Two of the most consistently exciting and inventive talents in jazz--drummer Jack DeJohnette and guitarist Bill Frisell--join forces on this unique and wonderful outing. Those who suspect that an album-length duet between a guitarist and a drummer couldn't be as rich and fully realized as a larger ensemble obviously don't know the work of either artist.
DeJohnette has played with everyone from Miles Davis on, and is still one of the most sophisticated and challenging percussionists on the scene. And Frisell's genre-spanning excursions and otherworldly atmospheres (heightened by a liberal use of effects) must be heard to be believed. This set, recorded live at the Earshot Jazz Festival in 2001, takes the listener through 11 compositions that range from wildly experimental ("Cat and Mouse") to lushly ambient ("Storm Clouds and Mist") while hitting every gorgeous, thrilling point in between. Recommended.
Personnel: Jack DeJohnette (vocals, piano, drums, percussion); Bill Frisell (guitar, banjo).
Recording information: 2001.
Down Beat (p.68) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "It's all improvised, and full of unexpected developments....The album is impressionistic..." JazzTimes (p.147) - "[T]hey create a symphony of controlled cacophony in the moment that resonates with drama, groove and lyricism while covering a range of emotions." Elephant Sleeps But Still Remembers
$21.15 EXTENDED PLAY was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
With a front line that features saxophone, trombone, and vibraphone/marimba, the Dave Holland Quintet features an immediately identifiable band sound. As for backing, bassist Holland and traps man Billy Kilson provide a push-me-pull-you, supple and responsive rhythm section that is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to accompaniment ideas.
The thing that separates the men from the boys in the world of jazz improvisation is listening--when the performers are paying close attention to one another, the creative horizons are all but limitless. It would be a slight to say this quintet is all ...
| | Paul Motian I Have The Room Above Her CD (2005)
Elephant Sleeps But Still Remembers
$14.65 The delicate imbrication of parts lends these compositions the feel of fragile, shifting houses suspended in air. Motian's drumming is crucial to this aesthetic--light years beyond standard beat-keeping, his approach to time is all suggestion and evocative accent. Aside from the Hammerstein/Kern title track and a sweet, ethereal take on Thelonious Monk's "Dreamland," all the tunes were written by Motian, his rich imagination informed by classic jazz, post-bop, avant-garde, and ambient music alike. The silent partner here is producer Manfred Eicher, whose ear for warm, resonant tones and expansive atmospheres is the perfect match for the inventiveness, lyricism, and exquisite beauty of this session.
