| | Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD (1959) Bonus Track; Remastered
At Beethoven Hall 1 & 2 music CDs
$7.59 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about ...

| | Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour CD (2001)
At Beethoven Hall 1 & 2 CD music
$10.05 Digitally remastered by Up Light (Universal Mastering Studios East).
An accidental musical icon, Brazil's Astrud Gilberto became one of bossa nova's superstars in the mid-1960s, when she was unexpectedly drafted to sing English lyrics on her then-husband Joao Gilberto's famous '63 sessions with American saxophonist Stan Getz. One of the resulting songs, "The Girl from Ipanema," became a runaway international hit, and soon Astrud was recording her own albums. This 20-track Verve collection compiles many of Gilberto's best recordings from '63 to '69 (and, inexplicably, one tune from '86), showcasing her gentle, laid-back voice and the music's breezy backing arrangements.
In addition to the lilting aforementioned single, ASTRUD GILBERTO'S FINEST HOUR also presents the subdued "Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)," both from the GETZ/GILBERTO album, ...

| | Bob James Three CD (1976) Bonus Track; Remastered
At Beethoven Hall 1 & 2 album
$10.15 1976's THREE is easily one of Bob James' finest recordings. The Creed Taylor-produced album makes its statement with five classic pieces arranged and conducted by James. "Westchester Lady" ranks among the biggest successes of the keyboardist's long career.
The album opens with "One Mint Julep," an energetic fusion cut featuring a strong brass section of Grover Washington, Jr. and Jon Faddis, among others. The haunting melody of "Women of Ireland" marks a turn for slower tempos, with Eddie Daniels on flute and a fine guitar solo by Eric Gale. Daniels returns with a solo on the mellow "Jamaica Farewell." Harvey Mason, Will Lee, and Gary King provide notable support throughout. James' electronic-piano playing simulates vibes on "Storm King," a number almost sunk by its very '70s-styled ...
