Letter From Home
$15.65 Guitarist Pat Metheny has been working with long song forms since his career began in the 1970s. However, his 2005 release, THE WAY UP, takes the extended form to the next level. One composition split into four sections, this album just may be Metheny's most ambitious work to date.
Collaborating with longtime associates Lyle Mays (keyboards), Steve Rodby (bass), and a host of newer PMG members, Metheny embarks on a 68-minute sonic journey. Unlike a typical jazz suite, this music doesn't break down into movements; rather, the listener hears chapters, or parts, which segue seamlessly into one another. Moreover, the composition's main theme is woven, rather slyly, throughout much of the piece, which brilliantly combines ...

| | Pat Metheny Road To You: Recorded Live In Europe CD (1993) Remastered
Letter From Home
$13.69 "The Road To You" won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Contemporary Jazz Performance."
One the thing the Pat Metheny Group has always been known for is being able to pull off everything it can do on record in front of a live audience. THE ROAD TO YOU captures Metheny and his men on a European tour playing for ecstatic fans that even sing along to the guitarist's enchanting melodies. For their enthusiasm they are treated to explosive performances of many of Metheny's best works. Longtime members Lyle Mays, Steve Rodby, and Paul Wertico and multi-instrumentalists Armando Marsal and Pedro Aznar round out the group.
All of the group's "hits" are here, including the blistering "Have You Heard," which opens the show with a first-of-many jaw-dropping solos by the leader. The dramatic "First Circle" makes for an exciting live piece as Aznar's vocal work and May's delicate piano styling offer many pleasing moments. The crowd erupts at the first notes of the favorite "Last Train Home, " long a Metheny chestnut. The grandest moments, however, come with the exhilarating "Beat 70" and the stunning closer "Third Wind." Also included are some new compositions like the eclectic "Half Life Of Absolution" and Metheny's tender acoustic piece "Solo From 'More Travels'."

| | Pat Metheny We Live Here CD (1995) Remastered
Letter From Home
$13.69 Principally recorded at The Hit Factory, New York, New York in 1994.
WE LIVE HERE won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance.
The Pat Metheny Group have always been on the move. Previous album titles such as THE ROAD TO YOU, OFFRAMP and LETTER FROM HOME indicate a proclivity for motion, and on their latest production, WE LIVE HERE, they show that their home is a constant state of travel. Throughout these nine songs they challenge the listener to not go with them.
The Pat Metheny/Lyle Mays composition team works with hooky structures which provide foundations for thoughtful, and, at times, passionate improvisations. The rousing riff behind "Stranger In Town" serves as a jumping-off point for one of Pat's many stunning solos. With a full, warm sound, he masterfully develops his improvisations as if he were telling tales, weaving lines through carefully fabricated collages of harmonic color. Thematic and motivic development are standard in Metheny's playing, and he expresses his ideas with such conviction and craft that you may find yourself humming them later.
Another highlight of WE LIVE HERE is the propelling percussion of Luis Conte. From the hip-hoppish groove of "Here To Stay" to the fierce, tribal soundscape supporting the title track, Conte always adds the ...
| | Pat Metheny Quartet CD (1996) Remastered
Letter From Home
$13.69 The current Pat Metheny Group, which includes keyboard wizard Lyle Mays and the rhythm section of Steve Rodby and Paul Wertico, is a family of artists that has spent more than a decade developing and exploring its own musical terrain. On QUARTET, Metheny fans will find many familiar tonal colors and aural landscapes, but a new geography of ethnic influences brings a different, more stark background to the free improvisations, especially in the middle section of the disc. While much of this band's previous material has taken its inspiration from the horizontal, spacious phrasing and harmonies of Brazilian music, other sources appear here, as on "Badland," which has an Arabic tonality and a darkness that is new (and welcome) to the Metheny canon.
While many of the songs begin with a free improv section, they confound expectations of something mysterious by settling fairly quickly into "tunes." But whichever you prefer--compositions or improvisations--if ...
