Gospel Music album
$8.59 The best-known cut here is the '70s radio staple "Love the One You're With," with its percolating percussion and free-love ethos. Equally arresting is "Black Queen," an acoustic guitar showcase allegedly recorded after Stills had downed a bottle of tequila. The gorgeous, stirring "Do for the Others" is another highlight. Stills plays many of the instruments himself, but a star-studded guest list, including Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton (who plays lead on the bluesy "Go Back Home"), and Jimi Hendrix (who solos on the rocker "Old Times Good Times"). Yet this is Stills's show all the way, showcasing his songwriting, singing, and musicianship to superb effect.
This outstanding solo debut came at a particularly successful and creative time for Stephen Stills. In the first few years of the 1970s, he recorded two solo albums, released the superb Manassas double-album, and performed as part of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. No one would expect a musician spreading himself so thin to be able to make a record as focused, nuanced, and bursting with ideas as STEPHEN STILLS-- yet that is exactly what Stills did. On this varied set Stills's prodigious talent is laid bare, encompassing Memphis soul, folk, blues, gospel, rock, and good-time ...

Gospel Music CD music
$52.39 Sandwiched between his more noteworthy Russian contemporaries Scriabin and Prokofiev, the majority of Nikolai Medtner's music has languished for want of committed exponents. There have been some notable recitals--Earl Wild's fine one on the Chesky label comes to mind--but a strong endorsement for the Medtner beyond his better known handful of works has been lacking.
This is a huge release, both in terms of the scale of the project and the pianist engaged. Marc-André Hamelin ...

That Ry Cooder, you've got to keep an eye on him every minute, or he jumps into another cross-cultural collaboration. In the wake of his landmark recordings TALKING TIMBUKTU with Ali Farka Toure and A MEETING BY THE RIVER with V.M. Bhatt comes BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, essentially a supergroup of traditional Cuban musicians with the addition of international agitator Cooder. Somehow, Cooder always finds just the right space to slide his sinuous slide guitar into, so that it works in almost any context. Here, amidst the multi-layered percussion, piano and Cuban guitar rhythms, Cooder's slide simultaneously finds a home and eggs the ensemble on. The natural beauty of the Cuban tonal and rhythmic palette is the real star of BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, evoking both a sense of mystery and a feeling of intense emotional satisfaction.
Additional personnel includes: Juan de Marcos Gonzalez (conductor, guiro, background vocals); Julio Alberto Fernandez (vocals, maracas); Manuel "Puntillita" Licea (vocals, congas); Omara Portuondo (vocals); Benito Suarez Magana (guitar); ...

Gospel Music CD music
$15.15 CELTIC WOMAN is the brainchild of David Downes, a composer/conductor who was heavily involved with the American production of RIVERDANCE. Not surprisingly, all of the lights, drama, and musical bombast of that esteemed show are present on this production as well. Instead of showcasing legions of dancers, however, CELTIC WOMAN puts the emphasis on the rich heritage of traditional and contemporary Irish music, as performed by five talented female performers from varying musical backgrounds.
Though the melodies are often extremely simple and unadorned, the production is just as lush and majestic as anything on Yanni's LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS, and should appeal to fans of that disc. ...
