$25.79 Eyeliner-heavy, German teen pop quartet Tokio Hotel's third (and second English language) full-length is a significantly louder and considerably darker affair than previous outings. While there's little doubt that screaming teenage girls will still stand front and center at the foot of the stage, this time around the band has set its sights on the "First Person Shooter" male demographic, baiting the hook with enough generic sci-fi imagery and Depeche Mode-meets-Fall Out Boy melodrama to fuel one hundred angry bike rides home from work. That's not to say that the results aren't effective. HUMANOID, as predictable and generally harmless as it is, is immaculately crafted thanks in part to longtime producer David Jost and a handful of A-list engineers. Between the Auto-Tune heavy first single "Automatic" and the Arcade Fire-lite stadium anthem "World Behind My Wall," one can almost envision the elaborate stage show being planned for the next MTV video music awards. And while Tokio Hotel may ...
| | Yes 90125 CD (1983) Gold
Schrei songs
$20.29 When Jon Anderson rejoined Yes after DRAMA, he was inserting himself into an unusual situation. Keyboardist Geoff Downes and longtime guitarist Steve Howe had left to form Asia with prog rock vets John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music etc.) and Carl Palmer (ELP). Chris Squire and Alan White brought original Yes keysman Tony Kaye back and recruited vibrant young Australian guitarist/vocalist/composer Trevor Rabin. The quartet had already begun writing and recording, but Anderson was able to insert himself into the proceedings with such ease that the new combination sounds completely natural on 90125.
Mostly, the band was concerned with trimming the musical fat to keep pace with the onslaught of the 1980s. Thus, tracks like "Owner of a Lonely Heart" and "City of Love" are full of samples, splices and ...
| | Vampire Weekend Contra CD (2010)
Schrei album
$11.98 The scholarly Upper West Side Soweto of Vampire Weekend's debut sounded self-assured, but on Contra, they step out of their ivory tower with just as much confidence. In all senses of the term, this is a sophomore album. The band still flaunts the collegiate sense of discovery that made Vampire Weekend charming -- and sometimes too precious -- but with more maturity and creativity. Another Discovery is just as much of a force on Contra as any of the band's much-noted influences (Afro-pop, Paul Simon's Graceland): Rostam Batmanglij's electro-hip-hop-pop project with Ra Ra Riot's Wes Miles, which released its album LP after the pair found acclaim with their day jobs. While Vampire Weekend aren't as shiny and sugary as Discovery, some of that adventurousness rubbed off on Batmanglij's Contra production, which plays to the band's biggest strength: inspired juxtaposition. The album's artwork, which pairs a blonde WASP princess in a popped-collar polo shirt with the term given to Nicaraguan rebels, hints at the flair with which Vampire Weekend play mix-and-match on Contra. They throw listeners into the deep end with "Horchata," which features a four-on-the-floor beat, thumb piano, rubbery synth bass, and massed harmonies -- almost everything except the spry guitars that helped define ...
| | Berlin All The Way In CDs (2009) With DVD
Schrei CD music
$15.79 At times, it was hard to figure out whether Berlin were an average synth pop band trying to carve out their own niche or just a mediocre rock band jumping on the new wave bandwagon. Sure, they had some good singles and radio hits, but as an album band, they left a lot to be desired. Terri Nunn was beautiful and sexy, but it seemed like Berlin wanted to be more than just a commercial band with a hot vocalist: they seemed to be striving for greatness but settled for "that'll do." Unfortunately, they never had a chance to really prove themselves, breaking up after their commercially disappointing Count Three & Pray album, released in 1986. Nunn has kept the Berlin name alive over the years, touring with a different group of musicians and playing all the hits while releasing the occasional studio or live album. With a recorded output that seems to dwindle in quality with every release, one might hope that All the Way In would deviate from the standard "live hits" collection and offer up something really special. Sadly, that's not entirely the case. All the Way In was recorded live at The House of Blues in Anaheim, CA. The HOB is located very near the heart of the OC music scene, where Berlin started more than two decades ago. This homecoming show promised much but delivered very little.
Backed by three musicians who look like Nine Inch Nails refugees, Nunn is still as beautiful and sexy as ever, and her voice sounds great, but there doesn't seem to be much heart and soul, at least on the CD. Nunn pulls out all the live rock clichés she can muster while performing the big hits, dulling their overall impact. She then throws in covers of "Somebody to Love" (Jefferson ...
| | Impressions People Get Ready CD (1965) Japan
Schrei music CDs
$32.75 As with the previous year's Keep on Pushing, People Get Ready featured another big Curtis Mayfield hit, one that made as strong an impact on the civil-rights movement as on the charts. One of the most beautiful songs of the '60s, "People Get Ready" set the oft-used "gospel train" as its theme, with Mayfield speaking of faith for the present and deliverance in the future, while Sam Gooden and Fred Cash contributed beautiful harmony vocals (and a few lines of their own). That career touchstone aside, the rest of the material on the LP wasn't as strong as Keep on Pushing or the Impressions' marvelous debut. The two winners were "Woman's Got Soul" and "You ...

| | Josh Funk Jukebox Envy CD (2004)
Schrei CD music
$8.55 His sometimes satirical and unashamedly heartfelt lyrics draw the picture of who he is and where he is going. Hailing from Chico, CA, Josh Funk started writing songs as soon as he figured out his first three chords and by the age of 15 was already winning city songwriting competitions against people twice his age. "I never thought through what I was doing when I was a kid. I just started writing songs and that's still what I do today. Now looking back on it, I feel blessed for my naivety, and wish I had more of it."By the time he was 17, Josh started to build a small following when he was given his own night at a coffee shop called the Daily Grind. "I played there for about five months, and in a way my songwriting grew up then. At first only a couple of friends showed up to watch me but by the end, the place was standing room only. This was soon followed by his first solo effort in 2000 with the release of "The Outlet Disadvantage" followed in 2004 by his 6 song EP "A Jukebox Envy."One particular song "Supermodel" caught notice of L.A. producer Rob Beaton (Buckethead, Adam Cohen, Budapest Symphony Orchestra) who brought Josh down to track "So Glad You Could Make It" which would end up being released on the Swinghouse Records compilation of up and coming alternative artists to watch out for.2007 will ...
