Following the '90s, a decade in which she rose to iconic status amid the contemporary salsa scene, India was relatively quiet, releasing an album every few years or so, without all the fanfare she enjoyed during the '90s. Soy Diferente is one of those post-'90s albums, and like its predecessor, Latin Songbird: Mi Alma y Corazón, it arrived after a few years of inactivity. Its modest release belies its exceptionality, however. Soy Diferente isn't just another India album. It's different -- well, a little different. For the most part, the album does include the kind of slickly produced, exuberantly sung salsa that had long been India's stock-in-trade. For instance, "Solamente una Noche," one of the album's standout songs, would fit nicely on one of her many greatest-hits albums, where you likely wouldn't presume that the song was from 2006 rather than 1996. So, from that standpoint, the bulk of Soy Diferente is sure to please longtime India fans, who generally are happy to have more of the same. What makes this album a little different from past ones is the integration of reggaeton on a few songs. Perhaps it was inevitable, given reggaeton's sweeping popularity among young urban Latinos, but still, those trademark galloping beats do sound striking within the context of an India album. And they strike you right away, in the opening minute of the very first song: the "Salsatón" version of the title track. The fusion of reggaeton and salsa on this song is tastefully done, rest assured. And following this opening song, the subsequent numbers are mostly straight salsa like you'd expect, until the latter quarter of the album, that is, when India reprises the title track in a straight reggaeton version and the aforementioned "Solamente una Noche" likewise. These straight reggaeton versions don't work as well as the "Salsatón" fusion of the album opener, but they do work and they are mighty interesting to hear. If anything, you must credit India for trying something new. Lastly, it's worth singling out another highlight, "Cuando Hieres a una Mujer," which boasts a feature from reggaeton superstar Ivy Queen that kicks the song into high gear, accompanied again by those infectious galloping beats. It's moments like these that make Soy Diferente a relatively exciting latter-day India release, which is saying quite a bit, given her numerous high-quality albums over the years and her decade-plus of overall activity. Above all, it's nice to hear her still sounding vibrant and willing to try new sounds and approaches. ~ Jason Birchmeier

$8.45 This longtime salsa favorite -- with the help of a little reinvention -- tops the charts once again with his 2006 record, Salsa con Reggaetón. In an effort to synthesize the old and the new, the classic and the fresh, the Univision label employed the talents of top Latin music producers Ramon B. Sanchez and Sergio George, both of whom need only touch a project for it to turn to gold. Montañez, a veteran of the world famous El Gran Combo, a crown in the Puerto Rican salsa crown, collaborated with some of the island's new breed of recording stars. Reggaeton artists like Daddy Yankee, Cheka, and Voltio are just a few who lend their flow to Montañez's ...

| | Pig Destroyer Terrifyer CD (2004) Bonus DVD
Soy Diferente album
$13.35 Of the three highly anticipated sophomore albums to come out on Relapse in the second half of 2004 -- the other two being the Dillinger Escape Plan's ghastly Miss Machine and Mastodon's good but slightly over-ambitious Leviathan -- Terrifyer is the one that really lives up to the pre-release hype and expectations. Coming three years after their proper debut full-length, A Prowler in the Yard, Terrifyer was billed early on as a two-CD concept album that would consist of one disc of short, blasting metal songs in the familiar Pig Destroyer style, plus another disc with a single extended, more experimental track. It's a similar set-up to Naked City's Black Box, which paired the hyper, cut-and-paste grindcore of Torture Garden with the slow, torturous Leng T'ch'e. The difference is that while Naked City were essentially avant-garde and never fully convincing as a metal band, Pig Destroyer is the real deal. The first disc builds on the style established with Prowler, dishing out 20 short, fast, abrasive grindcore songs, which fly by in around half-an-hour. If anything, these songs are tighter, heavier, and more punishing than the already formidable Prowler, and with an equally superb (and relentless) sense of pacing. Vocalist J.R. Hayes has diversified his delivery, adding in some wounded near-singing that's reminiscent of Today Is the Day's Steve Austin in places. Guitarist Scott Hull is a riff-master on par with the Melvins' King Buzzo and the guys in Carcass, and Brian Harvey tears up the drum kit with some of the most savage percussion work around (sans any cheap triggers or samples). The second disc contains just one track, "Natasha," a half-hour of slow, post-Melvins sludge interspersed with ambient electronic sounds and electro-acoustic samples. Note that you will need a DVD player to play this disc, as it's mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound and will not play on an ordinary CD player. Even if you consider the second disc as simply a bonus, this album is a must for death metal and grindcore fans as well as anyone else with a passing interest in the genre. ~ William York
Pig Destroyer aren't out for the middle of the road presentation with this album given the Ralph Steadman/Gerald Scarfe-styled cover art, then again it's hard to see how they would be interested in that approach in the first place. Perhaps thankfully, the cover's nowhere near as grotesque to look at as the cover of Prowler in the Yard. That said, the music? Now that high-speed grindcore of any variety is about to move into its third decade of existence, it'll take accomplished performers to step up to the plate, and this trio does have the goods -- the main album itself is over 20 tracks in 32 minutes and completely nails it in terms of strong, honestly memorable performances. Where so many groups rely on undifferentiated blur, guitarist Scott Hull and drummer Brian Harvey are masters of brief, brilliant riffs and drum blasts that are memorable hooks as much as sheer rampage. The stop-start on-a-dime switches between the songs make the entire album one long but constantly changing listen. Songs like "Gravedancer" and "Carrion Fairy" are practically classic rock in ...

Soy Diferente CD music
$40.75 On 2002's L'Eccezione, Carmen Consoli showed herself to be a mature, insightful writer capable of creating both soft, pensive songs and louder, more aggressive ones while always retaining the blend of introspection and impertinence that she's displayed since her 1996 debut. Here, on Eva Contro Eva, the contemplation remains, but this time her guitars are solely acoustic and her thoughts are directed outward towards contemporary society. In fact, it seems as if Consoli feels she has a personal obligation to expose the hypocrisies that exist, something that, while perhaps noble and even correct, ...
