As one of the original members of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze certainly blazed some important trails on the virgin terrain of early-1970s electronic music--trails that would grow wide enough to accommodate millions of travelers throughout the '80s, '90s, 2000s, and beyond, and encompass everything from New Age and ambient music to drone and chill-out techno. The same commitment to innovation marks Schulze's solo discography, from which 1976's MOONDAWN emerges as one of the highlights.
Comprising two long compositions ("Floating" and "Mindphaser"), MOONDAWN is vintage, ambient space music generated by various analog synthesizers (foremost of which is the Moog, the key instrument Schulze used to sculpt his signature sound). Not only is MOONDAWN an important document in the early chapters of electronica, but it stands up remarkably well beside the countless albums it helped inspire.
Recorded at Studio P-anne-Paulsen, Frankfurt, Germany.
Personnel: Klaus Schulze (organ, keyboards, synthesizer); Haraold Grobkopf (drums).

Moondawn album
$17.75 Digitally remastered edtion of 'In Blue' that was originally released in 1995 as a double CD. For this disc, Schulze invited his old friend Manuel Gottsching (Ash Ra Tempel) to play his beautiful guitar on one of the long tracks. When "In Blue" was released, many fans thought that this was the most typical Schulze record for a long time. This special deluxe edition 3CD set is housed in a stylish digipak with a deluxe booklet, including new liner notes and photos. The third disc is a bonus CD with 53 minutes of additional Klaus Schulze music, previoiusly released.
In Blue is a double CD from the great Klaus Schulze. This set has almost 160 minutes of pure "Klaustrophobia." That means that these three long-form compositions are full of sequences, dense atmospheres, and drawn-out synth washes. Schulze invited Manuel Göttsching, his former Ash Ra Tempel partner, to play guitar ...

$15.39 A founding member of such notable Krautrock ensembles as Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, and Cosmic Jokers, Klaus Schulze is genuinely deserving of the oft-assigned "father of modern electronic music" title. The drummer-turned-master-of-a-million-synthesizers did not remain with any single unit for very long. Instead, Schulze embarked on a bewilderingly prolific solo career that seeded the fertile paths of new age, ambient, trance, and techno music.
1972's IRRLICHT is where it all begins. Over three lengthy tracks, saturnine string motifs are pitted against surging drone and sheeting downpours of synthetic organ. It's a dense, often blisteringly dissonant clash of orchestral crescendos and synthesizer swells with little in the way of conventional melody, but texture and tonal complexity to burn. "Satz Ebene" sounds like one of Bach's magisterial pipe-organ works performed on a distant planet's barren surface. "Satz Gewitter" is a harrowing coda fortified with sci-fi sonics. The contemplative "Satz Exil Sils Maria" encroaches like a lunar dusk as Schulze slowly draws a curtain of cosmic shadow over the event horizon.
Klaus Schulze's solo debut is a masterful album featuring some of the most majestic instances of space music ever recorded, all the more remarkable for being recorded ...

Moondawn CD music
$17.15 Dedicated to Richard Wagner, Timewind is a 60-minute electronic expedition that is broken up into two half-hour tracks, "Bayreuth Return" and "Wahnfried 1883." The first 30 minutes involves icy pulsations and lengthy tonal flights that unnoticeably converge into each other. While one rhythm gains momentum, the other one slowly fades into a bubbly electronic bath of bright swirls and meandering keyboard waves. Similar to early Tangerine Dream, the music here rises and falls above a distant sonic horizon, and the effect is truly mesmerizing. One specific flow can last for minutes, while small, detailed noises adhere themselves to the main electronic run. On the second track, more of the same far-off synthesized altering takes place, but the washes of keyboard become inoculated with a sharper, more precise sound. Longer notes build into resilient pieces with the same comforting result. This album will sketch a barren wasteland in the mind through the wispiness of the wind-like effects. Timewind serves as splendid mood music, and the ears are forever kept busy following Schulze's electronic wandering. ~ Mike DeGagne

$13.25 | | Half-Handed Cloud Learning About Your Scale CD (2001)
Moondawn music CDs
$12.65 Including 25 songs in 24 minutes used to be the hallmark of intentionally primitive punk albums but, with Learning About Your Scale, Knoxville's Half-Handed Cloud (essentially John Ringhofer with help from various friends) uses the allotted time wisely to craft fully formed, even elaborate pop. Scale would sound like a single continuous piece if Ringhofer had more of an attention span, but he tires quickly of sounds -- a little moog here, a little tuba there, or maybe French horn and rubber band. He does, however, create miniature song cycles within the larger context of the album, complete with phoned-in supporting character dialogue. These mini-plays, which include "Those People We Made? We Love 'Em!" and "Sooty Insides Need Your Cleanliness," together with the broad instrumental palette, make Scale appear bristling with ideas and enthusiasm -- almost Baroque despite its brevity. Shifting gears with hyperactive exuberance, moving from Beach Boys-inspired harmonies to the folkier side of T. Rex, Scale can be a jarring listening experience, but it demands attention (forget about doing anything else but listening while this is on) and can be just as exhilarating as it is disorienting. Overall, Ringhofer's project recalls similar lo-fi, psychedelically-informed one-man acts such as Athens' Music Tapes or Washington's Microphones. But the most obvious influence is New Jersey's Danielson Famile, whose Sounds Familyre label released Scale. Like Danielson, Half-Handed Cloud's lyrical content is laden ...
