Two of the most consistently exciting and inventive talents in jazz--drummer Jack DeJohnette and guitarist Bill Frisell--join forces on this unique and wonderful outing. Those who suspect that an album-length duet between a guitarist and a drummer couldn't be as rich and fully realized as a larger ensemble obviously don't know the work of either artist.
DeJohnette has played with everyone from Miles Davis on, and is still one of the most sophisticated and challenging percussionists on the scene. And Frisell's genre-spanning excursions and otherworldly atmospheres (heightened by a liberal use of effects) must be heard to be believed. This set, recorded live at the Earshot Jazz Festival in 2001, takes the listener through 11 compositions that range from wildly experimental ("Cat and Mouse") to lushly ambient ("Storm Clouds and Mist") while hitting every gorgeous, thrilling point in between. Recommended.

Down Beat (p.68) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "It's all improvised, and full of unexpected developments....The album is impressionistic..." JazzTimes (p.147) - "[T]hey create a symphony of controlled cacophony in the moment that resonates with drama, groove and lyricism while covering a range of emotions." Elephant Sleeps But Still Remembers album
$21.15 EXTENDED PLAY was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
With a front line that features saxophone, trombone, and vibraphone/marimba, the Dave Holland Quintet features an immediately identifiable band sound. As for backing, bassist Holland and traps man Billy Kilson provide a push-me-pull-you, supple and responsive rhythm section that is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to accompaniment ideas.

| | Paul Motian I Have The Room Above Her CD (2005)
Elephant Sleeps But Still Remembers CD music
$13.69 To put drummer Paul Motian, guitarist Bill Frisell, and saxophonist Joe Lovano in a room together is to court majesty and genius; even if the three were playing hackneyed standards half-asleep, the results would likely be brilliant. I HAVE THE ROOM ABOVE HER is filled with the kind of technical mastery and scintillating chemistry one would ...

Elephant Sleeps But Still Remembers music CDs
$17.05 Though Bill Frisell's standing was never in doubt, this two-disc live set further confirms the guitarist's position as one of the most talented, flexible, and innovative musicians of his generation. Frisell has worked with almost every ensemble configuration imaginable, so it's something of a treat to hear him perform in a trio here; ...
| | Trio Beyond Saudades CDs (2006)
Elephant Sleeps But Still Remembers songs
$21.55 Trio Beyond is the name of the group that played at Queen Elizabeth's Hall in London, 2004. Jack DeJohnette initiated a project to pay tribute to the late Tony Williams' Lifetime -- with the late Larry Young on organ and guitarist John McLaughlin, all three were Miles alumni -- a band that, along with the Miles Davis band, spearheaded the jazz-rock fusion era. DeJohnette replaced Williams in the Davis group, and John Scofield is also a Miles alumnus; Larry Goldings had been approached by Williams in 1997 to put together an organ trio with a similar concept to Lifetime; Williams passed away shortly thereafter. The results on this double-disc album, Saudades, are explosive, dynamic, and utterly compelling. The repertoire comes from Lifetime's ...

Elephant Sleeps But Still Remembers album
$13.39 Recorded between 1939 and 2001. Includes liner notes by Lloyd Rauch and Ross Firestone.
Jerry Jerome was a veteran of the orchestras of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, and Artie Shaw, but he was semi-retired and out of the limelight until producer Mat Domber arranged to record him. Like his earlier release for Arbors, Something Borrowed, Something Blue features one CD of vintage recordings from his personal collection and a second disc of new sessions; Jerome provides spoken introductions to the historic material. Joined by Tyree Glenn on vibes, he proves himself to be a capable clarinetist ...
