On this collection of trio recordings, the Idaho alto saxophonist and disciple of Lee Konitz performs his own re-imaginings of a variety of standards, including John Coltrane's "Giant Steps," Thelonious Monk's "Bemsha Swing" and "Well You Needn't," and Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is the Ocean."
For his fourth recording on Origin, Brent Jensen takes a cue from his old mentor Lee Konitz and explores the intimate world of the trio. Here he combines with two rhythm sections of long-time collaborators: guitarist Jamie Findlay and bassist Zac Matthew

Trios album
$13.09 Educator, clinician, and A-one alto sax player, Brent Jensen honors one of the most self-effacing musicians in the history of jazz, Paul Desmond. The title comes from Desmond's ambition to "sound like a dry martini," probably very light on the vermouth. There are many "Desmond-isms" that he liked to use to describe his work. On the secret to his unique tone, he said "I honestly don't know! It has something to do with the fact that I play illegally." Desmond admired Charlie Parker's playing, as well as the new paths he blazed. But he was determined to do his own thing. The result was a style and tone that were light, fluid, subtlety swinging, and expressive. This sense of artistry is captured by Jensen as he plays a set of tunes that Desmond either played as a member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, such as "Tangerine" and "Alice in Wonderland," or played in other settings, such as "Out of Nowhere." A couple of Desmond originals are on the program, including "Take Five," which has become a jazz staple. Playing Jim Hall to Jensen's Desmond is guitarist Jamie Findlay, recalling those classic albums they made together between 1959 ...
| | Allen Eager In The Land Of Oo-Bla-Dee, 1947-1953 CD (2003)
Trios CD music
$15.15 Recorded between 1947 & 1953. Includes liner notes by Robert E. Sunenblick and Ira Gitler.
In the Land of Oo-Bla-Dee is a fine collection of rarities from the obscure and underrated tenor saxophonist Allen Eager. Eager had a wild career that began with him recording for Savoy in the '40s and later found him dropping out with Timothy Leary and jamming with the Mothers of Invention. This disc features Eager's always swinging sound in a variety of settings. First off are three tracks recorded in 1953 at the Hi Hat in Boston featuring Symphony Sid as the MC. Next is a very lo-fi version of Eager's own high-charged original composition "Some Blues" recorded in 1949 for CBS's Adventures in Jazz program. The song has some typically loud drumming from Buddy Rich that can't obscure Eager's fine soloing. Next up are tracks recorded at what sound like impromptu jam sessions at photographer Milton Greene's studio in 1947. ...

| | Jimmy Raney Featuring Bob Brookmeyer CD (1956) Remastered
Trios album
$10.05 Assisted by the trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, the post-bop guitarist Jimmy Raney is heard here in a 1956 session performing a varied set that displays his lyrical, often cerebral playing to its best advantage, including the standards "How Long Has This Been Going On?" and "Isn't It Romantic."
Though Jimmy Raney recorded under his own name as early as 1953, it's this 1956 set that is regarded as his arrival as a leader. Raney is as fine an arranger as he is a guitarist. These eight tracks with Bob Brookmeyer on trombone -- another fine arranger in a soloist's role -- shine with the ease and fluidity of the best of the cool sessions recorded at the dawn of hard bop. One of the finest examples of the interplay between Raney and Brookmeyer occurs at the beginning of the album's second track, "How Long Has This Been Goin' On," where the pair engage in a brief contrapuntal dialogue before Brookmeyer solos on the melody and Raney fills the space behind him gently by whispering his chords and fills through the trombonist's phrasing before taking his own solo and slipping an inverted harmonic pattern ...

| | Michel Wintsch Sharing The Thirst CD (2001)
Trios album
$14.19 The second Leo Records CD by the Swiss composer/pianist Michel Wintsch features Gerry Hemingway, Banz Oester, Marie Schwab & Natalie Saudan. The album was recorded after a long tour of Belgium, Germany, Poland & the Czech Republic. It's a fusion of a mal
Pianist/composer Michel Wintsch's music is jazz-based but heavily influenced by elements of contemporary European-derived art music. The band's unusual instrumentation reflects this most directly; the front line is comprised of a violinist and a violist. The presence of one or the other is unusual enough, but for a jazz ensemble to use both is well-nigh unprecedented. By the record's second cut, it's clear that the peculiar lineup is a natural outgrowth of Wintsch's conception. The track, "Painter Mikailov," is built on a gentle bass ostinato, over which the two string players etch a deceptively simple and mildly convoluted melody in unison and two-part ...
