| | Frankie Laine Rockin'/Hell Bent For Leather CD (1957)
Love Cook music CDs
$11.59 Also available as part of the 2-CD Collectables box THE LEGEND AT HIS BEST!
ROCKIN' originally released on Columbia (975). HELL BENT FOR LEATHER originally released on Columbia (8415). Includes reissue liner notes by Mark Marymont.
In the late 1950s the music industry was sweeping away the old styles of music to accommodate the growing trend towards pop and rock & roll. Few of the older generation of singers managed to survive. Frankie Laine, however, was finding his star on the ascent with a sound quite different from his beginnings in the 1930s. His manly voice, always youthfully dynamic, has a dash and rhythm that rocks and rolls.
As much and as easily as Laine reflected the new sounds of the '50s and '60s, ROCKIN' is really a selection of pre-rock tunes, vibrantly delivered with updated panache. Laine's rousing rendition of "Sunny Side of the Street" certainly makes this standard jump. HELL BENT FOR LEATHER showcases Laine capitalizing on rock's Nashville roots with his Elvis Presley-like stylings of C&W themed pop songs. "Rawhide," with its ...
| | Sonny Rollins Volume 2 CD (1957) Remastered
Love Cook songs
$10.15 The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of VOLUME 2 includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal.
This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
Sonny Rollins' VOLUME 2 for Blue Note is one of those timeless discs. It is a milestone in jazz history that gathered together some of the founding fathers of the post-bop era. Joining Rollins are Jazz Messengers Art Blakey (drums) and Horace Silver (piano), Miles Davis' favorite bassist Paul Chambers, the quintessential trombonist J. J. Johnson and even Thelonious Monk himself. This is a swinging tour-de-force that begins with a bang and doesn't let up until the last note has faded away.
Sonny's own up-tempo "Why Don't I" kicks off the session with a rhythmic jolt before Rollins' big tenor launches into a classic swinging solo followed by turns by Johnson, Silver and some heated exchanges with Blakey. The aptly titled "Wail March" deceptively begins with a street beat groove before careening into several blistering solo choruses. Monk sits in for his own "Misterioso" and "Reflections," two quintessential works from this eccentric master that are given excellent readings here. The bouncing "You Stepped Out Of A Dream" provides some tasty interaction between Rollins and Johnson. Finally, the lilting "Poor Butterfly" is a nice bluesy ending to this all-star session.
Digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder.
