After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. Dear Friends,Welcome to Wind Under Wood world.I’m not sure what you might like to know about this album, but here is what I recall about recording it:Most importantly, it came to life in a magical place—James Blennerhassett’s studio in Ballyfarnon, County Roscommon, Ireland which overlooks rolling green mountains; cows and sheep; Monet-style haystacks; and Lough Skean hidden in the valley below. The album’s autumnal ambience was sown by recording during the full moon in the months of September and October. The showery-sunny weather gave us at least one rainbow everyday, and on the final day, I counted no fewer than seven.Because it was already quite chilly outside, James kept the studio warming lights on so my fingers wouldn’t freeze and I drank mugfuls of vegetable soup. Immune to the cold, James returned refreshed each morning having spent the night aboard his boat on the Shannon River. Jake, James’ beagle, kept us company until becoming bored, when he would wander off to the next village’s pub for a pint.When I wasn’t playing, I went walking in my wellies to Turlough O’Carolan’s over-grown grave; down into the nearby Arigna Coal Mine; and around the ruins of Kilronan Castle on the shore of Lough Meelagh, where I collected green-puff-emitting mushrooms. I also visited the Kilronan Abbey well where I performed the cure for back trouble (caused by bending over a guitar too long) which consisted of crawling under a low-lying rock and circling the well clockwise three times.For guitar aficionados, I played a Goodall 6-string guitar (from Hawaii), a Gibson J-180 6-string (from Montana), a Freshwater mando-cello (from Scotland), and a Deering banjo-guitar (from California.) James played everything under the sun including electric guitar, keyboards, recorder and the priceless double bass passed down from his grandfather. All the songs were recorded in one go, complete with creaking chairs and rattling strings, with no drop-ins to alter the authenticity ...
