When high school jock Troy and class brainiac Gabrielle meet cute auditioning for roles in the school musical, they upset the expectations of their friends and earn the jealousy of the school's two top performing talents. The soundtrack to Disney's enjoyable 2006 original movie (the Disney Channel's first venture into musicals) features stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Anne Hudgens in duets and solo settings, as well as winning performances from supporting cast members Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel. Songs range from the hip-hop style "Get'Cha Head in the Game" to the dreamy "When There Was Me and You," and there are also karaoke versions of the musical's two romantic duets, "Start of Something New" and "Breaking Free." Quite simply, Rocky IV was a movie for the ages. The story of a man who had it all, only to lose so much overnight. Revolving around tension and alienation on the personal, political, spiritual and athletic levels, Sylvester Stallone's portrayal of Rocky Balboa in Rocky IV was without question the most multi-dimensional role of his career. This isn't to shirk the original Rocky, which dealt with questions of class, ethnicity, and overcoming obstacles to victory -- but Rocky IV was more of a movie to be related to on a universal scale.
This indomitable spirit is best exemplified by the album's lead-off track "Burning Heart". The logical sequel to Survivor's epic, instantly recognizable and painfully unforgettable sports anthem "Eye of the Tiger" finds the central protagonist a bit more mature and refined; world-weary from his battles and exponentially more introspective than he was in his burning youth. Like the album itself, the soundtrack to the 1978 film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is a legend in its own right. Where the Beatles' album was a groundbreaking moment in pop music, the Robert Stigwood film was an unmitigated disaster, an embarrassment not only to the Beatles, but to everyone involved in the production. Nevertheless, as the years passed and '70s nostalgia grew, certain kitsch fanatics revealed an affection for the debacle, so it wasn't a complete surprise that the album was reissued on CD for its 20th anniversary. A reissue, however, doesn't validate this music, not by any stretch of the imagination. A few performers try to give their best -- witness Earth, Wind & Fire's "Got to Get You into My Life," Aerosmith's "Come Together," and Billy Preston's "Get Back" -- but there's no erasing the fact that this is an absolutely atrocious record, one that was simply beyond saving.
