| | Hard To Find 45S, Vol. 12: 60S And 70S Pop Classics CD (2010)
Schrei music CDs
$13.14 The 19 singles collected on this set of 1960s and 1970s pop hits are hardly heavy or experimental, but are designed instead for comfortable appeal, and each, in its own way, freezes its era perhaps more clearly than the more artistic and exploratory work that went on in the recording studios of the day -- no doubt because these songs were heard constantly on the radio. Like them or not, there are some serious ear worms here, like Wayne Fontana & the Mindbenders' "Game of Love," Jay & the Techniques' Motown-like "Apple, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie," the Sandpipers' wistful "Come Saturday Morning," the group Smith's toughened-up version of the Shirelles' "Baby It's You," King Harvest's "Dancing in the Moonlight," and Andy Gibb's "I Just Want to Be Your Everything," and each of these is likely to get one singing along, like it or not. Some songs we love. Some songs love us. These are examples of the latter. They worm their way in there. They don't let go easily. ~ Steve Leggett

| | John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band Eddie & The Cruisers CD (1983) Original Soundtrack
Schrei songs
$6.95 There was a year's delay before this film, which concerns the mysterious death of a fictional '60s rock star, took off via video and cable TV; but when it did, the soundtrack album, featuring such songs as "On the Dark Side" and "Tender Years," by John Cafferty And The Beaver Brown Band, took off with it. To most, the music sounded like Bruce Springsteen clones, but it was appealing nonetheless. ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Elton John Greatest Hits 1970-2002 CDs (2002) Digipak
Schrei album
$15.39 Initial pressings of this first edition contain a bonus disc.
Recorded between 1970 & 2002. Includes liner notes by Paul Gambaccini.
Here you go, Elton fans--a definitive two-disc collection of some of the bespectacled one's most beloved tunes. The full gamut of Elton John's stellar career is covered here. The archetypal singer-songwriter introspection of "Your Song" kicks things off, giving way in short order to the more glam pop moments of "Honky Cat" and "Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting." The Roy Orbison-like ballad "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" and the moving, mournful "Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word" represent the sadder side of the usually ...
| | Butch Walker I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart CD (2010)
Schrei CD music
$11.80 The day that Butch Walker runs out of melodies will be a dark day indeed, but he shows little sign of decline on his fifth solo effort. Like Sycamore Meadows, this album finds the 40-year-old Walker in a contemplative, autobiographical mood, referencing everything from his hair metal past to his Los Angeles home. It's ostensibly a breakup record, too, with a rather despondent title and another sad, Southern-styled ballad, "Don't You Think Someone Should Take You Home," that sounds like the companion piece to 2008's "Here Comes The." If Walker is heartbroken, though, he doesn't show it during some of the album's best songs, from the roots rocker "Trash Day" to the shuffling "Temporary Title." Bad feelings also don't prevent him from ornamenting the album with some of his best production to date. A sweeping, Phil Spector-styled string section opens "Pretty Melody," swells of vocal harmony pop up throughout "Stripped Down Version," and violins dart around the melody in "House of Cards." Michael Trent receives co-writing credits for roughly half of these tracks, but I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart is a Butch Walker album through and through. It's also one of his best, proof that Walker still can't take a step without bumping into a usable hook. ~ Andrew Leahey

| | Impressions People Get Ready CD (1965) Japan
Schrei music CDs
$32.75 As with the previous year's Keep on Pushing, People Get Ready featured another big Curtis Mayfield hit, one that made as strong an impact on the civil-rights movement as on the charts. One of the most beautiful songs of the '60s, "People Get Ready" set the oft-used "gospel train" as its theme, with Mayfield speaking of faith for the present and deliverance in the future, while Sam Gooden and Fred Cash contributed beautiful harmony vocals (and a few lines of their own). That career touchstone aside, the rest of the material on the LP wasn't as strong as Keep on Pushing or the Impressions' marvelous debut. The two winners were "Woman's Got Soul" and "You Must Believe Me," both in a similar brassy, uptown mode as expected from the Chicago soul kingpins. A few of the songs were hauled out from as long as three years ago, like Mayfield's own version of "Can't Work No Longer," a Billy Butler hit he'd produced (also in 1965). The exceptional harmonies and arrangements were still in place, but for a few songs ...

| | Josh Funk Jukebox Envy CD (2004)
Schrei CD music
$8.55 His sometimes satirical and unashamedly heartfelt lyrics draw the picture of who he is and where he is going. Hailing from Chico, CA, Josh Funk started writing songs as soon as he figured out his first three chords and by the age of 15 was already winning city songwriting competitions against people twice his age. "I never thought through what I was doing when I was a kid. I just started writing songs and that's still what I do today. Now looking back on it, I feel blessed for my naivety, and wish I had more of it."By the time he was 17, Josh started to build a small following when he was given his own night at a coffee shop called the Daily Grind. "I played there for about five months, and in a way my songwriting grew up then. At first only a couple of friends showed up to watch me but by the end, the place was standing room only. This was soon followed by his first solo effort in 2000 with the release of "The Outlet Disadvantage" followed in 2004 by his 6 song EP "A Jukebox Envy."One particular song "Supermodel" caught notice of L.A. producer Rob Beaton (Buckethead, Adam Cohen, Budapest Symphony Orchestra) who brought Josh down to track "So Glad You Could Make It" which would end up being released on the Swinghouse Records compilation of up and coming alternative artists to watch out for.2007 will see the release of his third album "The Face You Show Your Enemies." With more production, songwriting experience, and exposure this time around Josh has honed his style ...
