(1 Customer Review)
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
LONG WALK TO FREEDOM (2006) celebrates Ladysmith Black Mambazo's rich, prolific career via a concise 13-track set. For LONG WALK, the South African vocal group selected some of their finest compositions and rerecorded them with contributions from guest artists like Sarah McLachlan, Emmylou Harris, and Zap Mama.
The track list features many of Ladysmith's biggest songs, including their 1973 international hit "Nomathemba," and two tracks from Paul Simon's GRACELAND (the recording that brought them to widespread attention in America). The group's unique sound, built on lush, layered harmonies, township-influenced song structures, and rhythmic clicks and whirs, is dazzlingly apparent on nearly every track. While not a comprehensive retrospective, LONG WALK TO FREEDOM is an excellent sampler of this dynamic group's achievements.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo: Marie Daulne, Zap Mama (vocals).
Additional personnel: Tanja Daese, Lene Noegaard Christensen (vocals).Down Beat (p.73) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he 'Thula Thula' Shabalala solo, an improvisation of a traditional lullaby, is showstopping....The highlight is the gently lilting and uplifting 'Shosholoza'..." JazzTimes (p.77) - "[W]ith fresh recordings featuring a multicultural assortment of A-list guests....Most stirring is an exalted 'Shosholoza'...featuring a grand summit of South African music giants." Dirty Linen (p.91) - "[A] fairly comprehensive collection of the group's heaviest hits recorded with guest artists..." **Super Audio CD (SACD) Hybrid** This CD will play in standard CD players. Long Walk To Freedom album
$16.05 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
DARK SIDE OF THE MOON was a benchmark record. It turned the musical world on its ear with a hitherto unseen combination of sounds, and changed things considerably for Pink Floyd. For this project, Pink Floyd resurrected older and unfinished numbers, some of which came from the multitude of soundtracks the band members had previously worked on. The film ZABRISKIE POINT, a study of American materialism from a foreigner's perspective, provided "Us and Them" (originally titled "The Violence Sequence"). Waters rewrote "Breathe" after its appearance on his and avant-garde composer Ron Geesin's score for THE BODY, a surreal medical documentary.
Floyd and their long-time engineer, Alan Parsons, used a multitude of sound effects--from stereophonically projected footsteps and planes flying overhead ("On the Run") to a roomful of ringing clocks ("Time"). Further adding to the record's mystique, barely audible spoken passages were sprinkled throughout--a result of hours interviewing random Abbey Road occupants ...

Long Walk To Freedom CD music
$17.15 The title of this television-advertised compilation may be arrogant, but then the tango is not a dance for the shy and retiring. Whether or not it is, as it claims, The Best Tango Album in the World, Ever!, the two-disc set, containing 30 tracks and running a little less than an hour and a half, does feature some major performers of the music, notably Carlos Gardel, renowned as the father of the tango, heard performing "Volver" and the concluding vocal version of "Mi Buenos Aires Querido," and Astor Piazzolla, who used the tango as a vehicle for composing modern classical music, ...

| | Diana Krall Girl In The Other Room CD (2004) Hybrid; SACD Hybrid
Long Walk To Freedom album
$15.19 This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
It may or may not be significant that Diana Krall's first album of new material since the ascendance of Norah Jones is the former's least jazzy, most pop-savvy album of her career. In any case, it marks Krall's biggest departure to date; THE GIRL IN THE OTHER ROOM is almost entirely devoid of the jazz standards that constituted her previous repertoire, and it contains her first recorded batch of original songs. It's possible that new husband Elvis Costello, who co-wrote all six of those tunes with his wife, was the agent provocateur. It's also feasible that Costello, who has previously recorded Mose Allison material and palled around with Tom Waits, nudged Krall toward such choice selections as Allison's bluesy plaint "Stop This World" and Waits's cocktail rhumba "Temptation." Nevertheless, Krall delivers them--like the rest of the songs here--in a misty, laconic style very consistent with her earlier work.
There's no attempt at pop-oriented production here, just the same piano-trio sound that's been Krall's ...
| | Mark Knopfler Sailing To Philadelphia CDs (2000) includes bonus DVD
Long Walk To Freedom CD music
$21.35 Having crafted such a singular sound for himself both in Dire Straits and as a respected film composer, it's gratifying to hear that Mark Knopfler's consummate musicianship has only gotten better on what is only his second solo album in a career that began in the mid- '70s. For SAILING TO PHILADELPHIA, Knopfler once again looks to America for inspiration, starting with the stirring title track that draws from Thomas Pynchon's fictionalized account of English adventurers/surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon and which finds James Taylor playing Mason to Knopfler's Dixon. Other numbers benefiting from this ...
