Alanis Morissette's one-time voice teacher Lynn Miles's third album is a confident foray into the realms of country rock that displays her considerable songwriting skills time and again on songs like the Byrds-like title track, the brooding "Night Drive," and the simple, perfectly realized "Trying Not to Be So Sad."

Smile, Lynn, Smile The poetess of sadness and North Country chill is back with an album of new songs-her first in four years since the magnificent UNRAVEL. Although not quite up to that high standard (nor that of her equally wonderful second cd, SLIGHTLY HAUNTED), there's lots to love on this new release. In fact, the title cut and a number of others are about the edges of love, the wishes for it, and the walls which keep it out or keep it in. Lynn's way with a melody is as engaging as ever, her almost talking and then singing approach as direct and personal as it ever was, her wistfulness and wishfulness and sadness as palpable as always.
A THOUSAND LOVERS COULD PUT THEIR ARMS AROUND ME
A THOUSAND WISHES COULD FALL LIKE SUMMER RAIN
A THOUSAND MOTHERS COULD SING
"HUSH NOW, DON'T YOU CRY"
THERE IS NOTHING IN THIS WORLD TONIGHT THAT IS GOING TO
TAKE AWAY MY PAIN.
But joy breaks through sometimes or will soon-particularly in "This is the Night" and "Sweet and Tender Heart." You wish that for Lynn. You want the down-turned sides of her sensitive mouth to lift. This beautiful Canadian has done it again. Lovely. Submitted by David T. Steere, Jr. (Annapolis, MD, USA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo This review is for a different format.
