His Name Is Alive: Fender (vocals, saxophone, trumpet); Lovetta Pippen, Erika Hoffmann, Andrea (vocals); Jamie Saltsman (strings, bass instrument, upright bass); Jean Cook (strings); Faruq Z. Bey (saxophone); Scott Goldstein, Daniel Piccolo (drums); Elliot Bergman (mbira); Olman Piedra, Gentle Jamie (percussion); Hitoko (bells); Jacob Danziger, Justin Walter. Personnel: Lovetta Sharie Pippen (vocals); Jacob Danziger (violin, strings); Elliot Bergman (flute, bass clarinet, saxophone, alto saxophone, piano); Justin Walter (trumpet); Scott Goldstein, Dan Piccolo (drums); Hitoko Sakai (bells). Arranger: Warren Defever. Experimental popsters His Name is Alive's first record since leaving their home at the legendary 4AD Records proves the band lost no momentum in the move. In fact, 2006's DETROLA, released on Reincarnate, is one of the band's most focused and accomplished efforts. Chilly electro keyboards, memorable Beatlesque melodies, acoustic singer-songwriterisms, and ethereal collages mix together for a unique and immediately appealing sound. The band's trademark sonic tweaking is in full effect here, even when it is used in the service of comparatively straightforward song structures (as on the excellent "After I Leave You," which rides a thin, distorted electro-groove). By merging classic psychedelia, new wave, electronica, folk, and mainstream pop, DETROLA bounces between the '60s, '70s, '80s, and the future with enough tuneful integrity and general inventiveness to keep listeners coming back for more. So, they are alive after all. Even the most die-hard His Name Is Alive fans could be forgiven for thinking that the band had broken up -- or at least gone into a deep hibernation -- after the release of their final 4AD album, Last Night. Though Warn Defever and Company were actually busier than ever with special MP3-only releases and albums and EPs on smaller labels like Ypsilanti, En/Of, and Defever's own Time Stereo, the lack of any widely released new material seemed ominous. Fortunately, Detrola, His Name Is Alive's debut album for the aptly named Reincarnate Music, puts to rest any worries about the band's existence and is definitely worth the four-year wait. Detrola sounds like the highlights of all of the band's previous albums chopped up and reconfigured into songs that sound familiar, fresh, and utterly His Name Is Alive; actually, it could make as good an introduction to their freewheeling musical invention as the 4AD comp Always Stay Sweet does. "Introduction" nods to the drama and spookiness of their earliest work: a heartbroken late-night lament surrounded by loops of noise and applause that turns into deafening noise, it sounds like it was recorded at Mulholland Drive's Club Silencio. "*C*A*T*S*," meanwhile, updates the ethereal atmospheres of Home Is in Your Head with meowing synths. "Your Bones" is a delicate acoustic ballad that could've easily appeared on Mouth by Mouth or Stars on ESP, while "Seven Minutes"' tight, sexy electro-jazz fusion proves that Lovetta Pippen is still a crucial part of the band's wide-ranging sound. Detrola finds the band exploring the same themes that have always run through their music: spirituality, sensuality, and mortality. It's doubtful that any other group could turn a simple statement like "you need a heart to live" into something as equally sweet and scary the way His Name Is Alive can. While Detrola sounds a lot like the band's earlier work, it's still inventive. The avant-pop on Mouth by Mouth, Stars on ESP, and Ft. Lake is still fresh-sounding, and this album's updates on that aesthetic are, in turn, a step forward. "After I Leave You" and "In My Dreams" use synth pop as an inspiration in a way that sounds futuristic, even alien, instead of stuck in the '80s. On the other hand, "I Thought I Saw" sounds like a slightly skewed take on "Wedding Bell Blues" and other sweet, sad soul classics, and "Get Your Curse" could be taken for '70s singer/songwriter pop ifMagnet (p.99) - "Most of DETROLA concerns itself with creating dreamscapes, centering the music in quiet keyboard drones and frozen country landscapes..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.101) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "There are some great moments...like 'Summer Left Your Heart Behind', with its sax and bass clarinet ensemble and the glorious, effortlessly buoyant tune, 'Seven Minutes In Heaven'..." | | Zac Brown Foundation CD (2008)
Detrola
$12.55 On 2008's THE FOUNDATION, singer/guitarist Zac Brown leads his ensemble on a vibrant set of country-rock. While the Georgia-based performer is clearly comfortable with ballads (see his emotive cover of Ray LaMontagne's "Jolene"), he seems most at home on twangy, carefree tracks such as "Toes," "Chicken Fried," and "Sic `Em on a Chicken." Now that Jimmy Buffett has tried repositioning himself as a country artist by cutting duets with the likes of Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney and Clint Black, it should come as no surprise that the Parrothead influence has begun making its way into Nashville, and the first major-label effort from Zac Brown features not one but two songs ("Toes" and "Where the Boat Leaves From") devoted to the joys of getting buzzed and playing music in some seaside locale with good weather. Seeing how most of the great names of country's formative era rarely if ever sang about vacationing (beyond spending the odd night in a honky-tonk), this is an interesting and somewhat puzzling development, though Brown and his band have embraced a canny range of marketable influences on The Foundation. "Chicken Fried" is a radio-friendly homage to country-as-lifestyle ...
| | Rush Working Men CD (2009)
Detrola
$14.54 Rush is no stranger to best-of compilation albums, they've released a slew of them. They are also no stranger to DVDs. To mark their 35th anniversary, they've released Working Men, which is both; it marks their first best-of live compilation exclusively from the DVD sets Rush in Rio (2003), R30 (2005), and Snakes & Arrows Live (2008). There is also an unreleased cut from R30 -- a killer version of One Little Victory. While fans may simply regard this as a record company cash grab, hardcore fans know how closely Rush monitors each release and controls all aspects of their career. On hearing these tracks without benefit of the visuals, it becomes lucidly clear that in the 21st century, Rush plays more like a hungry act looking to prove themselves rather than as seasoned veterans jaded by the entire business. The instrumental interaction between Neal Peart, Alex Lifeson, and Geddy Lee is utterly uncanny, the anticipation and the willingness to add flourishes and to challenge one another in the bridges and solo sections reveal their command of the material and their empathies for one another's playing strengths. One of the more revealing things on a live record ...
| | Megadeth Endgame CD (2009)
Detrola
$15.65 Lyricist: Dave Mustaine. Personnel: Dave Mustaine (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, piano); Chris Broderick (guitar, acoustic guitar); James LoMenzo (bass guitar); Shawn Drover (drums, percussion); Chris Rodriguez, Chris Clancy (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Andy Sneap. Illustrator: John Lorenzi. Photographer: Ross Halfin. The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- that's exactly what's come to pass. The group's second release for Roadrunner, ...
