Although progressive rock reached its commercial peak in the '70s, it didn't disappear after the '70s -- and when the mid-2000s arrived, prog rock continued to enjoy an enthusiastic cult following. The prog rock experience of the 21st century not only included listening to familiar '70s recordings by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis, and King Crimson -- it also meant being hip to the younger prog bands that surfaced in the '90s and 2000s. And some of those younger bands favor a heavy metal/progressive rock blend, which is what Age of Nemesis does on Psychogeist. This Hungarian outfit, which was formed in 1997, certainly isn't the only band that has combined old-school metal and prog rock in the '90s and 2000s -- there are many others, but Age of Nemesis does it more skillfully than most. And they do it with a variety of '70s and '80s influences that range from Rush, ELP, and Yes to Ronnie James Dio, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Iron Maiden, and Dream Theater. Psychogeist isn't groundbreaking or terribly original, but it is nicely crafted, extremely listenable, and quite focused. Age of Nemesis is a highly melodic band, and their melodies are consistently appealing on this early 2006 release. Thankfully, lead singer Zoltan Kiss has no problem expressing himself in perfect English; he is never hard to understand, and much of the time, he sounds like he grew up in a country where English -- not Hungarian -- is the primary language. Fans of metal/prog rock fusion will find a lot to enjoy about this pleasing, if derivative, effort. ~ Alex Henderson

Psychogeist album
$9.25 The fourth album by Symphorce, 2004's Twice Second, is the culmination of ideas first explored in the German quintet's previous releases. Unlike the majority of their countrymen working in this style, Symphorce have little interest in Scandinavian style death metal; instead, their clear antecedents are Queensr˙che's progressive tendencies and Iron Maiden's skill at adding the occasional pop hook into their music without ever coming ...
| | Dio Master Of The Moon CD (2004)
Psychogeist CD music
$9.99 There's something about a post-millennium album cover that features a giant blue-horned minion of Satan in pre-pounce with an illuminated crystal ball in its leathery hand that simply warms the soul, and the fact that it adorns a record called Master of the Moon can mean only one thing: Dio. Unlike many in the aging metal community, Ronnie James Dio still possesses the same powerful voice that fueled the genre through its late-'70s and '80s heydays, and the reigning dark prince of Elfdom and two-time Black Sabbath frontman is still capable of writing a killer song or two. MOTM resembles earlier works like Last in Line and Sacred Heart in its ability to buffer those one or two great tracks with seven or eight forgettable ones. Luckily, it's the first one out of the gate, "One More for the Road," that packs the biggest wallop. Similar in attack to classics like "We Rock" and "Stand Up and Shout," it sets a breakneck pace for a record that gives up just minutes after the firing of the start gun. What follows is a series of midtempo rockers outfitted with RJD's generic fantasy lyrics about dreams, evil, and being "stronger ...

Psychogeist CD music
$15.79 Sweden's Therion have been lauded the world over, just about, for their wildly influential and experimental symphonic heavy metal; it incorporates not only classical ambitions and arrangements, but the integration of European folk and even industrial elementals into their sound. Add to this guitarist, songwriter and conceptualist Christofer Johnsson and (non)performing scholar/lyricist Thomas Karlsson's collective studied knowledge of myths, arcane occult knowledge, and folklore from around the globe (East of the Atlantic anyway) and you have ...

| | Keali'I Reichel Kawaipunahele CD (1994) Bonus Track; Japan
Psychogeist album
$35.85 This album by Hawaiian singer-songwriter Kealii Reichel features 13 tracks.
After being discovered at a karaoke competition in the mid-90s, Keali'i Reichel rose quickly to the highest pinnacles of Hawaiian superstardom. His first album, Kawaipunahele, is already a Hawaiian classic. Locals from Honolulu to Kaunakakai own a copy of the album, radio stations play the songs incessantly, and any tourist who sets foot in a music store is likely to walk out with the CD. Reichel goes for the tried-and-true formula: mellow songs, tropical island stylings and sweet, piping Hawaiian vocal tones. A lot of these songs are reminiscent of former Top 40 hits from the mainland, but only a few of them are actually covers. A couple of notable cover tunes are "In My Life," a Beatles tune which has had a Hawaiian verse added, and "If We Hold On Together," which is performed as a duet with Lorna Lim. Most of the songs have Hawaiian lyrics that are completely unintelligible, but it really doesn't matter. They all talk about the same things: romance, friendship, and the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands. It's nearly impossible to find this album offensive or intrusive. The lyrics are strictly PG-rated, the music is pretty, and the tone remains even-keel throughout. Like as not, that is why the album has become one of the `must-have' albums for visitors to Hawaii. ~ L. Katz
