| | Dead 60S CD Dead 60s Discography of CDs
Although the Dead 60s seem intent--in name and in approach--on burying the decade that belonged to fellow Liverpudlians the Beatles, they turn to another decade and style for inspiration: the punk and post-punk of the 1970s. Edgy, intense, and ... Full Descriptiondeeply indebted to ska, dub, and the reggae-punk amalgams pioneered by bands like the Clash, the Jam, and the Specials, the Dead 60s bring their own flavor to the revival-mad 2000s. While peers mine early '80s dance beats and slicing, Gang of Four-style guitars (though there is fair bit of that here too), the Dead '60s turn to the political and musical twin subcultures of '70s England.
The band's rhythmic architecture is spot on: drums keep tight, in-the-pocket rhythms ticking behind loose, bouncing bass, and chk-chking guitars on the two and four. The instrumental formula is straight from Kingston, but the overall energy and passionate, accent-inflected singing is straight British punk. The album favors dub-style tempos ("Control This;" "We Get Low"), but there are also moments of downright danceability, such as "Red Light," which comes complete with a bobbling bass line and a handclap track. The choice of source material is understandable: this was a great sound, and the Dead '60s resuscitate it with talent and conviction.
The Dead 60s: Matt McManamon (vocals, guitar); Ben Gordon (guitar, organ); Charlie Turner (bass guitar); Bryan Johnson (drums).
Recording information: The Ranch, Liverpool, England.
Uncut (p.89) - 3 stars out of 5 - "The Dead 60s deliver a blast of spiky intent on their debut album." CMJ (No. 914, p.4) - "Inspired by dub, reggae and the skittish ska bounce of the Specials, these four rocking boys from Liverpool not only sound like the Clash, but wax political....on this raw, self-titled debut..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.118) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[T]he siren-sounds of 'Red Light' stay on the acceptable side of parody, while 'Loaded Gun' and 'Nowhere' wear their riot-era enervation well." Dead 60S album
$6.39 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room.
Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica and vocals are utterly idiomatic, without a hint of minstrelsy. Michael Bloomfield's lead guitar is stinging and eloquent, and the rhythm section, on loan from Howling Wolf, swings like mad. The only fly in the ointment is the fairly primitive production, ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Dead 60S CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance on a finale of the ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Dead 60S music CDs
$12.05 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they embraced THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. And most importantly, unreconstructed Southern rockers of the boogie-and-beer variety will appreciate the fact that this is an unapologetic, non-ironic valentine to the sound of not only Skynyrd, but the Allman Brothers, ...
| | Keane Hopes & Fears CD (2004)
Dead 60S songs
$11.59 Often compared to countrymen Coldplay and Radiohead, the UK-based trio Keane plays a similarly majestic, sweeping blend of pop-informed rock music. Fueling the comparisons is the fact that lead vocalist Tom Chaplin makes heavy use of the same kind of Jeff Buckley-esque falsetto and emotion-filled wails favored by Chris Martin and Thom Yorke. On HOPES AND FEARS's epic tracks such as "She Has No Time," however, Keane takes the more dramatic elements of the aforementioned bands' sounds and magnifies them, creating piano- and synthesizer-driven cinematic soundscapes ...
| | Kaiser Chiefs Employment CD (2005)
Dead 60S album
$8.65 Emerging in an era rife with New Wave rip-off artists, the Kaiser Chiefs ran the risk of their sharp suits, angular haircuts, and early-1980s influences being taken the wrong way. While many of their peers shamelessly aped the most obvious aspects of the Cure, New Order, et al, Kaiser Chiefs (the name comes from a South African soccer team) much more subtly incorporated the sensibilities of their influences. Though one can hear traces of everything from Madness to XTC and Adam & the Ants on the Chiefs 2005 debut album, EMPLOYMENT, these Brits are no one's slavish imitators. Their undeniably catchy melodies, ...
| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
Dead 60S CD music
$8.55 Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful drumming. Each song is based around memorable vocal hooks and sensitive lyrical content.
Many tracks on CATCH WITHOUT ARMS have a searching quality to them. Despite the sheer force of the music, this release is ultimately marked by well constructed melodies and intriguing harmonic underpinnings. This is due in part to singer Gavin Hayes, who sounds more like U2's Bono than a ...
