| | John Adams Adams: On The Transmigration Of Souls / Maazel, Nypo CD (2004)
Beck And Call / Carolyn Beck
$12.35 This album received the 2005 Grammy Awards for "Best Classical Album," "Best Orchestral Performance," and "Best Classical Contemporary Composition."
The New York Philharmonic and Lincoln Center exercised superb judgment in commissioning John Adams for a work commemorating the heroes and victims of 9/11. Few composers could effectively articulate the horror of that day or live up to the responsibility of representing the enormity of such tragedy and sorrow while appropriately honoring the memory of all those who perished. Adams, through a musical language that's erudite yet reassuringly accessible, is unique in his ability to connect with listeners without compromising artistic integrity.
'On the Transmigration of Souls' is a stunning work. It incorporates pre-recorded sounds and voices into a live performance by children's chorus, adult chorus, and orchestra to create a richly textured soundscape that's haunting yet somehow uplifting. Invoking the spirit of Charles Ives, the densely layered piece avoids the pitfalls of cheap sentimentality and sensationalism, but instead conveys a sense of time and place that falls somewhere between reality and a dream-like state. The New York Choral Artists and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, as well as Lorin Maazel and the members of the orchestra, deserve special credit for their consummate artistry in meeting the demands of this difficult score. Adams is to be commended for responding to the pressure of a commission of this magnitude with a work of profound sensitivity and grace.
The Wire (p.50) - "[Adams is] an extremely subtle orchestrator, and in terms of orchestration alone this is one of his best works....The range of textures he draws from The New York Philharmonic and the two choirs at his disposal is extraordinary."
REVIEWS:
| | Elina Garanca Bel Canto CD (2009)
Beck And Call / Carolyn Beck
$13.89 In assembling the arias in BEL CANTO, Elina Garanca , the Latvian mezzo-soprano who has won rave reviews for the beauty and agility of her voice, spent considerable time poring over manuscripts and scores of operas by the greatest bel canto composers, Gaetano Donizetti, Vincenzo Belliini, and Gioacchino Rossini. Garanca picked the resulting selections for their depth of character portrayal and suitability to her voice. Arias from off-the-beaten-path operas like Donizetti's L'ASSEDIO DI CALAIS and DOM SEBASTIAN, and Bellini's ADELSON E SALVINI rub shoulders with more familiar offerings from these composers, and they showcase her dramatic flair to full effect. Claudio Abbado directs the Bologna Teatro Comunale Orchestra and Choir.
2009 release. Elina Garanca follows her exceptional DG debut splash, Aria Cantilena, with bel canto solos and ensembles featuring guest luminaries like Ildebrando d'Arcangelo. Flawless coloratura and a 'one-in-a-million' mezzo (The Independent) make this exciting young artist ideal for this repertoire. Balancing familiar numbers and ensembles with little known treasures by Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini, Elina rides bel canto's vocal acrobatics and spun out melodies through an emotional spectrum to unforgettable effect Universal
