| | Stereo Total Discotheque CD Stereo Total Discography of CDs
The title, DISCOTHEQUE, and the stroboscopic cover art give a fair indication of the music on this 2006 Stereo Total release. This is electro party music, yet the ensemble's speedy, giddy techno owes as much to Kraftwerk (the true fathers of cerebral, robotic grooves) and the Velvet Underground as it does to contemporary club music.
What really distinguishes Stereo Total is their kooky wit, evidenced on the opening track "Everybody in the Discotheque (I Hate)," which condemns club life over an irresistibly bouncy dancefloor beat, and the jerky, Teutonic revision of the Rolling Stones' "Mother's Little Helper." Though not quite as booty-moving as Daft Punk (an outfit that dispenses comparably ironic, Euro-centric dance jams), Stereo Total mix an arty and minimal conceptual approach with a fun, high-energy take on electro-dance. Discotheque album
$19.10 NEVER A DULL MOMENT picks up where EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY left off. Here we have more raucous rock & roll with healthy dollops of soul and twang thrown in for good measure. Always looking for a good songwriter to cover, Stewart's honorees here include Jimi Hendrix ("Angel"), Dylan ("Mama You Been On My Mind"), and Rod's personal hero, Sam Cooke ("Twistin' The Night Away"). Sidling up nicely next to these heartfelt interpretations are some of Stewart's finest original songs. Teaming with spiritual brother Ron Wood, Stewart offers up the cheeky "Italian Girls" and "True Blue," a track that goes along at a mid-tempo clip before exploding into a heartfelt rave-up.
Most notable is a collaboration with Martin Quittenton on "You Wear It Well," an irresistible ...
| | Sting If On A Winter's Night... CDs (2009) Digipak
Discotheque CD music
$14.19 It's no secret that Sting is a serious man, so it's only logical that his holiday album -- his first new music since the Police reunion, not that it really matters -- is a serious endeavor, thank you. No niceties for him, no comforts of carols; he favors formal over familiar, writing madrigals, not ditties. It is music made by someone who lives in a castle, ...
| | Tom Waits Glitter And Doom Live CDs (2009) Digipak
Discotheque music CDs
$13.84 Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. There are stellar performances here, such as "Get Behind the Mule" from The Mule Variations, "Trampled Rose" from Real Gone, and a haunting version of Leadbelly's "Fannin Street" from Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, to mention just three of the 17 cuts here. But he goes back to his Island albums too. For instance, there are completely re-visioned readings of "Lucky Day" and "I'll Shoot the Moon" from 1993's Black Rider, and a killer -- though equally revamped -- version ...

| | Daughtry Leave This Town CD (2009)
Discotheque album
$15.45 When he was recording his debut album in 2006, Chris Daughtry didn't have the time to assemble the real rock band he so desperately wanted to have, so it appeared under the band name Daughtry without featuring any of the musicians who later became part of the group. That's not the case with LEAVE THIS TOWN, Daughtry's second record: all five members are glowering on the album cover, floating like specters over an abandoned Californian street. The five rockers serve as visual evidence that Daughtry is a band, not a person, and such reminders may be necessary because LEAVE THIS TOWN doesn't differ much in feel or form from DAUGHTRY. Overall, LEAVE THIS TOWN isn't quite as studio slick as DAUGHTRY, which was fueled by Chris Daughtry's desire prove that he belonged in the big leagues; here, he's achieved that goal and he's happy to stay there as long as possible, giving the people what they want in the form of furrow-browed rockers and brooding power ballads, all saved from their self-conscious sobriety by arena-level hooks, hooks that come from Daughtry and a variety of co-writers including Ben Moody and Nickelback's Chad Kroeger. Daughtry brings these big hooks down to human ...

| | Masters Of The Steel String Guitar CD (2000)
Discotheque music CDs
$14.49 This 18-song CD is taken from the 1999-2000 season of an American national tour of steel guitar players, spotlighting Wayne Henderson, John Cephas and Phil Wiggins, Eddie Pennington, Johnny Bellar, Linda Lay, and David Lay. Some of those performers don't play steel guitar here, but act as accompanists to the steel guitarists: Wiggins is a harmonica player and singer, Linda Lay a bassist and singer, and David Lay a rhythm guitarist and singer. Probably only Cephas & Wiggins will be familiar to the general popular-music audience. ...

Discotheque music CDs
$10.49 The first album to feature new lead vocalist Bruce Guthro, this 2002 outing from the Scottish celtic popsters is loaded with anthems, ambiance, and attitude. Several of the tunes are sung in Gaelic, but that doesn't diminish their immediacy in the least.
After a three-year layoff that triggered speculation about the existence and future of this popular Scottish band, they answered in resounding fashion with In Search of Angels. This album introduces new lead singer Bruce Guthro from Canada. He fills in more than adequately for the longtime singer Donnie Munro who departed after Mara to pursue other interests. Since Guthro sounds quite a bit like Munro and the songwriting tandem of percussionist Calum MacDonald and bassist Rory MacDonald remains in tact, Munro's absence ...

Discotheque songs
$17.45 The songs on Art Brut's debut, BANG BANG ROCK & ROLL, sound like they were tossed off in ten minutes; of course, the band is the first to admit that fact, even reveling in it, and therein lies the record's appeal. Naïve, bratty, insouciant, and wild, Art Brut celebrate both the glory of rocking out and the disposable nature of the genre with tongues planted firmly in cheeks. The album's lead-off single, "Formed a Band," is a case in point, inviting listeners, with an air of faux amazement, to "look at us/ we formed a band," and the sludgy, riffalicious anthem "Modern Art" may be the lowest highbrow song ever written. In all, Art Brut manage to balance postmodern irony with something altogether genuine: the sheer ...
| | Howard Devoto Jerky Versions Of The Dream CD (1983) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Discotheque album
$9.69 Erstwhile Buzzcock and former front man of post-punk outfits Magazine and Luxuria, Howard Devoto has always been somewhat difficult to peg musically. After disbanding Magazine in the early '80s, Devoto went on to pursue a short-lived solo career, resulting in his lone 1983 effort, JERKY VERSIONS OF THE DREAM. More pop-based than any of his previous efforts, the songs all feature Devoto's distinctive croon--a discomfiting mix of seduction and caustic menace. Like his material with Magazine, Devoto's lyrics are peppered with poetic allusions to politics, both personal and social. The slow building heat of "Cold Imagination" comes across like a post-punk quiet storm. Trapped in the deep freeze of his own mind, his anguished voice intones, "Get me out of my cold imagination." ...
