The British jazz-fusion guitarist Ray Russell's tribute to his longstanding influence and collaborator, the legendary composer and arranger Gil Evans, contains both outtakes from the pair's sessions together and new compositions that feature Evans's son, Miles, on trumpet, and Russell's daughter, Amy Baldwin, on bass. Highlights include the witty collision of jazz-fusion and Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman" in "Prayer to the Sun," and the IN A SILENT WAY-influenced title track.
Personnel: Ray Russell (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Miles Evans (trumpet); Robin Aspland (Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond b-3 organ); Gary Husband (keyboards, drums); Gil Evans, Tony Hymas, Phil Peskett (keyboards); Amy Baldwin (double bass); Mo Foster (bass guitar); Simon Phillips, Ralph Salmins (drums); Anthony Jackson.
Uncut (p.119) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A]n exhilarating throwback to late-'60s jazz-rock fusion which ranges from Fripp-esque ambience to the unabashed rock of 'Prayer To The Sun'." The Wire (p.51) - "'Now Here's A Thing' shows Russell bluesier and funkier than elsewhere, with feedback in place of purity....SVENGALI makes a strong case for him." JazzTimes (p.128) - "Fleet-fingered opener 'Everywhere' couples Russell's wicked psych-jazz chops with glassy, FILLES DE KILIMANJARO-style accompaniment." | | Rasheed Ali & Rain People Agua Que VA A Caer CD (2005)
Goodbye Svengali
$6.39 On "Agua que va a Caer" (Water that is going to Fall), Rasheed Ali has crafted a seamless blend of traditional elements & modern textures to create a new take on Afro-Caribbean music.Inspired by a desire to celebrate the distinctly Afro-Puerto Rican musical form of Bomba, Ali has "channeled" the best elements of his childhood heroes; Rafael Cortijo, Ismael Rivera & Mon Rivera. For years, Afro-Puerto Rican culture has been an afterthought, often mistakenly included under the label of Afro-Cuban. Though the two islands are closely linked, Puerto Rican music does have a distinct story to tell. The music and culture of Puerto Rico is a mixture of several African ethnic groups, (Yoruba, Bantu, Fon, Fulani and Ashanti), Taino Amerindians, Arabs and Europeans. In their quest for cultural preservation, each group added an element ...
| | Baggott Scratching The Surface CD (2006)
Goodbye Svengali
$12.39 The tunes on this CD are a selection from literally hundreds which we know and have played for old-time dances and other events during the last fifteen years or so. Some of them are well-known traditional tunes, some are recent compositions, some are obscure pieces that we have gleaned from old printed sources and old recordings that have been re-released after having been forgotten for decades ... they run the gamut, so to speak.Fiddle and piano make a good combination of instruments. The fiddle carries the melody, while the steady bass line of the piano left hand and the chordal harmony of the right hand provide the perfect foundation so that the music comes off sounding solid, complete, and uncluttered. We have played for so many dances where people have come up to us afterwards and told us that we sound like there are four or five instruments playing, and they find it astonishing that we get so much ...
