LIVES finds the revered British singer/songwriter comfortably situated at the V2 label, recovered from his earlier injury, and in surprisingly energetic form. "Things Are Gonna Change (The Morning After)" and "After the Fall" kick off the disc ... Full Descriptionwith dense layers of electric guitars that recall various second-wave Britpop acts (Coldplay, Doves, et al.), with Davies's vocals and lyrics reflecting a broader scope than usual. Of course, Davies can't help but write classic Kinks-like narratives, as heard on songs like "Next Door Neighbour," a thoughtful acoustic tune straight off the village green, and "The Tourist," a dynamic tale of wanderlust that cheekily name-checks Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca." Closing out with the wistful, horn-laden "Thanksgiving Day" (which appeared on an earlier EP of the same name), OTHER PEOPLE'S LIVES both skillfully sidesteps and revels in the classic Kinks sound, and its many charms are revealed with repeated listens.
After considerable delay, Kinks frontman Ray Davies finally unveiled his solo studio debut, OTHER PEOPLE'S LIVES, in 2006. Seven years in the making, the album fell victim to record company woes as well as a much-publicized 2004 incident in New Orleans where Davies attempted to foil a purse snatching and was shot in the leg.
Personnel include: Ray Davies (vocals, guitar).
Rolling Stone (p.61) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[W]hen the rock kicks in, it is with reassuring familiarity: a chunky metallic heft hearkening back to the Kinks' arena-era winners MISFITS and LOW BUDGET." Entertainment Weekly (p.61) - "[The album] reveals that Ray Davies has lost little of his ability to marry great rock melodies to exquisitely off-beat lyrics..." -- Grade: A- Uncut (p.88) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Davies' work has always managed to chime with real life in a way that eludes most songwriters....Davies' tone has the ironic air of a cockney calypso, while the music anchors his musings in familiar surroundings..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.93) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Elusive, as ever....It's never less than fascinating and it's frequently sublime." Other People's Lives album
$11.89 WEST, from 2007, was one of Lucinda Williams' most personal and dark albums, a heartbroken meditation, mostly about the recent death of her mother. In years past, Williams likely would have retreated following such a major statement: in the first two decades of her career, spaces of nearly five years between albums weren't unheard of. Instead, the Louisiana-bred singer-songwriter knuckled down and recorded the exuberant LITTLE HONEY, perhaps her sunniest and most gleefully rocking album ever. Kicking off with the stomping, sexy single "Real Love," this is Williams in the rollicking "Passionate Kisses" side of her musical personality. Her lyrics are as sharp as ever, particularly on the wry ballad "If Wishes Were Horses" and the Elvis Costello duet, "Jailhouse Tears." Other guests include Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs, whose Buckingham-Nicks harmonies decorate several tunes, adding to the album's sunny and ...

Other People's Lives CD music
$19.54 BROTHERHOOD is a document of growth for New Order's ever-expanding sonic landscape. Packaged in the stark, utilitarian style that was the Factory label's trademark, the album belies its minimalist presentation with a sprawling, intricately crafted collection of pop gems, inspiringly diverse, yet uniformly infused with the band's trademark sincerity and off-kilter melodic sense. The album opens with the deceptively straight drum hits of "Paradise," which quickly adopts an intense double-tracked vocal and with it, an air of danger that offsets its soaring melody.

Recorded in 1976. Originally released as Atlantic (16033). Includes liner notes by David Wild.
Although it wasn't released stateside until '81, DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP is an Australian compilation recorded in the mid-70's. By the time of its U.S. release, singer Bon Scott had already died of alcohol poisoning and the band had emerged from the tragedy with new singer Brian Johnson and the stunning BACK IN BLACK. This album then, perhaps inadvertently, serves as an epitaph for the late, tattoo-emblazoned singer. And there is no more fitting eulogy than the title track, which captures Scott in all his raunchy glory.
Full of ill will, Scott snakes his way through a nasty tale of revenge. He's only too happy to provide TNT, concrete, cyanide, whatever it takes really, to get the job done. As he ...

Other People's Lives Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Ray's a genius, no question I think he made the album he wanted to make. It definitely gets more comfortable with repeated listening. All She Wrote is worth the price of the CD alone. Submitted by stujo4 (Wichita, Kansas USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Best CD I've bought in 4 years The 2nd half of this CD is contagious. I wake up singing the songs even though the last time I played it was on the drive home. I can't stop listening to it. Please take it away from me!! Note, from the Tourist to the end of the CD the music just crawls under your skin and attaches itself to your nervous system. Life after Breakfast is just too much fun to listen to. This CD may not be technically brilliant but it is why I Love music. For the feelings that the music provides. This one just kicks as..
