This album was apparently a bit of a pastiche of leftovers from sessions for Nina Simone's four previous albums on Philips. But you'd never guess from listening; the material is certainly as strong and consistent as it is on her other mid-'60s LPs. As is the case with most of her albums of the time, the selections are almost unnervingly diverse, ranging from jazz ballads to traditional folk tunes ("Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair") to the near calypso of "Why Keep on Breaking My Heart" to the somber, almost chilling title track. Highlights are two outstanding pop-soul numbers written by the pre-disco Van McCoy ("Either Way I Lose," "Break Down and Let It All Out") and "Four Women," a string of searing vignettes about the hardships of four African-American women that ranks as one of Simone's finest compositions. ~ Richie Unterberger

ALEGRIA recalls the Shorter of yore with its brainy, challenging arrangements and dexterous inside/outside musicianship. Recorded in 1950 at the dawn of the long-playing record era, three of these tracks--the vintage early-1930s compositions "Mood Indigo," "Sophisticated Lady," and "Solitude"--had only been previously been heard in their entirety in concert: before this release, record technology simply couldn't accommodate the full 10-minute-plus arrangements. The first four pieces, which made up the original album, were recorded just before an extensive lineup reshuffle in 1951, reflected in the personnel changes on the last three bonus tracks.
Amazingly, it took Columbia Records until the very end of 1950, two years into the LP era and the transition from disc to magnetic tape recording, to get Duke Ellington & His Orchestra into the studio to cut a long-playing record. For the first time in his recording career, Ellington was able to forego the three-minutes-and-change restrictions in running time of the 78-rpm disc -- he and the band rose to the occasion with extended (11-plus minute) "uncut concert arrangements" of "Mood Indigo," ...

Striking another blow for the fertile Philadelphia neo-soul movement is Musiq, whose sophomore bow JUSLISEN (JUST LISTEN) packs 70-plus minutes of songs overflowing with thick beats, juicy jams, and the Soulchild's sweet singing. Avoiding the trite practice of loading up on celebrity cameos, Musiq instead handles much of the heavy lifting himself with songwriting partner Carvin Haggins. Continuity is at the heart of JUSLISEN, as many of the songs are sequels to numbers appearing on his debut AIJUSWANASEING.
Slow jam "Time" takes an abstract approach towards romance, not unlike the previoius album's "Love."
