Composer: James Horner. Lyricist: Glen Ballard. Personnel: Hayley Westenra (vocals). Audio Mixer: Simon Rhodes. Recording information: Todd-AO Scoring Studio, Studio City, CA. Editor: Simon Rhodes. For Terrence Malick's THE NEW WORLD, veteran composer/conductor James Horner crafted a gorgeous score that perfectly echoes the renowned director's highly visual, atmospheric style of filmmaking. To accentuate Malick's love of natural beauty--revealed in lingering shots of wildlife and unspoiled landscapes--Horner utilizes subtly swelling horn lines, nuanced string passages, and even the delicate sounds of birdsong. Acclaimed singer Hayley Westenra provides vocals on a number of tracks, most notably the closing song "Listen to the Wind," which was written and produced by Horner and pop guru Glen Ballard. Aside from that final number, though, the soundtrack is predominantly understated, almost to the point of being ambient, marking it as a rarity in the often bombastic realm of Hollywood film scores. $51.19 Original Soundtrack/Howard Shore: Edward Ross, Elizabeth Fraser, London Oratory School Schola, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Mabel Faletolu. This nicely packaged box set, spread out over three CDs and a DVD-Audio (which features the score in Surround Sound), contains the complete score for FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, the first film in the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. Composer Howard Shore's sweepingly epic, award-winning music for the film is presented in its entirety, and the greater scope of the box set, not to mention the stunning sound, reveal the work in its true grandeur. Naturally, Enya's "May It Be" (which was nominated for an Oscar) is here as well, making this a hefty souvenir for enthusiasts of the film. Appropriately enough for the film adaptation ...

$13.89 Live in Tokyo doesn't capture PiL at its best moment. Lydon is supported by a set of anonymous backing musicians, as he tries to squeeze some added milage out of the hit single "This Is Not A Love Song." The group's performance is bland and the entire record seems rather opportunistic, making it the weakest entry in PiL's catalog. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine After guitarist Keith Levene and bassist Pete Jones left Public Image Limited due to major concerns about the direction John Lydon wanted to take the band, Lydon and drummer Martin Atkins reformed the group with members of a New Jersey outfit, Westside Frankie and the Inglewood Jerks, who knew the Sex Pistols' catalog by heart. The band toured Japan in the summer of 1983, and were offered the chance to record two shows on rare Japanese digital recording equipment while in Tokyo. Atkins would later say the resulting album was released not because of the quality of the show itself, but because of the opportunity to record a live album digitally. Comprising of material from throughout the group's history, Live in Tokyo was originally released as two 12" 45's, in keeping with the style of the earlier Metal Box. ...

$12.65 Principal Cast: Jeffrey Wright (Lincoln); Mos Def (Booth). Includes liner notes by Suzan-Lori Parks. Principal cast includes: Jeffrey Wright, Mos Def. Personnel: Jeffrey Wright (vocals, guitar). Recording information: The Cutting Room, New York, NY. Director: George C. Wolfe. Photographer: Michael Daniels. The music used in the Broadway play Topdog/Underdog, about two orphaned African-American brothers, is a mixed and disjointed bag, like many such plays that use a variety of music from records in the production. The 12 selections include some important African-American music, but the jumble of blues, soul, jazz, and hip-hop doesn't flow well as a listening experience, even if it might be more effective or logical as the background setting ...
