This 1998 reissue contains 7 bonus tracks not on the original release.
On Ian Dury's second outing with the Blockheads, the strangely charismatic British singer continues to spout witty narratives in his trademark Cockney accent over a musical backdrop that largely eschews punk in favor of a disco vibe. Of course, this being the every-quirky Dury, the dance-floor feel on this 1979 record is loose and pub-oriented, rather than slick and club-ready. Despite the New Wave trappings, Dury still sounds like a surly traveling salesman from a long-lost era, especially when he's spewing out insults, as on the silly, swaggering "Uneasy Sunny Day Hotsy Totsy." In addition to jaunty tracks such as "Inbetweenies," the 1998 remastered reissue of DO IT YOURSELF features a handful of classic Dury singles as bonus tracks, most notably the cheeky "Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick" and the whimsical "Reasons to Be Cheerful, Part 3," making this, along with NEW BOOTS AND PANTIES, an essential disc for any respectable Dury fan.
Ian Dury's music always bordered on the functional, since it was used as a backdrop for his wry vignettes and stories, but on his second album, Do It Yourself, that aspect came to the fore. Largely abandoning the punk inflections that were scattered throughout New Boots and Panties!!, Do It Yourself is a record of mid-tempo pub rock disco -- competently played, but rarely engaging. Dury's stories are all wonderful, filled with humor and penetrating detail, but only a handful of tracks, such as the terrific "Inbetweenies," are married to actual hooks, and by the end of the record, the steady disco throb has become a little numbing. Even with these faults, Do It Yourself remains one of Dury's very best records, since his lyrical facility throughout the album is simply amazing. [Fuel 2000's 2006 reissue of Do It Yourself adds several singles -- "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick," "There Ain't Half Been Some Clever Bastards," "Reasons to Be Cheerful, Pt. 3," "Whata Waste," and a 12" mix of "Reasons to Be Cheerful" -- to the first disc. The second disc contains demos of "This Is What We Find," "Boogie Woogie (Duff 'Em Up)," "Quiet," "Babies Kept Quiet (Uneasy Sunny Day Hotsy Totsy," a backing track of "Inbetweenies," and an instrumental of "Blow." Best of all, the second disc also contains a set from the Blockheads' slot on the 1977 Stiff's Live Stiffs package tour, finding the band in terrific form as it tears through New Boots and Panties!!-era songs like "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll," "I'm Partial to Your Abracadabra," "Sweet Gene Vincent," and "Wake Up and Make Love With Me." This live set is worth the price of admission alone.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Faces Five Guys Walk Into A Bar CDs (2004) Remastered; Box Set
Do It Yourself music CDs
$39.65 Released at a time when lead singer Rod Stewart was exploring the Great American Songbook, the music presented on FIVE GUYS WALK INTO A BAR... reinforces the argument that the Faces were one of rock's great overlooked bands. The quintet's ease around a bar never diminished the organic musicianship that found them easily melding their love of rock & roll, blues, and soul.
Fueled by Ron Wood's stellar guitar work, Ian ...

Do It Yourself CD music
$11.19 PARIS 1919 is considered by many critics (and Cale fans) to be his best. Released in 1973, 1919 was recorded in Los Angeles with members of Little Feat, Wilton Felder and the UCLA Orchestra, and stands as one of the best "rock/classical" fusions, mainly because Cale (who is a classically-trained musician) avoids the heavy-handed pomp and pretensions that besiege so much "art-rock." He also ...
