Bestbreeder From 1997 To 2000
$15.55 Brendon Small and Gene Hoglan proved their animated death metal band Dethklok had the chops to rock out like a living, breathing group on THE DETHALBUM. On DETHALBUM II, Small and Hoglan make Dethklok sound more like a real band than ever before--for better and worse. Without a doubt, these songs rock hard. The production is tighter and the attack is even heavier than it was on the first album, but surprisingly, that ends up being a slight weakness rather than a strength. What made THE DETHALBUM special was that the songs were funny, but not jokey; tried and true metal fans could appreciate the humor that was mixed into the heaviness, while the wit drew in metal neophytes. But on DETHALBUM II, Small and Hoglan have gotten so good at lovingly embodying metal clichés that the songs aren't as overtly funny or catchy as they were on the first album. Some tracks are almost indistinguishable from music by a genuine death metal band (to casual listeners, anyway). With DETHALBUM II, it feels like Small and Hoglan are courting metal fans first--and with several successful tours under Dethklok's animated ...
| | Dream Theater Black Clouds & Silver Linings CDs (2009) Special Edition
Bestbreeder From 1997 To 2000
$21.19 Special Edition CD includes the full album, a CD of instrumental mixes of the album and a CD of six cover songs.
Dream Theater's tenth long-player is about as dense and challenging as any album in the band's discography and emphasizes not only the virtuoso members' stupefying musicianship, but also their most aggressive and thoroughly metallic songwriting tendencies. The sixteen-minute opener "A Nightmare to Remember" quickly establishes this agenda via frequently thrash-paced staccato riffing, some of John Petrucci's most blistering guitar solos ever, and the return of drummer Mike Portnoy's syncopated growls, which provide contrast for singer James LaBrie's soaring melodic elegance. "The Count of Tuscany" is a heady prog-metal magnum opus brimming with more ideas, notes, and time changes over 19 minutes than most bands bother with over a ten album career. In fact, "Whither," a ...

| | Jerry Cantrell Degradation Trip Volumes 1 & 2 CDs (2002) Limited Edition
Bestbreeder From 1997 To 2000
$20.69 This Limited edition of DEGRADATION TRIP features bonus material from the
The impact Jerry Cantrell made with his former band Alice In Chains set the blueprint for hard rock in the 1990s like few others. Widely imitated yet never successfully replicated, Cantrell remains a seemingly boundless fountain of crunchy, groove-heavy riffs and eerie vocal harmonies. After a compromise with his label (Roadrunner Records) to release a one-disc version, Cantrell's musical vision can finally be appreciated with the breadth and sequencing he originally intended with DEGRADATION TRIP VOLUMES 1 & 2.
The eleven additional cuts are far from scraps recovered from the cutting room floor. "Pro False Idol" and "Dying Inside" are musical studies of an artist struggling with the sticky marriage of art and commerce, while the sole ...

| | Mastodon Crack The Skye CD (2009)
Bestbreeder From 1997 To 2000
$12.19 Atlanta's Mastodon climbed to the top of the metal heap the old-fashioned way. Taking the template for success etched by Metallica, the band captured the imagination with a series of albums that offered potent heaviness and relentless experimentation. After graduating from respected indie Relapse, they released 2006's acclaimed BLOOD MOUNTAIN, an album with a fire motif/fantasy adventure concept that opened numerous doors both commercially and critically. Their latest, CRACK THE SKYE, completes their elemental cycle by focusing on "ether," while also serving as a tale of czarist Russia. The progressive metal elements that bled into their sound on BLOOD MOUNTAIN are pushed even further here, led once more by Brann Dailor's furiously technical drumming. As Dailor goes, so goes the band, and his stick work remains some of the finest this side of Neil Peart. The crackling "Divinations" follows up the contemplative, restrained ...
| | Baby AKA The 1 Stunna Birdman CD (2002)
Bestbreeder From 1997 To 2000
$12.65 While Brian "Baby" Williams, co-founder of Dirty South pioneers Cash Money Records, obviously has the confidence to make a grab for the mic, he has no illusions about his abilities. By his own admission more a talker than a rapper, Baby has smartly selected the crucial talents of such R&B luminaries as Toni Braxton, Jermaine Dupri, Mannie Fresh, and Cam'ron to assist him on his debut BIRDMAN. The combination of these stars and production skills from Timbaland and the Neptunes is more than enough to pick up any slack, of which there's surprisingly little.
Braxton's contribution, the plangent "Baby You Can Do It," is typical in its smooth blend of breathy R&B with Williams's nasal rappadocio, while the breezy singalong chorus to the obligatory gangsta nod "Hustlas, Pimps and Thugs" ("I just need a hug") is played strictly for laughs. With BIRDMAN, an accomplished ...

| | Jonathan Mcleran Romance Of Plants CD (2008)
Bestbreeder From 1997 To 2000
$10.15 At our best we sometimes find ourselves and our opposite joined, at eternal odds, in stalemated singularity. Our most solid completeness and best art often comes from this constant and synchronous pulling in all directions from our inner most core. This sort of inspirational dichotomy is apparent in the local Popaholic Recording Artist, and one-man band known as Jonathan McLeran. His first solo release, \"The Romance of Plants\" is an instant infection of the 60\'s psych-pop harmony of \"Pet Sounds\" era Beach Boys and The Byrds juxtaposed against the modern indie-pop melody and hip fluidic sensibility of Pavement. The \"Romance of Plants\" at its surface is immediately catchy and hook driven with the pop mastery and tongue and cheek lighthearted lyric wit of Beck, Sebadoh, and Of Montreal. McLeran\'s whimsical wordplay keeps your attention without distracting ...
