MORE JOY, LESS SHAME contains live, remixed or alternate versions of material from DILATE and ANI DIFRANCO. When Ani DiFranco's seventh album, DILATE, came out in 1996, some longtime admirers of the singer/songwriter were puzzled by one track, a trip-hop-inspired, beat-heavy keyboard rendition of "Amazing Grace." In what some saw as a deliberate tweaking of the expectations of folk traditionalists, DiFranco quickly released the MORE JOY, LESS SHAME remix EP. DILATE's wonderful "Joyful Girl" is the disc's centerpiece track. With the help of a sampler and the coolly funky bass of ex-Gang of Four member Sara Lee, DiFranco turns the piece into the dancefloor-ready "Joyful Girl (Danger and Uncertainty Mix)" and into two trippier versions ("Joyful Girl (Peace and Love Mix)" and "Joyful Girl (Peace and Love Extended Mix)"). The song adapts brilliantly to new surroundings, as exemplified by the even more astonishing live version recorded with Doc Severinson and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.
