(2 Customer Reviews)
Kenny Rogers sure can write 'em, and even those who dismiss the country-pop star's catchy, well-written commercial fare will know half the words to the tunes on 21 NUMBER ONES. This EMI compilation is not the most comprehensive Rogers collection on the market, nor is it necessarily representative of his best work as an artist, but a listen through these 21 tracks will make one thing clear: Rogers's songs are an indelible part of the fabric of American pop culture.
Kicking off the with "The Gambler" (still one of Rogers's most infectious and enjoyable tunes), 21 NUMBER ONES hits all the usual suspects, from the Lionel Richie-penned "Lady," to the twangy feel-good parable "Coward of the County," to the epically romantic "She Believes in Me" to "Lucille," Rogers's breakthrough crossover hit from 1976. There are also plenty of the duets Rogers is famous for, including ones with Sheena Easton, Dolly Parton, Dottie West, and Kim Carnes. Longtime fans will most likely have all of this material, but as a primer on the superstar's biggest hits, it's hard to find a better collection.
Personnel: Kenny Rogers; Dottie West; Ronnie Milsap; Sheena Easton; Dolly Parton; Kim Carnes; Alison Krauss, Billy Dean.

21 Number Ones songs
$9.69 Nights Are Forever was the breakthrough album for Dan Seals and John Coley after some sincere and excellent work on A&M Records in the early '70s. Two of their biggest hits were the title track and the beautiful "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight." Those songs are a good indication of the fine performances this 1976 album contains. The duo's originals like "Long Way Home" and the Dan Fogelberg-ish "Westward Wind" could have been hits as well displaying superb musicianship and delicate vocals. This album is very much a companion piece to the Parker McGee album recorded around the same time, on the same label, with pretty much the same musicians. Producer Kyle Lehning has the sounds so similar a survey panel would probably not be able ...
| | England Dan Dr. Heckle & Mr. Jive CD (1978) Reissued
21 Number Ones album
$9.55 The sincerity of their days on A&M Records has turned to total formula by the time Dr. Heckyl & Mr. Jive came around -- and Robert Louis Stevenson expert, author Ray McNally, makes it clear in his book on Mr. Hyde that the true pronunciation is Dr. Jeekill (as in, "I Kill and Hide"). It is quite a paradox that this justified attack on the Hollywood system uses the mispronunciation of this famous title which Hollywood forced upon the world. Were these singers that clever to have slipped this in as a sly parody? Probably not -- because the sentiment in the poem here is right on, but the execution of the title track, is as musically contrived as it sounds. This album shows the worst, and the best, of this productive duo. "Running After You" falls into the former category, but their hit rendition of the Todd Rundgren tune "Love Is ...
| | England Dan Some Things Don't Come Easy CD (1978)
21 Number Ones CD music
$10.65 If Dowdy Ferry Road was their bleak moment in song, Some Things Don't Come Easy is the calm before the storm, a port prior to the schizophrenia that was Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive. Wandering songs like "Who's Lonely Now" are indicative of this album, and it is only one of two titles the singers pen together. They look alike on the smiling, happy airbrushed front cover, but you can almost see sadness in their eyes on the photos on the back. It must have been an intense period as they came up with yet another Top Ten hit, their fifth of six. "We'll Never Have to Say Goodbye Again" was written by Jeffrie Comanor and is far and away the best song on ...

$11.39 Yahaloma ------ Kim Thomas is Yahaloma and Yahaloma believes in using talent to serve a higher purpose. Entertainment is certainly its own reward but here is an artist that finds profound reasons to entertain. Here is passion for not only music but also its place in the heavens – and for YHWH. Can't Live Without ... ---- Contemporary Hebrew Gospel and inspirational artist Yahaloma embraces music as a need in life, something necessary for existence. For that reason, it is the perfect medium, especially with its unique communicative abilities, for Yahaloma to honor YHWH and spirituality. “I can't live without singing and writing. It is in my blood! I was created with this in my system, and it makes me who I am. I feel that I am doing what I was created to do when I do music.” For Yahaloma, music is a YHWH-given talent and the proper respects must be made – all while creating top notch music for the 21st century believer. Prayerful Potency ------- People don't always think of music as praying. But praying is communication with YHWH and music is the great communicator – and it gets the emotions involved. “I always say, 'He who sings, prays twice!'” ... I just love what I do.” It's a simple fact. Yahaloma loves music and YHWH and pours 100% into both. Inspiration --------- There's a deep implication for the idea of musical inspiration when spiritually-oriented music is involved. “I am inspired by Abba, Yahweh.” Though of course there are connecting influences in the world's realm. “I have many influences, but the biggest is family. They give me the support that has kept me going, even when we couldn't see where we were headed.” Work -------- Yahaloma has earned best song of the year acclaim from Eagle Productions ...
