Experimental popsters His Name is Alive's first record since leaving their home at the legendary 4AD Records proves the band lost no momentum in the move. In fact, 2006's DETROLA, released on Reincarnate, is one of the band's most focused and accomplished efforts. Chilly electro keyboards, memorable Beatlesque melodies, acoustic singer-songwriterisms, and ethereal collages mix together for a unique and immediately appealing sound.
The band's trademark sonic tweaking is in full effect here, even when it is used in the service of comparatively straightforward song structures (as on the excellent "After I Leave You," which rides a thin, distorted electro-groove). By merging classic psychedelia, new wave, electronica, folk, and mainstream pop, DETROLA bounces between the '60s, '70s, '80s, and the future with enough tuneful integrity and general inventiveness to keep listeners coming back for more.
Arranger: Warren Defever.
His Name Is Alive: Fender (vocals, saxophone, trumpet); Lovetta Pippen, Erika Hoffmann, Andrea (vocals); Jamie Saltsman (strings, bass instrument, upright bass); Jean Cook (strings); Faruq Z. Bey (saxophone); Scott Goldstein, Daniel Piccolo (drums); Elliot Bergman (mbira); Olman Piedra, Gentle Jamie (percussion); Hitoko (bells); Jacob Danziger, Justin Walter.

Magnet (p.99) - "Most of DETROLA concerns itself with creating dreamscapes, centering the music in quiet keyboard drones and frozen country landscapes..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.101) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "There are some great moments...like 'Summer Left Your Heart Behind', with its sax and bass clarinet ensemble and the glorious, effortlessly buoyant tune, 'Seven Minutes In Heaven'..." | | U2 No Line On The Horizon CD (2009)
Detrola songs
$10.49 There's no shortage of legendary producers in line to work with music world titans U2; when work with Rick Rubin broke off, Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois stepped in. The resulting NO LINE ON THE HORIZON, 2009's offering from the Irish rockers, continues in the grand U2 tradition, as soaring pop anthems like opening single "Get on Your Boots" pair with experimental melanges like "Tripoli," on a striking album featuring touches of all the albums come before, yet hinting at new worlds for Bono to conquer.
After spending the 1990s experimenting with electronic music and returning to arena-ready rock during the first few years of the 21st century, U2 stakes out territory somewhere between those two points on 2009's NO LINE ON THE HORIZON. Enlisting its go-to production trio of Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Steve Lillywhite, the Irish quartet seems intent on crafting a quirkier companion piece to HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB, and they succeed with restless tracks such as "Get on Your Boots," which sounds like "Vertigo" hijacked by T. Rex, and "Stand Up Comedy," a wiry number that lets the Edge cut loose with barbed guitar lines. Some of most striking songs on HORIZON are the ones that venture farthest from U2's comfort zone, as on the surprisingly weighty title track, a tune that counterbalances its nearly industrial heft with a high-pitched keyboard melody, and, of course, Bono's soaring vocals. Although HORIZON is willfully less accessible than BOMB or ...

Detrola CD music
$6.09 This 1998 reissue contains 5 bonus tracks (including the previously
unreleased "White Christmas") not included on the original release.
John Denver's music always had a warm, home-spun quality to it, so it isn't surprising that his 1975 holiday effort, Rocky Mountain Christmas, is a wonderfully low-key and friendly Christmas album. Divided between classic carols and new numbers, such as the fine "Aspenglow" and "Christmas for Cowboys," the album is an appealing, pretty record, perfect for late nights by the fireside. The 1998 CD reissue adds five bonus tracks: "Jingle Bells," "White ...

Detrola music CDs
$6.99 Colour Revolt, which, despite the British spelling in its name, is from Mississippi, begins its self-titled debut EP with "Blood in Your Mouth," a song that leads off with a Bob Dylan-style harmonica and an acoustic guitar to accompany Jesse Coppenbarger's throaty, expressive singing. Before long, however, the band has revved up behind the guitars of Jimmy Cajoleas and Sean Kirkpatrick, and Colour Revolt is sounding more like a hard rock/heavy metal outfit than a folk-rock one. The other song titles, including "Mattresses Underwater" and "Our Homes Are Graves," suggest that the band's music has been affected by Hurricane Katrina, which forced the musicians to find a new recording space. But Coppenbarger, whose vocals are often allowed to reach distortion volume in the mix, seems to have more general concerns in mind. "Ash to ash and dust to dust, we're all gonna die, so we have to trust something, though it might be nothing," he and his bandmates harmonize in "Mattresses Underwater," which turns out to be the disc's most delicate number, but, he adds paradoxically and defiantly, "It's gotta be something." "A New Family" is another ballad with angst-filled lyrics, and the foreboding seems ...
