| | Nina Simone Wild Is The Wind CD Nina Simone Discography of CDs
This album was apparently a bit of a pastiche of leftovers from sessions for Nina Simone's four previous albums on Philips. But you'd never guess from listening; the material is certainly as strong and consistent as it is on her other mid-'60s LPs. As is the case with most of her albums of the time, the selections are almost unnervingly diverse, ranging from jazz ballads to traditional folk tunes ("Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair") to the near calypso of "Why Keep on Breaking My Heart" to the somber, almost chilling title track. Highlights are two outstanding pop-soul numbers written by the pre-disco Van McCoy ("Either Way I Lose," "Break Down and Let It All Out") and "Four Women," a string of searing vignettes about the hardships of four African-American women that ranks as one of Simone's finest compositions. ~ Richie Unterberger
Personnel: Nina Simone (vocals, piano); Rudy Stevenson (guitar, flute); Lisle Atkinson (upright bass); Bobby Hamilton (drums); Horace Ott & His Orchestra.
No Depression (p.113) - "WILD IS THE WIND is simply transfixing, in part for a sequencing that alternates between orchestral flashed and the subtle groove of her regular combo..." Nina Simone Wild Is The Wind Songs Wild Is The Wind Review

$11.55 Comprised of the last five studio dates Holiday did for Verve, SONGS FOR DISTINGUE LOVERS finds Lady Day operating within her ideal environment; that of a small jazz combo. | | Wayne Shorter Alegria CD (2003)
Wild Is The Wind CD music
$15.59 ALEGRIA won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. "Sacajawea" won for Best Instrumental Composition.
ALEGRIA is a truly remarkable return to form for Wayne Shorter. Despite a number of missteps in the years since his acclaimed early-'60s releases JUJU and SPEAK NO EVIL, the revered tenor saxman and composer enjoyed a renaissance with 2002's well-received FOOTPRINTS LIVE and this collection of meticulously executed tunes. ALEGRIA recalls the Shorter of yore with its brainy, challenging arrangements and dexterous inside/outside musicianship. The opener "Sacajawea," for example, with its boogie rhythm and free-form solo explorations, gives ample evidence that Shorter and company mean business.
As one would expect, the musicians here ...
| | Duke Ellington Masterpieces By Ellington CD (1950) Bonus Tracks
Wild Is The Wind music CDs
$6.95 Recorded in 1950 at the dawn of the long-playing record era, three of these tracks--the vintage early-1930s compositions "Mood Indigo," "Sophisticated Lady," and "Solitude"--had only been previously been heard in their entirety in concert: before this release, record technology simply couldn't accommodate the full 10-minute-plus arrangements. The first four pieces, which made up the original album, were recorded just before an extensive lineup reshuffle in 1951, reflected in the personnel changes on the last three bonus tracks.
Amazingly, it took Columbia Records until the very end of 1950, two years into the LP era and the transition from disc to magnetic tape recording, to get Duke Ellington & His Orchestra into the studio to cut a long-playing record. For the first time in his recording career, Ellington was able to forego the three-minutes-and-change restrictions in running time of the 78-rpm disc -- he and the band rose to the occasion with extended (11-plus minute) "uncut concert arrangements" of "Mood Indigo," ...

| | Musiq Juslisen CDs (2002) Bonus Tracks; Special Edition
Wild Is The Wind songs
$16.69 JUSLISEN was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album.
"Halfcrazy" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Striking another blow for the fertile Philadelphia neo-soul movement is Musiq, whose sophomore bow JUSLISEN (JUST LISTEN) packs 70-plus minutes of songs overflowing with thick beats, juicy jams, and the Soulchild's sweet singing. Avoiding the trite practice of loading up on celebrity cameos, Musiq instead handles much of the heavy lifting himself with songwriting partner Carvin Haggins. Continuity is at the heart of JUSLISEN, as many of the songs are sequels to numbers appearing on his debut AIJUSWANASEING.
Slow jam "Time" takes an abstract approach towards romance, not unlike the previoius album's "Love." The Stevie Wonder-flavored "Newness" follows up on the pursuit of "Girl Next Door," and the hip-hop-laced "Caughtup" follows through on "Seventeen." Even Musiq's breakthrough smash "Just Friends (Sunny)" finds its thread wending through the midtempo thump of "Stoplayin." Best of all is "Religious," which starts out with the ambiance of a church revival ...
