The second effort from British avant-dance ensemble Up, Bustle and Out in collaboration with Cuban composer and multi-instrumentalist Richard Eges is another dreamy, complex, and sometimes befuddling mishmash of son, acid jazz, funk, and sneaky elements of electronica and drum'n'bass. Recorded at Sonocaribe Studio in Havana, the album features contributions from a huge host of guest musicians, and veers from slow and steamy jazz outings, like "Mariel Port, Spanish Town" (featuring bassist Jim Barr of Portishead), to the reggae-influenced "Sane Men Surround" (featuring a poem by Graham Greene) and the gently jungly "Jazz Sepulchre" (featuring, appropriately enough, a tantalizingly brief Charlie Parker sample). But the most satisfying numbers are those that draw most deeply on Cuban sources, specifically "Descarga Caramelo" and the penny whistle-driven "Picazon," both of them prominently featuring massed men's voices and relatively straightforward Cuban rhythms. [A U.S. version of the CD was also released.] ~ Rick Anderson
This is the second in the series of the Master Sessions from UB&O, two albums which were recorded in both their hometown of Bristol and their spiritual home of Cuba. The project integrates music, literature and film into one compelling intrigue. The project was co-written by, the man who forms the roots to popular Cuban music. He is Cuba's number 1 flautist and orchestrator, and recently he played on the successful 'Rubn Gonzlez' and 'Buena Vista Social Club' albums. Born in Cruces, Las Villas province in 1926, Richard Eges moved to Santa Clara at an early age. 'My house was 'la Casa de la Msica. My father was an integral part of the old school directing many bands. Our heads were completely submersed in music. Through his discipline, I studied and learnt a quantity of instruments such as the piano, flute, trumpet, double bass and lots of percussion.'
