD (2009)
Top Gear - The Ultimate Driving Experience
$11.64 Bradford Cox was a virtual song machine during the time between Deerhunter's CRYPTOGRAMS and the Atlas Sound's LOGOS, churning out officially released material as well as plenty of songs only available on his blog. Over that span of time, he became a finer and more fluid songwriter, and his music emerged from the experimental fog of his earlier work just enough to give listeners tantalizing glimpses of almost ridiculously catchy songs. LOGOS keeps this push-pull between challenging and charming, yet Cox's second solo album still feels more experimental than Deerhunter, if only because he seems completely unfettered by any kind of rules or concerns about consistency. These songs barely sound like each other, yet they all sound like Cox. LOGOS comes into focus slowly with its first three songs. "The Light That Failed"'s hazy atmospheres slip effortlessly into "An Orchid"'s spectral recall of MICROCASTLE's psych-pop, but it's "Walkabout," ...

Top Gear - The Ultimate Driving Experience
$13.14 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on ...
