Based on the legend of the London barber who murdered his clients and made meat pies from their cadavers, the musical SWEENY TODD, with music and lyrics by composed by Stephen Sondheim, had a stunningly successful revival in 2005. This album features the production's Broadway cast of actor/musicians, who perform their own musical accompaniment.

This is the definative version of "Sweeney" Patti LuPone & Michael Cerveris bring a new dimension to the piece. Both Sondiem freaks and musical heads will love this interpretaion. I do not hesitate in giving it a five star rateing.

the sparse 'orchestrations' of this production make the tale of murder and cannibalism more haunting.

3 stars Sweeney Todd Rocks
I am proud to say that I saw the original version of ST. Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou were excellent but this new production betters the previous by miles and miles. Patti Lupone is magnificent as Mrs. Lovett making her both comical and sinister. Her voice has never been better and she plays a mean toba. Michael Cerveris sings with great authority and his performance matches that of Lupone. Together they are driven and chilling. He, by the way, plays the guitar. The CD is beautifully packaged and ever other performer is a treat to hear. I play the CD every day and I'm sure my neighbors are ready to toss is and me out the window -- but oh what a lovely fall. This is a must have CD for anyone who loves Sondheim, his grim take of revenge and death sung to the nth degree by Lupone and Cerveris.
